    |ABOUT THIS VIDEO|
Polyhouse is a structure that allows regulation of climatic conditions. It is a kind of greenhouse, made from rigid transparent plastic. The simple fact that you can regulate moisture, temperature and even pest infestation in a polyhouse, makes them a great choice.
In recent years, Indian government has been spending hundreds of crores on the building and development of polyhouses. What is the reason behind it? Will the government policies help and teach all farmers to adapt and make the most of the new technologies? Is this the future of Indian agriculture?
In this episode of Beyond Garden, we try to answer some of these questions and explore the underlying factors that determine the changing landscape of agriculture in India.

8:24 The best possible support for small farmers is water management. Rain collection, storage and irrigation should always be the cornerstone for farming. Until India moves to sustainable water investments, we won't be able to push our agriculture any further

To be clear - AP and Telangana have zero money to give any subsidies for polyhouses, drip/sprinkler irrigation. Coffers are empty. It costs about 40 Lakhs to set up a polyhouse in one acre and drip irrigation will cost an additional 3-4 lakhs (depends on inline drip, spacing, et al). Nutrients, micro nutrients and nano fertilizers will increase the price further. The poly house will certainly reduce the time to yield and potentially increase the yield. The numbers you have given for Tomatoes is not India specific (I have seen it in Spain and in the US and the numbers are close). One must select higher value crops that will give a better price through out the year. For perspective, 80% of greenhouses and polyhouses in the US shut down after two years due to the high cost of maintenance. A customer will not pay more just because I grow it inside a polyhouse. Finding farm labor at affordable rates (that makes it commercially viable) is a bigger challenge. The minimum age (not the average) of a farmer across most of India is 40 years !! Will be glad to provide more insights to anyone that is looking to set it up.

I feel polyhouses work only with proper soil, water and ecological management. These require a lot of research before setting up. So we'll have to see.
However, I've seen mixed sort of farming in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Certain areas dedicated to polyhouses for exotics, and the rest of land on crop rotation. And i know some of the families who have been doing it close to a decade now. They had done their due diligence though, and had even set up rain water collection and drip irrigation systems for their farm lands...
And this year, i had attended the Krishi Mela in Bengaluru where there were set ups to educate farmers on polyhouses and other farming methods. Focus was heavily on sustainability

Thankyou your video was super cool. but you should have also added a interview of real polyhouse farmer their challanges with polyhouse. Their experience , real ground report. Here in video what I can see was just normal theoretical study on polyhouse. Please also try to add some ground reports and real experience of people who are dealing with that stuff. I hope my comment will give you some valuable review.

Great work Ekta, well researched and presented..Since last 20-25 years Bangalore and surrounding satellite areas' weather has changed drastically, lakes were covered to build apartments and to accomodate the software industry, orchards converted to layouts, ragi fields converted to poly houses...plastic from ecommerce, road side eaters, food orders, marriage halls... we are fighting everyday to educate about such things...

Internationally, polyhouses are called polytunnels or high tunnels.
Mostly pre-watch comment: In the Indian context (as well as in its neighbouring countries), the very usage, spreading from south to north instead of north to south, seems reversed from where they'd most benefit.

By the development of sustainable life challenges we've destroyed natural seasons , so for overcame those problems we have created shelter for crops which is called poly house, so we can create seasons which crops requires but govt . Should give 70% subsidies to formers otherwise it's going to be so hard to small formers to investment on this ..1 acres poly house cost is 40lakh..

Nature has a rule...a different type of food(vegetables/fruits etc) for different seasons...so that it helps our body under different climatic conditions...like we eat mango in summers etc..polyhouses are breaking this rule...well as usual we call it Development.... because destruction is a new development.

VERY WELL JUSTIFIED.... rather than CONSTRUCTING NON-IDEOLOGICAL STRUCTURES like STATUES, RELIGIOUS COBSTRUCTIONS, OTHER ORGANIZATIONZ which are of NO use ... this can be a POSITIVE kind of thing for the Farmers if they are given right way of teaching... see India does not have 100 percent agricultural land for cultivation or for flowers or what ever other reason maybe.. from 2023, Hydroponics too increasing.. so why not increasing these so that we can grow any variety... ❤😊 this initiative is truly a blessing n remarkable one bcz its ORGANIC ...

Really government construct temples ! name any? instead government controls temples, collects money from temples only, not from mosques or churches. And uses that money for its expenditure. So not only temple helps in developing country but also the economy of that particular region as it attracts people from whole country and provides local people job and investment opportunities. Just look how UP has emerged as a new religious hotspot just by investing on roads , railways and waterways. I dont know how people like you always blames particular religious group for anything its an curse for our country to have people like you.

Temples, i mean all RELIGIOUS constructions in my way... vaise bhi ek hee Religion follow karne ka koi rule nahin hein India mein... Secularism ka mathlab hein sabh saath mein rehna.... dont get offended am talking only about temples specifically.. being a Hindu myself, i do talk about illicit things which Govt does all this time from past years... no one sees that, if so no one cares n questions... simple... if i point out specifically, i can tell you India is not Only Hindu country, we do have so many cultures n other Religions too so respect them.... but few people, they will tell Only Hinduism should be followed and nothing else... why people always Attach Religion or Caste into these type of things.. am talking about farmers welfare or people who want to have a better career from these type of things.. If i Speak Truth, Have you SEEN GUJARAT now.... its like a "mini Abroad" City or whatever it is called.... wake up guys... please dn bring religion in these things.. someone wants to do something for orher people, lets appreciate it...

While polyhouses helps to control temperature, humidity etc but I would think there is a permaculture solution to it. Permaculture is 3 principles- earth care, people care and fair share.
    (1) Polyhouse = plastic = more waste issue and degradation of natural resources. So earth care and people care is not met unless we have a solution to plastic pollution.
    (2) Permaculture adopts natural predator cycles for pest control issues.
    (3) Permaculture handles water usage, recycling, harvesting and storing by natural methods mimicking nature.
    (4) Because permaculture mimics nature; it supports more variety of food that helps in more than one way - soil health, pest control, water management and simply adding more nutrition on the platter.
    (5) I read in some paper published that we are depleting Phosphorus. While composting slows the depletion but shouldn’t we prioritize strategies to address the issue. I do not know if flowers are heavy feeders on phosphorus but I do know they need the element. Flower trade while generates more profit should be limited. Another reason is flower waste that is a growing issue that is polluting water and land. While agree flowers are biodegradable but without handling flower waste properly it would be difficult to recycle nutrients into the soil. Some have managed to use flower waste; esp one from religious place to be used as natural dye for cloth. While on the surface it looks like a solution but it is not because first it has not scaled to reduce chemical dyes, second it uses natural resources like fresh water that we are rapidly using and third the cloth/clothing industry waste is phenomenal- our landfills are testimony to it and is overflowing stores. A documentary stated we have worth next 6 generations clothing today when we know our future generations are already loosing access to clean air, water and land. What kind of security is this?

This is false promise of poly house for most of indian farmers. What this study overlooked is the failure of agriculture polyhouse and many examples of polyhouse that made farmers bankrupt.
We all know that majority of farmers are very poor and very very small land owners. Even after government discount farmers still needs 9 lakhs per acre.
This is where everything goes wrong with polyhouse in india.
I would say here government is making the same mistake that they did few decades ago with white revolution and green revolution. Any dumb can tell what has happened after that to indian indgenous cattle breed and health hazards to farmers (specially e.g of that is cancer train in punjab).
Some headless chickens in government lack long term vision for better tomorrow. They rush for short term goal and then miserably fail. With polyhouse plan they will 200% fail.
