    Hi, do I need to soak the banana leaf in water before I use it? Or just wash it with water will do?

      Give it a wash and run it briefly over an open flame to make it soft and flexible, otherwise it may crack when folding..

      Suman is a rice cake originating in the Philippines. It is made from glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk, often wrapped in banana leaves or buli or buri palm (Corypha) leaves for steaming. In Indonesia that is called lupis (sweet dish). Burasa or buras is a type of rice dumpling cooked with coconut milk packed inside a banana leaf pouch. It is a delicacy of the Bugis and Makassar people of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and often consumed as a staple to replace steamed rice or ketupat. It is similar to lontong, but with richer flavour acquired from coconut milk.

    What is long grain rice? is it glutinous rice, Jasmne rice or Basmati Rice ?

    My aunts were telling me how if it was made this way it is much more fragrant than the way that a lot of people make it now, which is with plastic bags.
    How much do you fill up each of the banana leave cylinders? halfway? two thirds?

    • @Seasaltwithfood
      @Seasaltwithfood  8 років тому

      I filled about 1/3, you can add slightly more (up to 1/2) for firmer lontong rice.

    Now if only I could find some banana leaves in my neck of the woods! Is there any kind of substitute?

    • @Seasaltwithfood
      @Seasaltwithfood  9 років тому

      fordhouse8b How about frozen banana leaves? There are couple other method to make the rice cakes without the leaf but it won't taste the same. I'll try to make a video soon.
