One of the most underrated bands, speaking as someone from the US. The language barrier is really the thing, but great music is great music. Yoshiki, the drummer is one of the best I've ever heard. He also plays piano and still performs. Hide is probably the best guitarist that few here have heard of. Gone way too soon. But, that whole band is just so damn talented.

It has been almost 20 years since I first listened to X-Japan and I'm still amazed by the contrast of how delicate Yoshiki is on the piano and what a beast he is when he's on drums.
    Please keep X-Japan coming! 🔥

When Hide softly smiled to Toshi at the intro I cried my eyes out. The last live is the best version of Kurenai but it's really hard for me to watch it without feeling heartbroken.😥

I’ve been waiting for your reaction to this, thank you!! Yoshiki wears a neck brace because of the amount of headbanging he used to do, he finally did neck surgery I think sometime in 2017? Their live performances are always soooo good

  • @watcher2554
    @watcher2554 3 роки тому +32

"Why is my dude wearing a neckbrace, by the way?"
Medical Necessity. When Yoshiki was a little younger, he would headbang so hard while drumming that he severely injured his neck and was ordered to wear it by his doctors.
The neck brace you see in the Babymetal Music Video :Headbanger:, and in the stage productions of Ave Maria and Baymetal Death and throughout their shows for the first half a decade, were in tribute to him! They use to give out neck braces at the door to certain special concert events.
    We are X!
    Put your Kitsune UP!! Po!

I think they actually told him to stop drumming altogether and this was his compromise lol. I might be wrong though.

      THIS!!!!
Yes, he injured his neck while headbanging, thus the braces during many life concerts. He has been diagnosed with cervical foraminal stenosis twice and upon the second diagnosis in 2017, he underwent an emergency cervical artificial disc replacement surgery which was successful.
Yoshiki is an amazing musician. He grew up learning classical piano before getting into drums, leading him to become a brilliant composer of both classical and rock genres. I recommend checking out "Disney - My Music Story: Yoshiki" on Disney+. It's a documentary about his life where he talks about his music, influences, etc., and how X Japan became pivotal in Visual Kei/J-Rock music. He even talked about how and why he became so fast on the drums (200 bpm!). Thank you for the great reaction!

I personally think that X JAPAN and LOUDNESS are Japanese rock legends(My mother is a fan of X JAPAN and my father is a fan of LOUDNESS)
X JAPAN may be the most successful band, but as everything has light and shadow, what happened to them was quite tragic. I can't watch their last "紅Kurenai" video without tears. Thank you for reacting to it.

X-Japan: often described as the best band you've never heard of. The drummer also is a very good pianist. Someone else mentioned Nemophila's cover of this--check it out.

As Gene Simmons said, "if X Japan would've been from the US or UK, they would've been the biggest band in the world".
Drummer Yoshiki is one of the most influential Japanese musicians there is. Everyone who's interested in music in Japan knows Yoshiki. Besides from being their drummer, he also wrote and composed almost all their songs. He's also a world class pianist (as you saw on Endless Rain, I think that's the song you did before). A few years ago he was invited to play on the Japanese emperor's birthday. He also composed a theme song for a Grammy award ceremony, etc etc. He wears/wore the neckbrace since the early/mid 90s because he damaged his neck with his antics on stage, more specifically his headbanging. It also wasn't rare that he collapsed on stage because he has pretty severe asthma but didn't give a shit. He rather destroyed his drum set during songs/solos because he was frustrated with it than shift down a gear. They always had oxygen masks ready for him backstage if he needed them during a longer concert.
One last thing because you mentioned the transparent drum set... he said in the X Japan documentary (We Are X) that he absolutely hated it because he needed to hit it twice as hard as a normal one to get the same sound and it exhausted him even more.

    • @josh_who_what
      @josh_who_what 2 роки тому +1

Yikes, I need to watch the documentary but mind explaining why they chose transparent drums??

    • @ANDOR-
      @ANDOR- 2 роки тому +2

@@josh_who_what I don't really remember if they talked about it on We Are X, but as far as I know it was solely for aesthetics. It became kind of an iconic drum set because of Yoshiki, so you have to tip your hat to them if that was why they pushed it on him.

    • @josh_who_what

@@ANDOR- The aesthetics part I can tell, thanks for the explanation tho!

My alltime favorite of theirs. I was lucky to get exposed to them in the mid 90s here in europe and was very touched by what happened after the last live!
One of the bests out there and as mentioned before, watch the „We are X“ documentary to get a slide overview of what they achieved!
Have seen them at their last concert in London and I still think back to with fond memories…almost 3 hours with some talks in between! Sadly the long awaited new album is still not it stores!

Yoshiki (the drummer and the pianist) plays drums so hard he breaks his body, so he wears the brace to keep from breaking his neck. You don't remember the drummer int he last one, because in that one he was on the piano :)

One of the greatest japanese bands!
to add to your thoughts at the end of the video... yeah, it sucks. There are so many bands we simply don't know about, but should :/
USA is the biggest music market. So of course everyone would try to "get in". But US market is VERY hard for "foreign" artists to get into. "You don't speak american" basically ^^"... Of course there are a couple exceptions - "Rammstein", "ABBA" (:P), ..., latin american music and K-Pop boom in recent years for example.
Japan is the second biggest music market - and they are a small country with far less population. Also US artists tends to be known world wide more or less, - not the case for japanese. Still, their domestic market is HUGE. Most of them seem to have no desire to expand from the domestic-only. Some (many, but not the majority) of the bands still try for US-share... "Loudness" (~ "the better Motley Crue" of Japan) tried in the 80s... "Babymetal" is one who pretty much succeeded - so hey, I hope, it changes for the better!
"X-Japan" started as "X" btw. They were under Sony as their label and were very successful. They tried for the US-market, they wanted that international success! They attempted an album release in US - but in order to do that they had to change their name, as there was already an US band registered as "X". So they renamed to "X-Japan". The US album was never released though....
They deserved to become huge internationally :)
    PS
the neck brace is for headbanging waay too hard... Babymetal incorporated the "neck brace" in their early days as a homage btw - see "Headbanger" MV and "Death" live for example ;)

X Japan was around a long time, they and Loudness are kind of the godfathers of Japanese metal I think. The drummer for X Japan is crazy as I recall and they had troubles with the lead singer leaving for a long time and then finally coming back if I remember correctly.

    Singer=Toshi
Drummer=Yoshiki - you have to know him, if anyone is anyone, they know Yoshiki, he knows even the Queen xD of England, that is. He knows BTS too :P
I'll let the strings for later. Hide you know :_(
I wish you would just dive into their discography (on your own time and maybe react to live versions?) and jump through Luna Sea and reach Dir en Grey :_) How do you call when you "sing" (like really sing) the instrumentals of the songs, because I know every single note of all of these songs and get so pumped XD
Anyway, glad to see you reacting to XJapan again! (Oh, Sexmachine Guns is another great band)

Gene Simmons (Kiss) said that if X Japan had been a Western band, they would been one of the biggest Bands in the world!
X Japan was scheduled to be the first Japanese band to perform in Wembley Arena (UK) but they fell apart. So who was?!?! Babymetal and Yoshiki (drummer, founder, song writer) was there to see and congratulate them.
As to Hide's death, officially a suicide but I have read that the band members believe it was an accident. Apparently there is method guitarist use to relieve their shoulder pain from "wearing" the guitar by hanging, using a towel. They said he was likely drunk and passed out.
Tamu (Nemophila) auditioned for Yoshiki's Lady X Japan project, she played the drum part from Kurenai! There video is still around.

There are a huge amount of video's on UA-cam of X Japan and hide (pronounced heeday). I found X Japan about 3 years ago and can't believe I'd not heard of them before. They should have been the biggest rock/metal band in the world. I have since managed to get the album 'We Are X' and two hide albums 'Hide Your Face' and Psyence (from Japan). I'm totally hooked. And now we have The Last Rockstars created by Yoshiki and you need to check out the lead singer Hyde. Lead singer of L'arc En Ciel and also a solo career his voice is absolutely amazing. Check out The Last Rockstars concert in LA on youtube, absolutely amazing!!!

    Well
    I love this song
    This happens to be
    THE BEST UNKNOWN BAND EVER
    They did separate on 1997
Last concert just a few days after the birth of our QUEEN
    SUSUKA NAKAMOTO
    The reason I mentioned
    Was
X JAPAN have such an influence on
    BABYMETAL
    from
    THE NECKBRASE
    THE PIANO
THE X SINNG THE GIRLS DO
    TO SOME OF THE SONGS
    AS
ENDLESS RAIN WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR
    NO RAIN NO RAINBOW 🌈
    AND THE FAMOUS MOMENTS
    WERE SU HITS THE GONG
    well
    Just to make sure
The reason you do not remember the DROMER in your last reaction
    Is very simple
YOSHIKI is a very accomplished musician
So the guy in the piano was him
    Usually in the heavier songs
They start with him in the piano
And then he goes to the drums
    And here is the deal
THEY DID GOT BACK TOGETHER IN 2007 and they still together till this day is just that because of the pandemic I think they stopped performing
    But
Most amazing tribute was performed during the new concerts after HIDES DETH
IN EVERY CONCERT HIS GUITAR IS SHOWCASE AS A TRIBUTE TO HIM
AND HIS OPENING PARTS IN THE SONGS WERE REPLACE BY PIANO INTRO AND SOME BY PIANO AND VIOLIN INTRO
    ALSO THEY HAVE A HOLOGRAM
    AS THEY PERFORM
BEST ONE YOU HAVE NOT DONE JET
RUSTY NAIL LIVE WITH VIOLIN INTRO
THIS SONG WAS FROM 2007 it is insane
It is their concert opening song
    Just saying

To be honest, I thought the same, but we were handed it at some point and some followed the thread, some didn't. That's all.
For me, it was anime, have you watched Dragon Ball? Kenshin? Bleach?
Take DBZ opening: ua-cam.com/video/hcdDnwm4pAE/v-deo.html ;) In Spain the song was song by one of the most relevant rock/metal bands of the moment (late 80s early 90s).
Or take Rurouni Kenshin: ua-cam.com/video/gZGmDKxEp-I/v-deo.html (Judy&Mary opening)
    Bleach: ua-cam.com/video/dfh4JuzYNpM/v-deo.html
I dived in, who took me first was L'arc en ciel (they just had a tour for their 30th Anniversary, they look no older than 20 xD) --> the 4th ending of Kenshin: ua-cam.com/video/_NzwGk8ZoP8/v-deo.html (they sang also in DNA2 and Final Fantasy the movie in 98?)
Anyway, it's never too late ;) I'm glad you are getting to know them now!

Thank you for this reaction. I've made a text from what ive done research about the band and the members im gonna paste it here, hopefully it will give some insight of the band.
There is a band called X Japan, which is quite literally, the most famous band out from Japan, They are the godfathers of genre called Visual Kei (Japanese metal songs with crazy aesthetics, makeup etc) they formed somewhere around mid 80's and are still going, but they were absent for 10 years from 1997 to 2008, they disbanded in 1997 because their vocalist Toshi got brainwashed by a cult and forced to leave the band. They held (at the time) their last live concert named The Last Live, few months after their disbandment their lead guitarist Hideto "hide" Matsumoto died due to an accident while drunk (it was first stated that he killed himself, but the band members were very against it, cause of how positive hide was as a person) his passing broke the whole country of Japan into grief, his grave is still visited today and there is a guitar museum in his memory in Japan. His funeral caused mass traffic of grieving fans in Tokyo, numbers around 50 000. Some even took their own life while grief-stricken. Their former bassist killed himself in 2011, he was kicked from the band from unknown reasons in 1992. X Japan influenced the music industry in Japan as much as their conservative society, which lead to Rock music taking uprising in Japan and there is a way in Japan where they use names as Pre- and Post X Japan, on how much they influenced everything.
The songs are mostly composed and written by their drummer/pianist Yoshiki Hayashi, who based a lot of the bands song from his tragic past. He was born in a frail and weak body, he wasnt meant to survive past his 20's yet he is still making music, he has been a classical pianist from the age of 4, he took up drumming at the age of 10, when he lost his father to a suicide. He started playing drums with such aggression that he was hospitalized and sometimes collapsed on stage due to immense pain and lack of air. Yoshiki has composed an anniversary song for the Emperor of Japan which he performed at the 10th anniversary of the Emperor. He also composed the theme song for the Golden Globe awards and has been taking over the music industry in rock music as in classical piano aswell. He also had a comic made by Stan Lee himself, named Blood Red Dragon, and his own Hello Kitty character named Yoshikitty, he was also a big part in many documents such as We Are X! and Yoshiki: My Story.
Their past guitarist hide also had a solo career which was very succesful until his death in 1998, he had many documentaries about him after his death, but sadly many of them arent in english, nor subtitled. He was the founder of Headwax and Lemoned organisations and produced many smaller bands to bigger audiences. He is been compared to Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain, in ways he affected the music industry in Japan.
