I took lessons off that very field,,,,did my private cross-country's from there. Was more interesting landing from the other direction. Line up for the paved cut left at last moment over the hangars using a light post as a reference and was below the trees then touch down and hold the yoke back for the bumps....loved it!!
That looks like fun. Attending grade school in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles in the mid 60's, a family from Hendersonville moved in down the street. We all became good neighborhood friends. The father was an early computer "greasemonkey" and traveled all over fixing them. Was always curious about the lay of the land from my new friends description of the area and the snowfalls and driveway sled rides. Big Hummel fan here. The half VW also. Thanks for letting me have a good look at Hendersonville. Leaves me wondering why they would leave such beautiful terrain for Los Angeles suburbia. My kingdom for a grass field like yours.
Thanks for posting your flight. I saw you fly over that day, around the 15 minute mark on your video. Heard the half VW and ran out to look. Ultracruiser is one of my favorites. Love the sound of that engine.
John, I love your videos. I am a retired engineer from Grumman Aerospace and a DMIR with Grumman. Its sparked an interest in the Hummel. Thanks.. I also live in Hendersonville.
Hi John my twin brother recently moved to Hendersonville and I was up there visiting recently . Love the area and I fly a Kolb firefly down here in Florida. April will be it's 20th anniversary of first flight. Loved your video. Hope to come up and visit sometime in the future Robinn Bassett. Ps can you give me a schedule of when the museum is open. Thanks
highly enjoyable, thank you. Calling out the airspeeds and altitude on finals would have enhanced it, but well done. Ps the canopy could do with a clean on the forward view..
I'm been researching about both Merlin Lites and Hummel Ultracruisers and I am looking at which one I would prefer. Do you have any opinions about this aircraft or possibly the other. Both are fantastic planes either way.
Hi! I just retired and have about given up on building a Sonex. I went to Oshkosh 2008 and bought plans, only to discover everyday life was too time consuming. My son in law is a pilot and I fly with him anytime. But, now i would really like to build an Ultracruiser. I live near Raleigh. Now I have a question about yours, how did they rig a starter on the half VW? I really hate hand proping, especially such a light aircraft. Well, thanks for the video and info along the way
Hi, enjoy the video. I am older 67 years old and thinking of looking for an ultra Cruiser ultralight. I see you on the video yours has electric start. The ones that I have looked at you have to hand prop which scares me. Do you have any information or know of any information of how to convert 1 to electric start? Thank you for any and all information appreciate it.
Thank you for sharing this. I’ve thought heavily on buying one of these. I believe I’m going to buy one ready from the manufacturer. I own land in Atlanta, where I can add a landing strip or I may pay to keep this at a private airport about thirty miles south of the city. My goal is to buy something I can fly from Atlanta to Savannah, which is about 223miles. The Hummel can fly 270 miles. I believe this would be a perfect way to enjoy traveling back to forth.
You account for headwind? I'm buying one too for travel but I'm modifying mine for extended range just incase sudden weather says no to my flight plan past half way.
Hi John, my name is Larry. I'm new to your channel. As a newbie to your channel I don't want to sound like a know it all. However, I'm pretty sure your propeller is either too much diameter or too much pitch. From what I understand when you push to full throttle your engine should go to redline. If it revs short then your diameter is too big and or your ptch is too much. If your motor can go beyond redline then your diameter is too small and or your pitch is too shallow. Either way you aren't able too enjoy the full capabilities of your aircraft. Your performance is falling short.

Looks like the plane flys very nice. Sweet flight! Jim

Thanks for the ride! Very cool
Thanks for the ride along !! Hummel is my favorite of them all !!
Good job, John! That was fun and enjoyed your narration.

Look at the Merlin Lite. Similar specs, more room. www.aeromarine-lsa.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Merlin-Lite-SNF-Brochure-2021.pdf
If there is a way to reach you , I'll show you the hummel....
Thanks for posting this John. Looks like a great airplane. I’ll have to visit sometime soon in the Mooney.
Great video John! Glad you're enjoying the little ultracrusier, hopefully I'll get up there and watch you flying!
Please show the airplane from the outside in your videos, even if it's just on the ground.
I will next time...

I am curious if you set lower in set . Maybe the camera is too high. I had a hard time viewing landing strip .looking through support. Tks

Inspiring

the guy who builds the motors has an aftermarket starter kit for them.. Hand propping always scared me...

Can you show us gps speed? Go pro has that option.
Hi John, I almost finish building my Hummel bird, and I have a question, did you use the whole VW, or 1/2VW? THANK YOU
1/2 vw, 37 hp...
Can you fly it with the canopy off?
Yes, and do in summer....
I thought if the cockpit is covered it's no longer considered an ultralight in the United States. Is this true?
No. As long as it meets the other requirements and weight it’s an ultralight.
Sweet lit’l bug
Hi John. What is your rate of climb?
600-800 FPM I dont push it, prefer airspeed...
What's your empty weight?
He is flying part 103 which he tells you at approx the 7 minute mark.
