Jay Metcalf from @bettersax plays an alto sax solo with his Better Sax alto and Jody Jazz Jet 7 mouthpiece.
Weird.. I was flipping thru the TV channels last night and came across the movie "Mo Better Blues" right in middle of the movie. I haven't seen this flick in over 30 years...but remember the good music. Interesting seeing a young Denzel Washington.. Wesley Snipes.. and Samuel Jackson.. When the night club scene with this song came on..I had to pause..back it up.. and bust out my tenor and play along. Thanks Jay!!
Hi Jay. I began playing the alto sax 4 years ago I was so proud of myself when I was finally able to play a very simple blues line which you posted. As a music teacher (piano) I was so taken by your teaching skills. Jay they were and are just the best. Your whole demeanor and way of communicating with the pupil is something that cannot be taught and so unique and special. You have it in spades.
Your posts have helped me more than you can ever know and I just love playing along as best I can. Mo more Blues has consumed me for the past month and It is by far the most difficult piece that I have almost learned ! My musician friends were simply blown away by your relaxed style and skill. Thank you again for teaching me so much.

Recently I have attended a concert and I heard a UK band playing this song. They all play like the original Branford Marsalis version but unimpressively so. Jay, your version of this song is the BEST I have ever heard. I like your Bebop phrasing on it. Those phrases just give a a punch and a new SPIRIT. I just wished you transcribed your solo for us. I'm slowly trying my best to transcribe your solo. Thanks.

Thanks! I'm changing mouthpieces all the time to be trying out new stuff. Today I played the Jody Jazz Jet 7 for this recording.
It sounds good but Jody jazz jet 7 is kind of bright to me.

What does turning ones head to the right to breath achieve ?
Jay, I truly love this song. I've learned to play it up until you get into the sixteenth notes. I am assuming after the verses, this is your own solo version. I am determined to learn this song. I think I need to buy the Vdami peddle so I can repeat it over and over without having to manipulate my mouse.
If you are using UA-cam to learn it try using keyboard shortcuts. Also you can change the playback speed.

Jay, you're playing way to many notes ...where's the space? ..... just kidding ... sounds awesome ... this track is different from the one I already have that faster but I like the this one better .. slower and more blues like ....

Drum part is weak. Should be just a hair faster and snare higher pitched (tighter). Doesn’t have any drive to it.
