In the past when I've asked "why am I in this meeting?" or "what is my role in this meeting" - I've been told to just attend. So not everyone can say "NO MAS". It depends on the company culture. And with Agile - I've had to attend daily standup meetings, retrospective meetings etc. along with meetings at various levels and focuses. Most have no agenda, no one is taking minutes and no one is accountable for actions from meetings. It is Company Culture that needs to improve. Meetings do not equal collaboration and being a team player on a global scale.

This video is so relevant, if not even more relevant, today. I have clients who have 6, yes 6x1 hr meetings a day!!.. I use this video a lot and some clients are making changes in their lives. An updated one may be a great idea:)

bad meetings are painful and draining. NO MAS will work when invitation is from a friend or acquittance. In establishments where its your duty to attend those things, which strategy is better?

Listening to this talk reminded me of sitting in a meeting. It gave me a chance to enjoy my liquor and ignore the core components of the conversation.
Idk what's up with the comments section - this is a problem I've dealt with, with small business, non-profit work, church related meetings, and otherwise. It's painful to be a part of and I feel like David presented some basic material, in a humorous way, and in a short period of time. He didn't take up 15 mins to say what he could in 6 - I wish more people did this! As for the canned laughter, I think that's more due to his style. It seems like he's building up to punch lines and calling back to earlier jokes, kind of like a comic? I don't see what's wrong. Seems like he did his job well.
It would be interesting if some online conferencing tools would have an option not to allow people joining a meeting 3 minutes after its start
generally I avoid meetings and attempt to convey or receive information from a phone call, email, or one on one visit via Skype, and as a last resort, meet in purpose. not a rule, but a guide. exceptions made if it is a brainstorming session, or other critical topic of discussion

mad respect to all the people out there trying to develop people skills and actually need this ted talk. now get back to work and make my frankenstein stand on the table.
Also people have lost the art of picking up the phone.

i have the opposite problem: i don't get invited to enough meetings. I actually feel left out at times

I have a co-worker who hates anyone who clicks the "?" for attending. Seriously, my first day, I clicked that because I'm unsure if it'll be relevant because I was training. "Hey new kid, you click yes or no to attend meetings. Got it?"
She walked to my cube to say that, so now I hold a grudge against her. I mean "Hey kid" I was 20 years old like really?

Pie in the sky. Most meeting are put up by managers. As a worker, you cant push back like he wants you to do in the meeting.
Sure you can. Just give him a call or a chat and ask why you were invited. If you believe you cannot contribute to the meeting, just tell him.

It its your manager, or your manager's manager then you go to their meeting and smile or you find another job.
Thats how it is in the IT industry. Dont know about yours.
ndyt I agree with Flarus, at least in my company / job. If it's different in yours I hope for you it changes soon.
***** You are assuming that people are always reasonable or can be reasoned with, and if that was true, there wouldn't be any problem in the first place. 'Managers' at my company feel it is their duty to use meetings as micro-management sessions. They call ALL their staff biweekly or monthly and ask people individually about their current issues. Of course there is a minority who love this micro-management because it relieves them of all obligations as someone will always check on them, 'managers' feel in control, and rest of us suffer listening to every tedious detail of our departments business process. And OK, you don't have to be Borg about it and comply, but to 'managers' you are actually saying you don't care enough about your work and company no matter how well you reason your absence.
SALES MEETINGS!
Being a sales-person means your time is your most precious commodity. Managers who call these meetings to encourage higher productivity don't recognize that their meetings are cutting into productivity!

I hate the audience for this TED. However, this is a pretty relevant problem and something that I've come across far too many times... even recently... as of this past Friday.
You know what? Bad meetings are still here in 2023! 🤣
Solution: Have a time limit for meetings, 30 min max

NO
As a worker, you cant push back like he wants you to do in the meeting.
If you have an option to do work, to write e-mails, send quotations, make plans undistracted during a meeting, why refuse it, why go into a useless conversation? Just keep up and use it.
Who needs to be efficient anyway? Office work is just a new kind of slavery without physical effort.

I'll give him the part about "Mindless Accept Syndrome" being a global problem. He's just not quite seeing the forest for the trees.
In civilised countries workers just get their orders and have to work normal time
Actually, kids brought up on with the internet, the very same generation we associate with "shorter and shorter attention span" and "instant gratification", they are the ones who suffer the least from MAS. But we call it "no patience whatsoever". They don't pay attention unless you really have something to say, like TED presentations yay! Us adults are trained to respect, and accept, and we call it maturity. Time and place for everything. This little talk was more about changing up corporate hierarchies and management structures. Best of luck with that humans, seriously please succeed.

They have a laugh sign to tell the audience that something is a joke or what? This is just painfull to watch.

That laughter seems so exaggerated an unnatural, that it's highly off-putting.

I guess anybody can do a TED talk. Or attend and laugh on cue. Who is this guy, what does he know? Thank god this was only 6 minutes long. He sure didn't contribute anything.
