- I joined my friend Yara and a group of her friends for an off-road weekend in the White Desert which is about 500kms away from Cairo. We arrived there late at night, set up tents whilst half asleep, but in the morning I realised how incredible this place was!
The White Desert is very unique, it's colours and composition aren’t found anywhere else. These white stones look like ice. It's hard to imagine it's still on planet Earth.
Some guys brought light enduro bikes on a trailer, some just drove their 4x4 cars. For the three days, we just explored the desert and played on the sand dunes.

What an amazing place to play with off road vehicles. It looks like an alien planet out of Star Wars!
I was in Egypt two years to Assyut in 1986 - 1988 and I had contract to Cement Fabricks. I were all country from Saint Katren to Abu Simbel and from border to Libia to Red See, Alexandria and Port Said, Nile Delta, Luxor, Aswan, Elefantina island etc. This place with white sand and hills from calcar it's special. I want the name of the place. Very beautiful film with this group of kind egyptiens. Congratulation for Yara.
The white desert looks pretty amazing. It could be a different world or planet. A different skill required for riding on sand and a lite weight bike. With you walking on the peak of the sand dune is like watching a movie scene. Unbelievable amount of sand-incredible. Is it true that it get's very cold in the desert at night - like 0 degrees?

That looked like tons of fun. I used to love to ride the dunes when I was a kid. As far as that go's everyone from 6 to 60 loved to just play in the sand.

I remember jumping down some massive sand dunes near Aswan in 1972. Great fun ... except I didn't know for a day or two, that a 2.5cm long thorn imbedded into my foot. It went straight into my foot & was so sharp, that I didn't feel it for 2 days, until it began to fester. Took me about 1 week to exticate the thorn & it was still very sharp.

main geographic attraction of Farafra is its White Desert (known as Sahara el Beyda, with the word sahara meaning a desert) - a national park of Egypt and 45 km (28 mi) north of the town of Farafra, the main draw of which is its rock type colored from snow-white to cream. It has massive chalk rock formations that are textbook examples of ventifact . old sea bottom skeletons.
