It’s not a literary comparison but there are a lot of parallels in Wano to Japanese culture and old samurai films by Akira Kurosawa that are very fun to see.
A comparison to Skypeia would also be fun, idk what to compare, I’m not well-versed in a lot of literature 😂

But to be fair to Togashi, He began working before Oda did and chunk out couple of series. The most well known is Yu Yu Hakusho and Level E before One Piece came to the scene. And he was able to keep up with One Piece release schedule in the beginning. Togashi almost had a decade of age differences over Oda afterall. For 99% of mangaka, getting just one big hit series is already quite an accomplishment. Togashi did a couple. Even if he retired now, he already better than the average mangaka in term of working effort. Between him and his wife, they already done enough for the manga industry. When I was going through Whole Cake Island, the parallels to Alice in Wonderland were undeniable. BUT I also saw a decent amount of lampooning of Disney.
Big Mom feels like a demented Walt Disney, creating a horrific world where she just wants happiness and song. It’s like experiencing “It’s a Small World”, there is something off about it, just like Totto Land.
Edit: Luffy’s joke “If you think that’s strange, look at us” is absolute gold.

I love Alice, my favorite book, and I'm always glad to see how elements from this story are used, inspired by such images. Truly a literary masterpiece, manga can always portray this "madness" in a cool way. One piece, although not perfect, like the author, really takes inspiration from such cool things, I hope that future mangaka will do the same and be inspired by masterpieces. It's always amazing how mangaka manage to look for material, get inspired and make such parodies and references and more. Yes, it will be healthy if, apart from Oda-Sensei, others do the same. I also noticed the atmosphere a la Romeo and Juliet in the arch. Thank you for the video! Хd

You gotta love the layered references. I haven't even GOTTEN to this arc yet, but just from hearing other people talk about it, you've got not just 'Alice in Wonderland', but 'Beauty and the Beast' (dancing food and utensils, and Sanji being, as one reviewer put it, basically a sad Disney princess), 'The Man in the Iron Mask'...and possibly even a nod to some of the baseline 'Journey to the West' inspiration with the two Luffys, because there is a scene in that epic where Monkey fights his own doppelganger and only the Buddha manages to tell them apart.

When Merphy mentioned how similar Sanji and Pudding's upbringing was, I realized for the first time how similar the 2 scenes were, when they were complimented on their trait that they were normally always ostracized for: Sanji complimenting her eye with no idea what the compliment means to her, and then Luffy hearing Judge list off Sanji's "weaknesses," and misunderstanding that those are Sanji's best traits. Each of them had grown up their whole life as "mutants/genetic freaks" who had this trait to them that they always viewed as a flaw, and then in this arc, it's literally the one feature about each other that both characters see and fall in love with- Sanji literally almost takes a bullet because of how mesmerized he is when he first sees her eye, and despite Pudding previously ridiculing Sanji behind his back, the second he reveals his kindness to her, she also falls for him. It's actually a crazy parallel, especially considering it was even established to be a genetic trait for each of them that coincidentally both of their mom's both desperately wanted them to have

I love both of this stories, and to me this is Oda's best show (aside from Wano and Japanese stories/traditions) of how he can take inspirations and make it completely his own, and it all fits so well together in his world and with his characters. It's just incredible how well the world of Alice and One Piece fits in one another, and to give Sanji his's so long waited moment, it's just fantastic.

Imo WCI is really underrated, I understand the slight bloat it has but besides that it's emotional impacts are up there with Water 7/Enies Lobby and Marineford imo. It's so outlandish yet feels believable within OP's power system. In a similar fashion to Water 7 and the Summit War saga the story derails and subverts the reader's expectations from the usual "Crackhead gets a McChicken and liberates the kingdom" format. Water 7 mainly with Robin being kidnapped, Ussop leaving, and Franky being a surprise ally. Summit War saga does this through the Strawhats defeat and it ending in optimistic tradgedy. And Whole Cake Island does this in the Tea Party going off the rails more than anyone expected, Luffy not even being able to fight the big bad of the arc, and in the strawhats only making it out alive, not winning and liberating the people of Tottoland. These arcs are great because they break the usual One Piece format, adding stakes that feel much more real than normal. The greatest dread I felt in the series were the crew falling apart in Water 7, the defeats in Sabaody and Marineford, and Big Mom racing after an utterly exhausted Straw Hat crew and allies, who had already given all they had just taking down her subordinates. To me the stakes felt higher in WCI than Wano going through for the first time, because while they're objectively higher in Wano, it follows the more traditional arc format, where we know Luffy is gonna fight Kaido and win. But WCI derails to such a degree that a repeat of Sabaody/Marineford felt very real throughout the arc, it's hard to know what's going to happen next in it. This is also a personal bias things but the musical numbers really aided in my emotional investment, I'm not much of a crier, especially over fiction, but the final number of WCI actually made me shed a single tear when Pudding was replaying the memories of her and Sanji kissing. If you read all that wow thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
P.S. no hate to wano was just using it as an example

I believe Nami being the main Straw Hat that accompanies Luffy throughout this arc is also super important, because she is also a child of severe trauma, and serves as a mirrored version of Big Mom. Nami is the kind of person Big Mom could’ve become if she had faced her trauma head on, worked on it, and if she had found people in her life who truly cared about her well being (Carmel and Streussen are users and abusers, neither truly loved or cared about Charlotte Linlin). You can see Nami’s mature and developed understanding of racism and inequality in Fishman island when she not only forgives Jimbei but also comes to an understanding that her abusers were abused too, and that she had been caught in a terrible cycle of abuse that she finally broke away from. Big Mom clearly has an immature understanding of racism and simply continues the cycle of abuse she endured with her own children. And then Nami ends up saving Zeus, arguably a “child” of Big Mom’s, and eventually comes to the conclusion that she can’t impose servitude on him like Big Mom (she tried), but rather than fear she uses respect and love, and Zeus agrees to be equal partners with her in the end. It’s all so so so good! Nami and Big Mom are my favorite characters because I relate to both and their struggles. Nami is ultimately my favorite because I look up to her so much.

  • @LemIgu5
    @LemIgu5 11 місяців тому

Something I love about the paralels Oda draw between Big Mom and Sanji is that Big Mom never had anyone who really cared about her. She had problems to control her own desires, but these problems were never treated the right way - Instead, what every person who seemed to care about her would do was abandon her or use her in their own benefit, like the nun or the cook who saw it. In the other side, we had Sanji, who grew in a very similar environment, but with a fundamental difference: He always had someone who cared about him. His mother, who taught him to grow empathy towards the world around him, her sister, who in a sort of a way put her own safety in risk to help him out that place and, later in life, Zeff, his real father, who molded him in what he is now. Essentialy, the story of Whole Cake and these two characters which are central to its narrative is the story of the importance of the people around a child in its self development and how the environment where they grow will fundamentally mold their personality

I think the most interesting detail is that you don't really have to work at Totland. You just pay the 1 month every 6 months. For reference- 2 months in a year is 1440 hrs while a typical full hour employee clocks in about 2000 hrs a year. Could go down as low as 1600 hours if you get extreme with day offs. Really plays into the fact that Big Mom was raised in terrible conditions, and is still something more of Chaotic Good. She's trying to make a utopia in her own twisted way. Like a child would not want to work, she would literally take work off her citizens shoulders.

This video has come at a great time for me because I’ve been thinking, these past few days, a lot about how a series I’m planning, as an aspiring writer, and how other works have similarities to certain parts of it, if that makes sense.
Even though I’ve yet to read any of these (I am familiar with the Alice story, of course, through the Disney movie (I was even in a play based on it at my old theatre school, hehe) but I haven’t got round to reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass, which I’ve actually had for a long time, so I’m thinking I should change that!), it’s really interesting to hear about the parallels the stories have. A lot of budding writers seem to be almost terrified of coming up with anything with a semblance of unoriginality but I think I’ve always been comfortable with embracing my inspirations and looking for ways existing works could enrich my stories, seeing how other writers, much more talented than me, portray themes and ideas I want to include too in hopes of having more of an idea of how to do so myself.

many people see Big Mom as a mostly one dimensional character that eventually becomes a mumbling fool when she is angry/hungry.
that isn't entirely false, but whoever seen/read Alice in Wonderland knows the reference to the queen of hearts and the many implications to Big Mom's condition and personality, and how it affects the entire story as well as the various ways it affects the immediete characters next to big mom, aka her kids.

Another thought I had... Alice in Wonderland was a heavy handed commentary and criticism of "new math" (this is one of those "death of the author" things where I just have to dismiss that since well.. new math turned out to be very useful and all of our modern tools use it), and Whole Cake island had a heavy criticism of misuse of science. It's a stretch, but Luffy stretches all the time so it's fine.

im very angry with myself that i thought so low about wholecake island. it has the best written yonko, best written damsel aka pudding imo, sanjis development story AND my favorite villain. like how the FUK did i not enjoy it as much? i probably was just soo focused on wanting a fight that i ignored all of this phenomenal writing. i remember just giving my sister the lore of big mom years ago and when i brought up big mom again recently she was like "oh yeah i remember her, her story was really sad and i liked her, she cant be blamed for how she grew up" fuk me got me tearing up. that a person that knows nothing about one piece was able to feel more for her in THAT ONE MOMENT I TOLD HER ABOUT, than me that has watched all the episodes with her. its like i take for granted that yes her personality can be used as a trope but these "tropes" are real views and peoples lifes and the idea that i see this type of trauma as a trope makes me feel like im over looknig someones actual life in general and that makes me sad

I really liked the video, especially when you connect the themes of the difficulties of growing up to Big Mom's twisted child-like personality. I have to say though...
There's one character in that arc who you did not mention at all who happens to be a young naive blond girl (like Alice), who begins this arc by uninvitedly following others to this tea party in wonderland (like Alice), who is the first one we see enter the mirror world (like Alice), who literally uses the word "Wonderland" twice at the beginning of the arc. That character also just happens to be a very fast, white rabbit, and a member of our main cast from start to finish.
It's a bit suspect for a ~19 min video so thorough about how Alice in Wonderland inspired Whole Cake Island to not have a single mention of the character who IS our Alice AND our White Rabbit in one (and arguably mentored by the Cheshire cat, Nekomamushi), Carrot.
And this is not just a neat reference that is missed. When you bring up the themes of growing up with Alice's struggles in Wonderland, that's pretty much exactly the whole of Carrot's character arc throughout Whole Cake Island, is it not? Starts out naive, adventurous and optimistic, even more so when first exploring this fantastical land, and then increasingly is met with the harsh realities of the world: strong and brutal enemies, complicated politics, a freaking mafia assassination plot, seeing her father figure and arguably most important person in her life literally explode in front of her eyes, and then having to suck it up and learn to deal with it emotionally while still having to perform her role to help the crew so they can just barely escape alive from an winnable conflict. Not paying attention to this character removes the connection of this theme of growing up to one of the most important moments in the entire arc: Pedro's sacrifice.

This sounds like you're accusing Merphy of purposefully not talking about Carrot. It's entirely possible that she just missed this one connection (even if it's a big one). I know it's possible to miss that because I missed it too. You really should not accuse anyone like that, it's very rude.

Whole Cake Island is pretty much my favorite arc in One Piece that is over 5 volumes long.
My favorite arc in all of One Piece is Syrup Village Arc. Syrup Village is GOAT.
Pedro is my favorite Honorary Straw Hat. He reminds me of Minwu from Final Fantasy 2. Yes, they are completely different characters but both of them join the party/crew, are total badasses
and then sacrifice themselves so that the party/crew can keep going. Minwu gives the party Ultima which thematically allows you to defeat the Emperor while Pedro sacrifices himself so
that the Straw Hats are not destroyed by Big Mom who is one of the four Emperors. So in that sense Minwu and Pedro got that same vibe.
I also love the Straw Hat and Fire Tank Crew alliance.
I am watching Wano and finished Act 1.
I like it and it's good but unless it gets WAAAAAAAAAY better I don't see it beating Whole Cake Island.
Wano has a ton of hype from the fandom but while I enjoy One Piece what I like about One Piece tends to be very different from most people.
    For example
    Thriller Bark >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Ennies Lobby
