Microchurches with KC Underground

KC Underground describes themselves as an innovative yet ancient form of church pursuing Jesus’ mission in Kansas City. They exist to inspire, engage, connect, equip and empower ordinary people to flourish in their souls and families, with that flourishing spilling over into mission where they live, work, learn, and play. Their goal is simple, to create a network of reproducing disciples, leaders, micro-churches, and congregations that will saturate Kansas City with the good news, justice and beauty. The name is a tribute to the underground church of history, characterized by sacrificial faith in the face of danger, oppression, and even death. We honor that memory and hope to represent that church in our city and around the world.
In this webinar we talk to Rob Wegner and Brian Johnson to hear more of KC Undergrounds story and explore a different model for being the church in the 21st Century.

REDISCOVERING NEW TESTAMENT ECCLESIA...
Am African and I connected a lot with what you're saying and doing. In my opinion the Bible in the the OT has a centralized institutional location-based worship model (Tabernacle, Temple, at Jerusalem), with full-fledged priesthood order (from a select tribe), ordinances of rituals, etc, but that was Israel as a nation of God's people. The NT devolves this model from the unity of location, to the unity of conviction (where two or three are gathered in my name), with the priesthood of all believers, and the ordinance of the liberty of the Spirit... The Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob had the OT view of worship and fellowship, Jesus corrected her by affirming the NT ecclesia - distributed, location-less, "in spirit and truth". The apostolic church was distributed across many small communities of believers, usually revolving around key ministers in residential or informal setting. Of course, it can be argued that this was convenient for the inception phase but that they outgrew the model, this is however a negation of the fact that the church was never defined as a place (which is the typical thinking now) rather than a people (which should always be the emphasis, even when structures and locations are involved). As for depth and breadth, most certainly the mictochurches model fulfills the Great Commission far more effectively and efficiently. I will follow and pray for your great success!

I think one of the misconception with these brothers is the nature of western Christianity vs non-western churches. They got it backwards western Christianity is extremely adaptive, non-dogmatic and hyper idiosyncratic whereas Gobal Christian is much more "confident" in its methods and message (dogmatic). Anyone that is familiar with Nigerian, Brazilian, or Korean churches for example can tell you this. Western Christianity specifically Evangelicalism is always trying to re-invent the Church and often even the message, which is why we see so much error and fragmentation. Missional flexibility is helpful, but it often gets co-opted into over adaptation and assimilation. The non western church approach is necessary precisely because it understands the Christ-against culture dynamic of the Gospel with embodied clarity.
