It is a personal Story of the Band. The band members (and I too) were born and grew up in East Germany (GDR). Until the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was very difficult to listen to Western music. The song was released in 2019, as the 2nd single from the 7th untitled album 2019. Can you react to:

05:54 your video is not from the original Rammstein channel, the video has 8,24 million views. Sorry I was wrong, it's actually 101 million views and 1.5 million likes, I confused it with the subscribers.

Radio was the ear to the world. More difficult to censor than the Internet today, with shortwave radio.

Eh, that's a bit of a stretch tbh. In basically ALL parts of the world every relevant radio station could be controlled and censored with ease. They all need a ton of electrical power to function and they are all stationary and easy to detect. That's not even counting the need for the licenses you need to operate a radio station.
Of course not all countries DID censor radio, but all dictatorships did, and even some western ones had laws or sometimes self-censored certain content/songs.
The internet as a whole is not easy to censor because of it's decentralized nature. And many attempts of censorship can be circumvented with ease.

@@arnodobler1096 i mean yeah, but unlike rogue radiostations, rogue websites have infinite reach. A rogue station can MAYBE cover a small to medium city, but a rogue website covers the whole world.
Every person with an internet connection could host a website from home. Or rent a server in south america for 2 bucks a month. Hosting a rogue radio station requires niche knowledge and equipment. Hosting a website has a million tutorials available and everyone has the "equipment" at home.

Here's some background information about the song:
The members of Rammstein grew up in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), a country that was under the control of the Soviet Union (USSR). In the GDR, Western radio programs were banned, and people were only allowed to listen to state-approved GDR radio. However, the reception of West German radio programs extended into the GDR, allowing many people to listen to them illegally. Sadly, similar censorship practices are still used today by some countries to restrict internet access. Countries like those in the Middle East, North Korea, China, and (since the war against Ukraine) Russia, among a few others, block many websites.

Well, it wasn't only in GDR, it was over the whole area which was under USSR control. They managed to control it pretty well inland, but on edge areas they weren't as successful. Here in Estonia for example we heard radio from Finland and Sweden and could also see Finnish TV, all of which was of course very different then what USSR kept trying to feed to us.

Radio Free Europe broadcast into the Soviet Union and people would hack their radios (which were intentionally limited by the USSR to only recieve state propaganda) to be able to recieve RFE.
This also helped people during the Chernobyl disaster when RFE started broadcasting information and telling people how to protect themselves from radiation.

This song, "Radio", was released in 2019 along with Rammstein's untitled seventh studio album, the direct predecessor to their latest album titled "Zeit" ("Time", pronounced TSITE) which was released in 2022.

The lyrics and the video relate to the two times in Germany when listening to broadcast from foreign countries was prohibited by a totalitarian government. The first time was during Nazi Germany (1933-1945). People were sentenced to prison or even executed (e.g., google for Walter Klingenbeck) when listening to foreign radio broadcasts. The video makes visual references to this era (it is shot in black and white, set in the same time).
Then in the GDR (communist East Germany, 1949-1989) it was forbidden for members of the state organs of the GDR, such as the Army, the Ministry for State Security, the police and the fire department to receive Western television and radio stations. For the general citizens of the GDR it was different: Listening to broadcasts from the "class enemy" (i.e West Germany) was not punished by law but it could change career prospects. Rammstein's band members grew-up in the GDR.

Not being immersed in the genre is no fault of yours, but Rammstein are one of - if not - THE biggest metal band around today. They were actively touring during their 10- year hiatus between albums, released 2 albums within 2 years and have the biggest stage in the history of concert stages ever.

You should always watch the making of videos too. They give you the background infos are interesting and you see the six band members how they are outside of their stage characters.
How is this on UA-cam? Short answer: Art!
Please check out their new LP Zeit with their ultimate masterpiece Zeit. The video is outstanding and the song will hit you hard emotionally.

This is, quite simply, an ode to Radio Free Europe.
It was set up to broadcast radio from free Europe into the Soviet Union and its occupied territories - including East Germany, where several of the band members grew up.
While the Soviet Union controlled all radio and TV and attempted to limit what people could access, it was easy to "hack" radios you could buy in the USSR to recieve RFE. So, people like Till would tune in illegally and listen to Western music.

"Can we put titty in music video now?"... Well you should see their video for "Zeit" 😅
The bare-chested woman on the barricades is a play on a famous painting "Liberty Leading the People" of the French revolution. Because to them, growing up behind the iron curtain in East Germany, the radio was like a revolution. A way to "see" the world outside. Also the "Mein Radio Gehört mir" (My radio belongs to me) written on her chest is probably a play on "My body belongs to me" or something like that

They're still very popular, I've seen them in concert 3 times since last summer & they just played 5 nights in a row at Veltins Arena with a capacity of 62,000 audience each night to finish off their 2024 European tour. Their current show which just ended was probably the biggest production tour in the world this year & last year in terms of logistics & crew.
