Shadow isn't really an edgelord, he's a hero who's like an introvert that many kids can relate and further more he does care about people and his friends, he just has a hard time displaying his emotions, and no matter what Shadow the Hedgehog will always be my favorite Sonic character ❤️🖤

Yes. I definitely totally agree with you. Shadow is someone I too can relate as well also. In fact, I had someone who was like Maria Robotnik but different though who sadly died from Cancer last year in 2022. Her named was Brandi Smith. She was a really good, sweet, caring, & kind hearted person who cared about people even me too as well & was my Bestfriend. I’m forever sad she’s gone & not with me anymore but I will never forget about her & made a promise I would never forget about her even till the very end of the day for me. Shadow though will always also be my most favorite Sonic Character in all of Sonic Adventure Video Games History till I’m back dead again from the very beginning after I came back to Life at Henry Ford Hospital back in 1996. 5 years later before Shadow would be first introduced in “Sonic Adventure 2” back in 2001. Both Me & Shadow are basically just alike but
different races & personalities. I will always look up to Shadow & not just him though but Sonic too as well along with Sliver, Espio, Tails, Knuckles, & other Male Characters I just love them all the most. Forever True Legends in my own eyes till this very day for me once again

Y’know, how I see Shadow is this:
Shadow isn’t an edgy guy who just wants to be mean to everybody.
He’s a calm, collected, serious, a bit blunt, and righteous guy who’s just happens to be recovering from trauma and it’s just taking him a long time to get through that darkness
He’s also a gruff but seasoned veteran who’s been through a lot

1:10 06 Shadow is the best Shadow. That game did many things wrong but the characterization was far from one of them. It was in 06, that Shadow’s character development truly peaked.

I think the character writing in ‘06 is the highlight of it, and Shadow in particular is amazing. He feels perfectly written. He’s moody and a bit blunt, but very open about his care and respect for his friends. He’s a hero.

Griffith is easily my favorite Shadow voice. It's way more interesting for Shadow to be, as opposed to being loud with a touch of nasally, quieter and more soft-spoken. On top of being great for his characterization, it also works as a great contrast to Sonic's tendency to speak loud and proud.

Maekawa sees Shadow under this light. He is the one who described Shadow as 'subtle and pure'. Izuka is the one who sees Shadow as an edgelord without any good qualities.
You know what would really be cool? If Sonic and Shadow acted more like friends or even brothers in the future games. They've done a lot together, it's only natural for them to be close.

Ik you didn't ask me but I'll answer however.
An anti-hero is someone who lacks conventional heroic qualities; traits as optimism, loyalty, idealism, courage, and morality; they may perform heroic acts but not for heroic reasons.
I think that's anti-Shadow's character. He may not be optimistic but he certainly is very loyal, especially to Maria, and to Team Dark. To me, his idealism forms in, funnily enough, how ambitious he was in fulfilling Maria's promise to which he thought was destruction of the world but the moment he remembers her true promise, his first course of action is to save the world.
He's very courageous and sacrificed himself to save the world, and need I say about 06? "If the world chooses to be my enemy... Then I'll FIGHT like I always have!"
Another trait of his idealism is how he still works under G.U.N after what they did 50 years ago, he forgave them because he saw they changed. He believes in the goodness of people. But I also believe he's less optimistic than Sonic and works with them to keep an eye on G.U.N should they become a threat.
And his morality, well, he's a very moral character. Even before his memory restoration, he saved Rouge first time when he remembers how he lost Maria in SA2 despite not sharing a close relationship then in 06 he chose to save Rouge's life over sealing Mephiles.
He's a badass black hedgehog who looks scary and serious, and started out as the main villain but beneath the rough exterior is a true softie at heart who lost his only friend tragically and wants nothing more than to let her soul rest easy by fulfilling her promise. I think you should look at his design and focus on the white fur, they kind of resemble a white heart with spike-y edges, perhaps to symbolise his nature? I dunno ;)
As for Batman, I think he's most similar to Batman from The Animated Series. I think he's the most compassionate Batman and he's also a favourite. Idealistic and ambitious, practical, serious, rugged, but ultimately kindhearted. 😊
tldr: Not an anti-hero; kinda like Batman, yeah.

Shadow is someone who selflessly sacrifices himself for the sake of others constantly. It isn't just for Maria; he does it for Team Dark, and frequently shows concern and worry for people like Sonic. He's cocky and headstrong, but he backs down and evaluates his decisions fairly frequently.
Earnestly, his behaviour in a lot of his prominent roles seems more Herculean than anything else. Someone who uncomplainingly accomplishes great tasks, for the sake of some greater idea.
Shadow actually sounds soft spoken I never thought he was like that in the beginning. Recent sonic games give off the impression he’s always been this edgy broody dangerous being. It’s actually great to see shadows always been compassionate even if he hides and his voice showcases him being cool and collected which has always been in character for him
And now that The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is out, we can add Shadow trying to buy Amy concert tickets for her birthday (and agreeing to accompany her to said concert despite the music not being his cup of tea), and helping Sonic to rescue Amy and Tails.
Anyway, thanks for compiling this video. I can show it to people on social media who claim Shadow never acts like this.

Shadow is considered to be a tragic hero, especially with what happened in the past with Maria. I love how he slowly develops as a character and keeps his promise to his beloved friend. After everything that happened he fights for what is right and that’s what makes him so likeable. Shadow is an amazing character 🖤
People often forget that the writing of Shadow The Hedgehog was neccesary to tie Heroes and 06 together. Realistically speaking, just because someone says they will stop thinking about the past, it doesn't mean they can let go instantly. The game opens up with Shadow literally asking himself why he is still haunted by his past. The song:"Never turn back" also gives reference to this with the verse:"I take one step forward and two steps back. Got a 100000 pounds sitting on my back". This is the trauma and burden that he still carried. It was only after defeating Black Doom that he could truly let go and move on. '06 adds to this development by giving Shadow a heroic medley when he appears or makes an important decision. It's brilliant writing!

I think he is always slightly sad. That aura never fully leaves him (I'm talking about his original characterization, not the edgelord) but he is also fun, likeable, so his sadness doesn't ruin him.
Shadow may be a little edgy at times, but he also has a caring side especially to his friends like Rouge and Omega from Team Dark. And even though Shadow and Sonic fight sometimes, they'll have each other's backs no matter what happens and it's so sweet he's going to keep his promise to Maria of protecting Earth and everyone in it. Plus I relate to Shadow and Knuckles being introverts.☺️👍

I really love Shadow’s characterization in the older games; he’s like the Batman of the Sonic the Hedgehog Franchise. He’s cold and brooding, but underneath it all, he’s caring, kind, and heroic.
He might be Sonic’s arch-rival, but I believe he also considers Sonic a friend, and cares for him, based on various interactions they’ve had.

This is why I view this version of Shadow and the 2010's variant as separate characters.
In many aspects they're the opposite. I think the trait I notice most in early Shadow is his melancholy. He also was quite mischievous (mainly toward Sonic and it worked because Sonic back then was short tempered, Shadow was not) and sometimes very youthful and fun. He was always subtle, he seemed almost detached but he was not. He was somewhat insecure and fragile. He was thoughtful but also very stubborn, that made him difficult do deal with even if he was not grumpy. All his traits were very balanced.
Edgelord Shadow seems content overall. He's not half as smart as the original Shadow and can be a troublemaker. He is selfish and not fun at all and I would gladly see him thrown in the Sun.

I haven’t played it but I heard it was good!
Shadow certainly can be vicious, and cold and cruel. Case in point in Sonic X when he tried to kill Cosmo after finding out she was an UNWITTING (key point there) Metarex Spy, when he was willing to hurt Chris a full on child while Chris was trying to convince him to save humanity, and his overall disdain towards humanity shows us this. HOWEVER his disdain towards humans which actually is called misanthropy doesn't come from out of nowhere, considering human beings killed Maria, a child while he was helpless to watch.
Shadow's complexity comes from his trauma, which sadly isn't explore because of Sega's mandates. And it's because of those mandates that cause this hedgehog to suffer. BUT thanks to Sonic Prime he seems to have been completely righted, all that's missing is his friends Rouge and Omega. He glanced at her in her stuck timeloop state, so maybe that's a hint to him being allowed to have friends? Here's hoping.
But there's always more to this hedgehog than people realize. He's not an edgelord, he's an introvert, yet he knows when to work with others. He can be kind, yet harsh, he can be swift and severe yet sympathetic and collected. His duality is why he's such a fascinating character, and it's high time he gets the respect he deserves from Sega and the fans.

In Sonic X shadow is more bold and straightforward in everything, including showing affection (through touch language too). Game Shadow was way more subtle and cool headed.
maekawa was always pretty passionate about making shadow a character that cares deeply for others, even if he doesn't express it verbally. when someone needs help, he acts and acts quick, and is hesitant to accept when he can't
06 shadow is the reason I want Maekawa back.
Shadow managing to hold on to all that good inside him throughout all his trauma makes him my favorite Sonic character. He’s such a great foil to Sonic’s more carefree do gooder kind of attitude, they’re both cool but shadow just brings his own spin while managing to be a different kind of relatable. As Shadow would say about himself, he’s the coolest.

Forces aside who relies on the post 2010 Sonic, this is the real Shadow the Hedgehog. The one who is antisocial, distant, and would be around to protect the world whenever Sonic needs assitance or is unavailable. He's not just a more serious Sonic or a villain but someone who is conplex. Sonic 06 was not the best game, but that concept they did with Shadow should have been used more. Shadow and Rouge's friendship? Shadow and Amy's friendship? Expand on it! You built on something there. Even Shadow and Cream could have worked as friends like Sapphira Luna did. Shadow and Sonic could even have quippy sessions where the former is exasperated with his antics but understands that he has a good heart and Sonic helps him let people in.
Insert all of the Shadow 2005 Hero Route.
Shadow just has his own way of doing things, he cuts straight to the point, and stops at nothing until he fulfils his objective in the most efficient way possible. He can be either flexible, or extremely uncompromising, depending on the situation, and any new information that may yield a more satisfactory result. He's got a very "the end justifies the means" lense, but not to fault. He has been shown to have a sense of morality when it counts.

I love how most of this is Sonic 06, proof that he was best written in _that_ game. You may not like the story or the glitchy gameplay, but you gotta admit that when it came to character writing, it was peak. We got the best villain from that game. (The only character that ruined it was Elise, although I will admit her story was well written... but that kiss man... It just... tainted it all)

Thankfully, Sonic Prime brought us the stoic, feisty, serious, level-headed Shadow back.
Let’s not forget that towards the end of his own game, Shadow vowed to leave the past behind which even lead him to become a G.U.N. agent with Rouge, the same organization that took away his best friend. This is either a huge contradiction or a huge highlight of his strength as a character.

You see this? This is how Shadow is meant to be. He’s not an edge lord or an Antihero, he is a hero who has his own ways of fighting evil. Never seen shadow as an Edgelord, but rather a stoic, misunderstood and quite a unique anti-hero. Yeah, he may have been manipulated out of his own memories after the events of Adventure 2 and heroes, but at the end, he's still him.
shadow's own game is effectively him going through a mental breakdown/depression/relapse into evil depending on route. The entire game has him act abnormal because having a mental breakdown breaks a character down. it should not be used however for the basis of his entire modern personality after overcoming said mental issues instead you should look at sonic heroes, 06 and sa2 near the end. Basing shadow's entire modern iteration after a version of him that is him having mental issues after overcoming said issues is not really in character for him to be.
besides shadow the hedgehog made 06's shadow story look better so i'll give it credit for that and the fact that bioweapons would be given guns if america or any military was involved in any fashion

You wanna know the funny about Shadow to me, he's basically like Riku from Kingdom Hearts. They both start off doing bad things and by the end of the first game, they learn the error of their ways and would spend the next few games redeeming themselves. I know a lot of fans compare Shadow to Vegeta from DBZ, but I never saw Shadow as that despite what Sega tries to do with Shadow's character in the spin off game and the 2010s.
You could also compare Shadow to Mewtwo from Pokémon The First Movie Mewtwo Strikes Back (though specifically the dub version, since Mewtwo wasn’t evil in the original sub) which if you ask me is a better comparison than Vegeta. With Vegeta, I suppose out of any Dragon Ball character, he is the most fitting for Shadow, and there are some similarities, but are still very different in many ways.
Oh, and this is one I saw that I’ve never even thought about. Apparently some people compare him to Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7. That’s an interesting one.

That’s a true video, SA2, Heroes and 06 are my favorite versions of Shadow the Hedgehog while his 2005 game, Sonic Boom and Forces are the worst part of his character.

If we look at the Japanese versions of his game and Boom, wich are most likely the actual stories, these are not bad characterizations at all. In the opening of Shadow the Hedgehog there's already a big change, since he doesn't say "Pathetic humans", only that the matter it's not of his concern, wich makes way more sense, since he has amnesia. Also, through the majority of the game he acts in-character, and doesn't say lines like "TaKIng CandY fROm bAbIES IS fINe by Me". In Boom they gave him a actual reason to act that way and fight with Sonic, because he was being mind controlled by Lyric or something like that.
People mostly take in consideration the american dubs, wich added desnecessary lines and removed crucial details of the games.

Sounds silly but thank you for making this! Sick of seeing these over the top edgy versions of him! This is the shadow i know an love! Like soft spoken, shy(asocial) but willing to help when he can. Clam, collected an adores his small group of friends. Its really a shame team dark isnt really seen together anymore cause i LOVE thier chemistry!! This is what shadow will always be to me! An its nice to see other see him as his true self too ^^
You are welcome! This is what true Shadow fans see in Shadow, not some edgelord. This is the Shadow that us as the audience can connect to, relate to, and even inspire to be like. I want to see more of this kind of Shadow (which it seems like Sonic Prime is doing at the moment which makes me very happy) and I hope we do. He might be a brooding guy, but he’s also got a kind heart deep down in there.
