I remember going to the lumber yard with my dad and loading up some sheets of plywood in the back of his Caddy. It stuck out the back a little but we made it home no problem. This is a fine example of some of GM's better Automobiles.
What a beauty.. the interior color is what I think a Cadillac should have.. its the best shade of blue. My favorite would be that trim with black paint, looking very Presidential. I enjoyed watching your video :) Regards, Jim
Just to add, what an array of color, choices an trim were available back in those days. Sadly we dont get much on offer these days, grey, beige, black.. how dull! Where did the flare for color go I wonder?
as a 22 years old guy that's living in a country that hates everything that is american, this is what i want. i don't want any of the modern mercedes and bmw crap.
Andrew Samy as a 17 year old Teenager in 1979 this is what I bought off my dads rich Uncle who was up from Florida selling his Fleetwood. I live in the UK and we never got these awesome vehicles officially on sale here. I haveseen and photographed a few of them at car shows over the years. I stand back inamazement at these huge great looking cars. Its hard to believe you Americans had big luxurious cars like this as everyday transport.
Boy-oh-boy, is that nice. Privacy glass all-around, is all I would add, then it would be perfect. People would be craning their necks on the freeway, trying to get a peek at who was inside ;)
My first car was a 1976 Sedan de Ville. It DOES look really sweet, and it rides VERY smoothly. Unfortunately, the one thing you CAN'T tell from these nice videos is that due to American BS pollution control rules and the "gas crisis" of the 1970's, the 1976 Cadillac (weighing in at about 5600 lbs) only had 190 bhp!!! My Caddy was sweet, and I was the envy of many of my High School comrades in the 80's, but it took a LONG time for her to get up to speed. Guys with Vettes and AMC Javelins smoked me. I realize this is a luxury car and not a sports-car, but only 190 bhp? That's PATHETIC for a car this size!
Cadillac frequently underrated the engines. More important, the 500 engine made 360 lbs-ft of torque, which allowed it to run the 1/4 mile in the 17s, about the same as a '75-'76 Lincoln. (Many econo cars of that era ran 19- to 20+ 1/4 mile times). Also, Hot Rod magazine bought a '76 500 Cadillac engine from a wrecking yard. They put it on a dyno and got the horsepower read out using the old "gross" method. It came in at 303 hp, not far off from the 390-cu-in Cadillac engine from 1959-1963.
My Mom had a 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham...basically a shorter version of a Lincoln. It was an early model...and, since Ford had gone to the 460, they emptied the remaining 429 engines. Her car run like a Torino...it had a Police Interceptor engine. Friends parents had Caddys, Buick, and Olds with 455, 472, and the mighty 500...the Merc ran circles around them. It had a 2.73 rear...it wouldn't go into 3rd until it hit 90. I ended up with it....I think it had 175k on it when we let it go...kinda wish I still had it.
I drove a 1973 Coupe dé Ville in Denmark from 1986 - 1995 and added over 65K miles to it - with a gas price of app. $1.5 per liter. Well, up untill 1989 I would drive across the border to Germany and fill it up for 1 DM (German Mark) per liter, but that ended. I would love to have one again. It was a great great car with a smooth ride and not slow at all. ua-cam.com/video/J8hhaOppCmA/v-deo.html I later had a 1978 Fleetwood Long Sedan Limousine (without partition) and added an equivalent amount of miles to it in a much shorter time. It was a great and strong car, but I do prefer the full-size model, especially from 1973 - 1976.
pfft. do you know anything about torque? i'm willing to believe this entire story is made up. you absolutely drove a base model 2001 toyota camry as your first car. i'm 27 and i betcha i'm not only older than you but have also owned more Cadillacs.
Nice, but Buick Park Avenue or Limited was a nicer car and the seats where much more plush. Even the Chrysler New York was much more beautiful and it's Corinthian leather seats where out of this world compared to Cadillac. But this Caddy is still a beauty. Cheers 🇨🇦
Great video of this 1976 Cadillac. It was ALMOST the longest 4 door hardtop that GM ever produced. However, that title goes to the same year Buick Electra which was 3 inches longer. Check out the one I just finished restoring: ua-cam.com/video/xDOZy7RQfKo/v-deo.html
I was always disappointed in GM in dropping the pillared hardtop design after 1970, a design FoMoCo used from 1958 to 1978. The GM cars '71 forward are uniformly shabby, poorly built creations compared to '70 and earlier--GM never again had the market share it held in 1970 and was on the road to the paltry 17.9% we have today. Such a sad turn for a once great corporation.
Gorgeous. My parents owned a '75, silver with a black vinyl top, and a dark red leather interior. It was a tank. Way better than Mom's 84 Eldorado with the awful HT4.1 V8 engine.
This particular car is impressively clean and unmolested. In the early 1980s, my father had a 1976 Oldsmobile 98 LS sedan which is quite similar. However, the Cadillacs predating this year by 10 model years or so are better cars. The 1971, 1972, and 1973 Devilles are less fussy in design. 1970 and earlier years had better overall quality of fit and finish. This model year had high sales and production which infamously hurt Cadillac's quality control. Also, the Lincoln Continental had a better overall design in 1976: fenders that were visible from the driver's seat, doors that had a lighter feel during operation and didn't take a hard slam to shut close, power seat controls on the armrest, front seat cushions that are more supportive and not so flat, a more massive and deeper trunk which allowed upright storage of bulkier packages, pillared "colonnade" center pillars providing better structural integrity, and a ride that was judged superior in those notable ads.

Some BMW's, Benz, Audi, and now Genesis are approaching the size and definitely the weight of these vintage cars.
No BM or Mercedes that I have seen come close in size to your old land Yachts. And for me non of them have the Wow factor that your old cars once had.
Yes, true. That '76 Sedan de Ville is 230.7 inches long and the modern BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Genesis are only about 200-208 inches long.
I love this car what a beauty
