As a citizen of a small Western country allied with the USA, I have been alarmed at polls indicating that Trump is leading. If he were to be elected president the effect upon the entire world would be catastrophic. I find Rachel's words comforting in the extreme. We've already seen Trump win an Election, in 2016, when he lost the Popular Vote by about 3m and mathematically he could potentially lose the Popular Vote in November by 4-5m and still have a "fighter's chance" to win the Electoral College and the Presidency. Everybody must vote!

Too many of our citizens keep letting perfection get in the way of good. There are so much more people in this country who are liberal and believe in democracy, compared to the MAGAs, but we continually shoot ourselves in the foot by not being united. Too many people take voting for granted or think they will make a statement if they vote for a third party that has zero chance at winning. It's beyond frustrating. If people really want legit third parties, how about sponsoring a third-party candidate in down ballot races where numerous MAGA Republicans run unopposed. But nobody ever thinks to do that. It's always got to be a third-party ticket for a presidential, which can do the most damage by siphoning away votes.

Hi Canada ! I love your country and wished i would have stayed there when it was easier to immigrate .. It depends on where in the US . Here in the Bay Area ( especially where i live in the Berkeley/ Oakland area ) My community is VERY aware of what could happen It is VERY scary . This is why my conservative Christian non-political parents get so confused and frustrated when I try to explain all of the propaganda talking points that they believe, and they cant understand why I bring up totally different topics during a discussion about one topic, nor do they understand why they matter as a whole. It's so exasperating. Because they aren't inherently stupid, just uninformed, misinformed, and stuck in the old ways of Southern Baptist that they were born and raised in. I was polled by phone a week ago for the first time ever as a registered voter. The questions started out my age, occupation, do I vote, how often I vote, will I be voting, then asking about Biden vs. Trump. I basically told the pollster I would not vote for Trump under any circumstances. Then some questions about inflation and the economy, the border, Russia/Ukraine, Israel/Palestine, but oddly nothing at all about Trump's election denial, lawsuits, Jan. 6th, etc. as if they were not even relevent issues. Then he went on to questions about whether I will likely be voting for Sherrod Brown (I'm in Ohio) and I said yes. There seemed to be a lot of framing around how various dumb right-wing talking points would affect my decision on whether I would vote for him, such as if he were to vote to pass laws in support of abortion "up until birth", and transgenders in women's sports, then would I reconsider? It all seemed really right-wing culture war biased as if to insinuate that those are the more relevent issues to be concerned with. No mention at all about healthcare, prescription drugs, social security, student loan debt or any of that.

I don’t think the electoral college should be totally abandoned, but it definitely needs a massive overhaul. I fear that if it were to go away, a lot of fly over states would not want to be part of the United States anymore. We’ve already been down that path. And the gerrymandering needs to be fixed asap.

I agree but Gerrymandering doesn't have much to do with the Electoral College, they're separate issues. Most states determine who their votes go to by winning a plurality of votes for the whole state. Though the number of votes for each state is determined by the number of congressional districts + 2 for senators, the gerrymandered districts don't change the electoral college vote.

Especially now in the modern era. The people who are polled are those that still have land lines. Most people I know under the age of 40 (Including several financially well off individuals and their families) don't even have land lines. The people who have land lines tend to be the elderly, and they historically have tended to vote one way over the other.

Same here. Third parties always want to get on the presidential ballot when they have no chance in hell of winning, and a very good chance of siphoning off votes. Not to mention, do they not understand that they will not have any type of congressional help, since Democrats and Republicans will have all the seats? If third parties, like No Labels, really wanted to make an impact, sponsor some candidates for lower-tier races in state elections, where a lot of Republicans run unopposed. Build out that way to show that they can be legitimate party.

It’s like my hobby and I follow it closely I’m sure I know more than 90% of Americans I guess it’s part of the fascination. Let me give you some help. I am 62. I went to high school in the 1970s. Civics wasn't taught in school then. Civics would have to have been considered important before the 1970s.
71 year old here....Civics required all through school. American History every year. English every quarter. I graduated HS in 1971 and was a pretty well educated citizen and well prepared for college. I can spell too!

Being a rather precocious, science oriented student, I was pretty sure this would not work in the event of a nuclear accident or attack, but hey, I was 10. The school system there was very progressive and I loved it, but my Mom hated the desert so we only stayed one year. I am not sure exactly when or why the educational system in the U.S. lost its way, but I know I am grateful for the excellence of my own public school experience. I consider myself a life long learner and my early education gave me the tools to pursue almost any area of interest and come away with a good base of knowledge. To say this has enhanced my life immeasurably is an understatement. But to get back to the whole point of this thread.....learning and understanding are foundational tasks in human brains, without this we cannot properly or accurately assess or comprehend anything, including current political or world events. GOOD EDUCATION IS ESSENTIAL TO AN INFORMED CITIZENRY. Our founders knew this long ago and we need to get back to excellence in public schools.

I've been told that I'm the first person who isn't worried about Trump winning. He's a loser and will be either unlalive, hospitalized or out of the country (if not in custody) by November.

I'm worried about it because someone in 2016 promised me he would never win, and he did. I didn't think January 6th would ever happen - and it did. I didn't think one person would ever choose a new national anthem - and that happened. Bernie also campaigned for Hillary & urged his supporters to vote for her despite their anger & frustration over the primary. Hillary didn’t do enough for herself to get elected, and this is nowhere more evident than the midwestern & Great Lakes states she completely failed to even visit that she ended up losing (flipping blue to red). Her campaign even internally referred to them as “fly-over” states. It’s baffling that, after having to essentially change DNC convention rules to stave off a hugely popular primary candidate with an arguably populist campaign in Bernie, that her strategists thought it wise to essentially write off the voters of entire states by not even setting foot in them once. These were states crucial to the electoral math needed for victory too. To this day, I don’t understand their thinking. That said, the only people really responsible for Trump’s 2016 victory are the folks that voted for him. Period. I was polled by phone a week ago for the first time ever as a registered voter. The questions started out my age, occupation, do I vote, how often I vote, will I be voting, then asking about Biden vs. Trump. I basically told the pollster I would not vote for Trump under any circumstances. Then some questions about inflation and the economy, the border, Russia/Ukraine, Israel/Palestine, but oddly nothing at all about Trump's election denial, lawsuits, Jan. 6th, etc. as if they were not even relevent issues. Then he went on to questions about whether I will likely be voting for Sherrod Brown (I'm in Ohio) and I said yes. There seemed to be a lot of framing around how various dumb right-wing talking points would affect my decision on whether I would vote for him, such as if he were to vote to pass laws in support of abortion "up until birth", and transgenders in women's sports, then would I reconsider? It all seemed really right-wing culture war biased as if to insinuate that those are the more relevent issues to be concerned with. No mention at all about healthcare, prescription drugs, social security, student loan debt or any of that.

This undemocratic Electoral College should be abandoned, particularly when Electoral Districts are jerrymandered with ease, and appeal processes are so obviously mishandled by the USSC.
You are right we have communication , and travel abilities , never dreamt of , when the Constitution was written, and there had to be accommodations made for the lack of travel and communication difficulties , that took TIME .
I don’t think the electoral college should be totally abandoned, but it definitely needs a massive overhaul. I fear that if it were to go away, a lot of fly over states would not want to be part of the United States anymore. We’ve already been down that path. And the gerrymandering needs to be fixed asap.

I agree but Gerrymandering doesn't have much to do with the Electoral College, they're separate issues. Most states determine who their votes go to by winning a plurality of votes for the whole state. Though the number of votes for each state is determined by the number of congressional districts + 2 for senators, the gerrymandered districts don't change the electoral college vote.

I knew a pollster who quit because he realized how inaccurate polls were, he figured he was just wasting his life. The only poll that matters is the official vote.
Polls may not be all that accurate but still give hint as to which direction things are or may be going.
Especially now in the modern era. The people who are polled are those that still have land lines. Most people I know under the age of 40 (Including several financially well off individuals and their families) don't even have land lines. The people who have land lines tend to be the elderly, and they historically have tended to vote one way over the other.

Polls say that Trump will win the 18-35 age group by four points. That 11% of voters are undecided between Biden and Trump. Biden and Trump, really? That the border is the number two voting issue and that women's reproductive rights or democracy are not in the top ten. Does this pass the smell test to you? Sometimes when things don't appear to make sense, that is because they don't. A poll involves somebody talking politics for a full half hour with a complete stranger on the phone. Do you really believe that more moderate people are going to take time out of their day to do that? The biggest voting block in this country is severely underrepresented in the polls. The silent majority. Until they are, polls aren't worth the paper they are written on.
If you never vote again in your lifetime is fine, as long as you register and vote in this coming presidential election. ***never before has this been as important an election than now, in my 62 years*** your life matters and we need everyone's vote to preserve what we are and what we represent for ourselves and our future generations. Same here. Third parties always want to get on the presidential ballot when they have no chance in hell of winning, and a very good chance of siphoning off votes. Not to mention, do they not understand that they will not have any type of congressional help, since Democrats and Republicans will have all the seats? If third parties, like No Labels, really wanted to make an impact, sponsor some candidates for lower-tier races in state elections, where a lot of Republicans run unopposed. Build out that way to show that they can be legitimate party.
Leaders should be selected from the qualified in the party, not from the ones willing to run. The party elders used to prevent these gaffes

I am a history major with a political science minor. In particular, I would be interested in knowing. Exactly when were history and civics considered important in our education system? Let me give you some help. I am 62. I went to high school in the 1970s. Civics wasn't taught in school then. Civics would have to have been considered important before the 1970s.
71 year old here....Civics required all through school. American History every year. English every quarter. I graduated HS in 1971 and was a pretty well educated citizen and well prepared for college. I can spell too!

Being a rather precocious, science oriented student, I was pretty sure this would not work in the event of a nuclear accident or attack, but hey, I was 10. The school system there was very progressive and I loved it, but my Mom hated the desert so we only stayed one year. I am not sure exactly when or why the educational system in the U.S. lost its way, but I know I am grateful for the excellence of my own public school experience. I consider myself a life long learner and my early education gave me the tools to pursue almost any area of interest and come away with a good base of knowledge. To say this has enhanced my life immeasurably is an understatement. But to get back to the whole point of this thread.....learning and understanding are foundational tasks in human brains, without this we cannot properly or accurately assess or comprehend anything, including current political or world events. GOOD EDUCATION IS ESSENTIAL TO AN INFORMED CITIZENRY. Our founders knew this long ago and we need to get back to excellence in public schools.

I'm worried about it because someone in 2016 promised me he would never win, and he did. I didn't think January 6th would ever happen - and it did. I didn't think one person would ever choose a new national anthem - and that happened. Something I just read about voting in Ohio. Biden can POSSIBLEY be left OFF their ballot because of their deadline for candidates to be listed or certified and when the Democrats have their convention. Biden won't be their OFFICIAL candidate unit after Ohio's final date.
They have two choices, per Ohio Secretary of State, move the convention date or approach the Ohio legislature to change the date OR allow the Democrats to be late. So, when talking about voting and who is going to vote and polls, THIS IS meaningful.

I will do more to work with our political candidates in North Carolina, hopefully counteracting the extreme gerrymandering under which we have been placed. Bernie **did** endorse Hillary, after she accepted the nomination at the DNC convention. Bernie also campaigned for Hillary & urged his supporters to vote for her despite their anger & frustration over the primary.
This narrative that Bernie’s campaign was responsible for Trump, or that he didn’t do enough to get Hillary elected needs to end. Hillary didn’t do enough for herself to get elected, and this is nowhere more evident than the midwestern & Great Lakes states she completely failed to even visit that she ended up losing (flipping blue to red). Her campaign even internally referred to them as “fly-over” states. It’s baffling that, after having to essentially change DNC convention rules to stave off a hugely popular primary candidate with an arguably populist campaign in Bernie, that her strategists thought it wise to essentially write off the voters of entire states by not even setting foot in them once. These were states crucial to the electoral math needed for victory too. To this day, I don’t understand their thinking.
That said, the only people really responsible for Trump’s 2016 victory are the folks that voted for him. Period. The man-baby couldn’t have won if no one voted for him, and it’s a mark of shame on our nation that he even got 1 ballot.
