I remember talking to an African, he was here for work. Super awesome dude, always positive. His wife was dealing with depression coming to Canada. He said the medication given for depression isn't the same at home. His home they make you go into community mode. Everyone gathers for you and with you to do things in the community. Other wives would help her. She went back home to receive the care she missed the most.
We are social beings that are conditioned to live in individualist society, so ofc these stuff would happen, unfortunately. We need to bring community based back!
That’s beautiful. And makes perfect sense. She was cared for by her loved ones and community and she probably feels the motivation and almost obligation to get better. Should be mandatory here to be helped/healed by community 😢
The nuclear family system is somewhat the root cause of it. I remember growing up in a big household with grandparents and parents living together and had a sense of neighborhood. I never once felt I was overthinking at the slightest and don’t get me wrong , things were hard back then too but there was a sense of support and uplifting nature in the community. Where ALL WAS ONE
@@alphaakshaydhama5834 I think it’s more so that people are terminally online. We as a society need to unplug regularly instead of 24/7 social media. I’m guilty as well (I’m commenting here lol) but the amount of times I see parents and kids texting at the table at a restaurant is weird. Less kids playing at the park than I remember as a kid. A football program in my neighborhood is going away because of low enrollment. Each generation wants to spend less time with people.
Meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy has taken me from seriously depressed, self-harming, suicidal at times, and drinking heavily to feeling generally happy, content, and free of any mood swings for almost 8 years now. Abstaining from booze is highly recommended for anyone with depression!
A clear-calm mind is what everybody wants and I'm grateful for having it. I feel utmost silence in my mind such that I can focus on anything effectively. I feel a gentle sensation throughout my body as a result of deep meditation. I have attained control over my mind and I allow only positive thoughts to enter in. My habits have uplifted my mood and I'm happy about this.
But this is NOT the goal of meditation / mindfulness. The goal is not to control your thoughts and “only allow positive thoughts in” or even to silence your thoughts. This is impossible. None of that is the goal. This is a common misconception. The goal of meditation/ mindfulness is simply to observe and let it go… _without judgement._ Thoughts are neither negative or positive, they just *are.* There is no way to silence our minds or experience only “positive” thoughts. It sounds like you haven’t studied meditation/ mindfulness to say these things.
Since doing a ten minute meditation practice every day for a year I can see several benefits. Less emotional reactivity, more space and distance from thoughts and stories about myself. This has lead me to be more engaged in my life.
@@jodiescott8731Hi! It was a 10 minute unguided meditation. Just set a timer. Usually I follow my breath. If I’m in a stressed out state I will say inwardly: In then out and so on. I sometimes include the practice of counting down and counting up. This involves saying inwardly: 30 then 1, 29 then 2, 28 then 3, etc. It’s great way to train your attention. Hope this helps!
I just want to say thank you very much Steven, for taking the time to reply and give me a guided start. I have been through a very traumatic experience, and greatly needed a start with meditation to hopefully improve my life. So much appreciated. :)
After 129 days of daily meditation and mindfulness study, my life is changed. It’s so wonderful to have a cure for stress and anxiety and now I’m finding all the scientific reasons why. Fascinating
@@Tanisha0320 speaking from longterm experience, it’s best to not think of it as “you” curing something. Think of the brain as any other organ. The heart pumps blood, the lungs pump air, the kidneys filter blood. You can’t stop them from performing these functions. Just like those organs, the brain produces thoughts. That’s what it does. You actually can’t stop it anymore than you can stop the heart pumping. What you feed is he brain, it then uses in its production. If you feed yourself only water, after a while your kidneys produce very clear urine. If you feed your brain silence, after a while it produces silence. You actually don’t have to do any trying. Just like drinking only water will produce clear urine, consuming silence will eventually produce silence, which then focuses attention (mindfulness). You won’t have any say in it. It’ll just happen. It’s bizarre.
Been meditating for more than a year and a half, every day with only a few days missed now, and I can say my life changed significantly for the better. I started small (basics, 3 minutes a day) and then incorporated 10 minutes of Headspace mindfulness meditation after brushing my teeth, every morning. Now it is a routine I hardly would like to give up and when there're moments of stress (resistance to the idea of practicing mindfulness) I find that just getting started, will afterwards resolve by itself.through the very act.of meditating in a mindful way. This is a skill that, once honed, can be used again and again and again.

Alexandru Gheorghe I began my meditation practice much the same way. About 2 years ago, very skeptical, a bit at a time. Found both Headspace and Calm app to be very useful. Now, I can’t imagine a day without formal meditation and informal mindfulness. It has allowed me to find more acceptance, happiness and the ability to be more present more often.
I really loved this talk. I've been mediating for the past 10 months, and have experienced the benefits: I have come to accept my anxiety, live with it peacefully, and it happens this has reduced my anxiety. I'm sleeping 8 hours a day (sometimes even 10), when a year ago I needed to take medication to sleep. I am kinder to myself, and I also think others (my close friends tell me I am more loveable). I tend to be kinda impulsive, now I can catch myself before I burst out (most of the time). I concentrate better at work, I have reduced my news intake and generally negative media intake, and list goes on and on... But what I really loved about this talk is that it takes midfulness to the next level. Mindfulness is not just meant to help us as individuals, but as a society. AMAZING!
I have been paralyzed by loneliness, lack of purpose, feeling of anger and depression for many years. It is only through meditation that I find deep peace and contentment. A photographer is taking a picture, he has the camera in his hand. But if that camera is moving up and down, he will not be able to take any picture perfectly. That picture will be blurred or it will be spoiled. So in order to take a perfect picture he has to hold that camera completely stationary. In the same way when a person meditating, the mind become the camera and the object becomes the energy of God,the Cosmic Energy,or the universal spirit or universal Energy. So when the mind takes a picture, first of all the mind has to be stationary, it has to be concerned. If the mind is moving up and down there'll be no experience of God and that's what happens to many people. But when the mind becomes stationary, through meditation , through concentration, then the mind is in a position to take picture of that Universal Spirit. So that is why, in order to experience, to get the experience we have to understand that we have to control the mind , make this mind stationary ,which is very important.
After consistently practicing ten minutes of meditation daily for a year, I've experienced various benefits. Reduced emotional reactivity and increased mental space, distancing myself from thoughts and self-narratives

Wow! I just tried this simple exercise with a few people in my life, & I felt an instant wave of relief & calmness come over me. The tension in my shoulders melted away, & I felt so relaxed. This talk is spot on. I have been following a positive mind set for the last 10 years and it has dramatically changed my life around. I start out each day with saying a group of positive affirmations based on my personality.
I got really good at doing all those things. And still do. I have a lot of pain and surgeries and it is very hard to distract myself from the pain I do breathing exercises and been a meditater for quite a few years. a few areas. I have lost my passion which was the love and ability to see my grandchildren, this really threw me for a loop I did not see this coming I have mostly detached from it after 18months. My daughter-in-law is a narcissist. I resolved I can still love them and pray that this will will change. I have to get my sparks back. I had things I was passionate about but couldn't follow threw because of my health. I meditate to turn my thoughts off. But it doesn't work on my emotions. Feelings are painful especially grief have to be felt. But for how long? There are 2 opinions 1. They need to be controlled. 2. They need to be felt. 3. That is what I need to know? Meditation works and positivity. I now have a great deal of positivity affirmations and live a comfortable life. So that is not a problem anymore.

So, I'm brand new to Christianity, and this feels like such a great practical lesson of the Bible's principles! Pray for your enemies. What a great prayer! "May you be happy. May you be free of suffering." I love it. 🥰🙏 I am also new to practicing mindful compassion, especially with people I disagree with. Another principle the Bible teaches: compassion and loving everyone. That's so cool it lines up well with Buddhism, too. Love everyone, including yourself, including your enemies. People deserve love, because they are human. Not because of their behaviors or opinions.
Well said. Been practiced mindfulness (positive affirmations, mindful walking and yoga) for a few months. Not just through mindfulness, but learning about the Taoist, Buddhist and Stoic beliefs that are at its core, I see now it is possible to self treat chronic depression and anxiety. I was convinced that my forever narrative was that I would always be this way, it’s in my family, it’s from being raised by certain kinds of emotional role models, etc., and I’d forever be on meds. I’m a family doctor and see it so much every day. Since starting on this road, and though I’ll never get to perfect enlightenment, which should not be the focus, I have become less worried, less down, less anxious, and recommend it now to patients. Some still need meds to get out of the present hole they’re in but I can say too that it doesn’t have to be a permanent thing. What a life changer, by re-creating one’s mind. For the first time I’ve SLOWLY started to cut back the dosage and not felt a relapse. Fingers crossed.
I got emotional reading this because A, I am so heartened to hear of your journey, and B, such resonance with my own! I spent YEARS in such a funk because I believed such painful narratives about myself. Nowadays, after years and years of study and training (and being still such a beginner!), it is not that I do not get into dark places; it is that the light of awareness does wonders. May you be happy and free from suffering!
The synchronization in my energy is crazy awesome right now. I was just talking about a meditation that sends love and kindness towards other, and then I listen to this video. 🙏🏼
I have meditate for 10 years sometimes for more then 3 hours a day and yes meditation seems to influenced synchronicity with that said you phone pick up a small words and objects you hang around send signal to your phone. That’s is the true power of syncronicity.
thank you so much for this talk. It validated myself, this morning, reinforcing my belief in me and my sound mind. Left a romantic relationship with a Narcissist recently. Still dealing with their gas-lighting but, like after a hard bicycle ride or doing those leg exercises that hurt so much; the first day after, you just ache, moaning and groaning about the pain. The following days you revel in your new found strong feeling and commend yourself for subjecting to that pain. Peace

Awesome. I’m a buddhist and we are taught to do this since i can remember. It’s myit tar poe. Sending your wishes and gratitudes to others. Generally we do that in directions. Eg like, To the universe, the living creatures in east, may all be free from danger, may all be away from disturbances that affect peaceful state of mind, may all can find peacefulness and tranquility. Then we repeat with west, north, south, up and down, NE, SE, NW, SW u can expand depending on the amt of available time u have. We do actually have a prayer song to this. People usually play it in morning n we can just follow it. With peaceful and calm background music, u can actually feel the effect right away. That’s how many people starts their day as a theravada buddhist.
@@illyrosen9772 The simple way is to think about the situation when you felt love. Like hugging somebody you love, a child, or even your pet. The best memories are when you felt the mutual love that you shared with somebody. But other happy memories are good too, like watching beautiful landscape or feeding birds. It is an individual thing. When you think about moments you felt love you start feeling love. It doesn't even have to be a real memory. You just have to think about something that makes you feel love. It works the same with all emotions. Thinking about the moment when you felt an emotion connects you to this emotion and you start feeling it (generating it). Sad moments, angry moments, peaceful moments, etc. After some practice, you will be able to generate love just by wishing to feel it, and eventually, you will feel it almost all the time. It will be harder to do when you are in a bad mood but it still works, you just have to make a bigger effort.
@@illyrosen9772 i find the easiest way is to always have at least one person you can practice love for daily. If you dont currently have an SO or not around family members, a dog works just as well.

What helped me alot distancing myself from my inner narrator is meditating before going to sleep, just UA-cam 'guided meditation before bed'. I practice gratitude or mindfulness depends on how I feel. no longer than 15 minutes usually, and not even every night.
Dr. Davidson do you know the power of unconditional love and how to identify in a person if they are expressing unconditional love . Most people I’ve researched don’t know if they love unconditionally or don’t know how to identify if they are. I created a method that discovers if a person does or does not. When I perform my method on them an instant transition of awareness takes place in their minds and there hearts. As a result of this method there perception of life changes almost instant . It’s amazing . The most important factor is that this experience and the emotion can and will last a lifetime !!!!
“May you be well and happy, May you be free from suffering, May you be strong and healthy.” I am a Theravada Buddhist and I practise this daily several times a day. This is called Loving Kindness Meditation (Metta Bhavana) in Buddhism. There are two more Buddhist meditations that I practise. They are Concentration Meditation (Samatha Bhavana), and Insight Meditation (Vipassana Bhavana). I have learnt these three meditation techniques from London Buddhist Vihara, UK. Meditation has brought me and millions of people peace of mind.

It's what helped me totally transform my life.
I like how I discovered this with my own needs; when I wasn't thinking that depressed, I was like "again, a viral'd mental term?". But when I was so desperate that I could literally die unless I take action, I went to truly understand why this is a thing.

Richard J. Davidson was on the BBC last night talking about this very thing. I was so glad to learn about this study! I have had some problems that have not been solved with antidepressants etc., and I have been looking for a healthy way to rewire my brain in a more positive way for years. I have had some very positive results from meditation in the past, but I fell off the horse, so to speak. I think this sounds promising, and I am very excited to get started, though I know that it will be "a process", and I just need to be patient, and the progress will happen eventually. Patience is not my one of my strengths, but then that is one of main reasons why I need this so badly! Thanks to TED talks, and thanks to Mr. Davidson!

Shows you why prayer works. No one is listening, but it helps YOU feel better.. Maybe somehow, the energy from our mind/soul goes out to the world & makes some good changes eventually.
I don't know if Jesus or God is listening or not, but I do know many people I respect believed God was listening, examples Dr Martin l King Abraham Lincoln Deitrick Bonhoeffer Jimmy Carter Francis Collins mahute ghandi and John Kennedy.
There’s something I don’t understand. It seems to be generalized that a wandering mind is something to be condemned. But I take so much enjoyment in just stopping for a while and letting my mind free and wander on its own, navigating the various aspects and particularities of my life inside of my head, organizing thoughts and seeing things clearer. It gives me so much understanding about myself and makes me feel so much more fulfilled.

Yes, Be Still and Know that I am God. Old Testament: people ask what does praying do and what does it change? It changes us, our sadness, our worry, our loneliness, our pain, and gives us peace. There is no 'downside' to belief and following God.

I’m so touched by Dr Davidson’s eagerness to impart this knowledge. His gesture while speaking shows compassion, kindness and desire for happiness for everyone.
Being mindful led me to find the love of my life but I got way too lazy. I was mindful for the months prior and a couple of months into the relationship but it’s so easy to drift a away and be sucked into the relationship more than your own personal life. Take it from me - always pay attention to your feeling and the world around you. Don’t lose yourself. Be mindful.
Just took a mindfulness class at my university and it definitely was eye opening. I still struggle with keeping a meditation routine but when I do meditate the results are always amazing. I feel calm, focused and clear on whats actually important in the present moment. God bless you all!

Meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy has taken me from seriously depressed, self-harming, suicidal at times, and drinking heavily to feeling generally happy, content, and free of any mood swings for almost 8 years now. Abstaining from booze is highly recommended for anyone with depression!
I'm struggling and suffering with anxiety and depression. Newly sober, is there something you can refer me to for mindfulness?

Some scholar once said, "Be mindful as if ur life depends on it.", I think it makes sense.
How did you do? What kind of meditation did you do?
Me too
Please tell me how! Desperately need to quieten by busy mind
Oh how I wish to be you… it’s not the easiest.

What was the 10 minute meditation practice please
@@jodiescott8731Hi! It was a 10 minute unguided meditation. Just set a timer. Usually I follow my breath. If I’m in a stressed out state I will say inwardly: In then out and so on. I sometimes include the practice of counting down and counting up. This involves saying inwardly: 30 then 1, 29 then 2, 28 then 3, etc. It’s great way to train your attention. Hope this helps!
I just want to say thank you very much Steven, for taking the time to reply and give me a guided start.

😊😊😊
Would love to hear more about how you accomplished this. Struggling here

I’ve always known that positivity, focus & gratitude are key to happiness, but I had no idea something so simple could bring such instant relief. I wish he presented more exercises like this in the video.

An unhappy mind is one that still exists, wandering or not.
Where is the proof in this? There is none.

What is the name of the prayer song? ;-)

The moment you become aware of your unawareness is the moment of mindfulness
Conclusion: generating a feeling of love as often as possible will eventually remove the reasons for suffering.
Thank you!
and how do you do that?

I have recently started being more calm and more composed in mind after being years of overthinking and reactive behaviour. One of my friend gave me an advice, do things with sincerity and leave rest to God, Always understand that if you work hard and avoid negative people and associate yourself with a community that treats you like a being, we have the power to control our realities The nuclear family system is somewhat the root cause of it. I remember growing up in a big household with grandparents and parents living together and had a sense of neighborhood. I never once felt I was overthinking at the slightest and don’t get me wrong , things were hard back then too but there was a sense of support and uplifting nature in the community. Where ALL WAS ONE

A whole world has opened in front of me. Thank you Richard, your speech is a wake up call!
Davidson!

16:24 is the compassion practice that can positively require our brains if practiced for just 3-minutes daily ☺️😍🥰
The best thing i came accross today. I am so happy today. Literally so happy. Thanks UA-cam!!!!
This Ted Talk is gold! Highly recommend it to all of you beautiful souls
Shows you why prayer works. No one is listening, but it helps YOU feel better.. Maybe somehow, the energy from our mind/soul goes out to the world & makes some good changes eventually.
Jesus is listening
lol no this is not an anime
Of course Someone is listening. You need to be tuned in to receive the answer. Be patient.
@@stewartritchey7602 You can think that if you want to.
I don't know if Jesus or God is listening or not, but I do know many people I respect believed God was listening, examples Dr Martin l King Abraham Lincoln Deitrick Bonhoeffer Jimmy Carter Francis Collins mahute ghandi and John Kennedy.
I was so confused. you cleared this up for me because I haven't always practiced mindfulness. But, I do now. It's helping me to find peace. Thank you!
I meditate for 4 years now. It definitly changed my life. But mindfulness is not the miracle antidote to all of our society's problems.
I think wandering without awareness is the issue addressed here.

THANK YOU FOR SUCH ENLIGHTENING TALK MINDFULNESS 💚🤍♾️👏

Agreed. Let's start by less time on Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, TikTok...
Agreed, the comment sections on Reddit/youtube etc.. social media can be very toxic.
@@AW-ie5zs Addictive too.
exactly
It is why I stay off of Facebook and Twitter. The negativity is horrendous.
@@kimtemplin1330👍 Too easy to confuse truth with popularity.
Awareness, connection, insight and sense of purpose ❤ makes sense.
Thank you!
Keeping calm is what I try to be aware of everyday. I find it not always easy.
Tuyen Nguyen, Meditation is the permanent way to joy and a stress free life because it reprogrames the mind. Enter " Alternate nostril breathing meditation' videos on Google search and do the simple meditation for 10 minutes early morning and if possible at night. Several negative thoughts will come in your mind but they will slowly vanish with daily practice of the above meditation. Focus slightly on the incoming and outgoing breath as you do the above meditation which is life transforming. Best wishes--Shyaaam Sir--Life Coach
I appreciate the deliberate use of "her or his" as opposed to "his or her". Hes being mindful of how he speaks, rather than just going along with the general ubiquitous use of the phrase "his or her".
Yes, Be Still and Know that I am God. Old Testament:
people ask what does praying do and what does it change? It changes us, our sadness, our worry, our loneliness, our pain, and gives us peace. There is no 'downside' to belief and following God.
Amen
Amen I believe this very much so
prayer is meditation
I suffered from incapacitating anxiety and despondency for months on end. I prayed, my friends prayed, everybody prayed and it didn't do a Goddamn thing.
@@e.cornell3345 You need to define how you prayed, I do not mean what words were in your mind, I mean physically how did you prey ?
Because prayer has nothing to do with talking to an imaginary god !(that's actually you talking to yourself) ,that's the Roman slaver's version of how to pray (slavers lie)) .
Did you kneel ? bum on your ankles ? for like an hour ? Back held straight, arms held up straight, hands clasped together for an hour ? head tilted back look up all the time for an hour ? , if you did not do ALL of the list mentioned for an hour , then you sir have never prayed !
Many today would really struggle to hold that pose for 5 minutes let alone an hour
Give it a try. best outside looking at the Sky !
Words in your head are just like a song playing
Just listen to the song and don't judge it, Whilst in this pose
Stay here as long as you can, Reach the hour, nothing else is happening
Richard J. Davidson provides such insightful perspectives on the connection between mindfulness and emotional well-being. It's fascinating to see how science supports the transformative power of mindfulness in shaping our brain and emotional resilience. Thank you for sharing this enlightening talk!
Condensed knowledge of several books. Great talk. Probably the best of the lot I have listened to recently about meditation, mindfulness, reducing distractions. He bring together all topics into one cohesive discussion

I’m so touched by Dr Davidson’s eagerness to impart this knowledge. His gesture while speaking shows compassion, kindness and desire for happiness for everyone.
Happiness is a state of mind it doesn't depend on circumstances
Sir, Humanity will always Thank You for the remarkable work you have done!
