Just FYI, this started with an a capella phone recording of the first verse by Yebba which he later harmonized a capella and THEN added Legend and Kelly for the recording on DJesse Vol 4. For this live performance he re-creates the Yebba (who wasn't there) portion using his voice and the harmonizer developed for him at MIT. There's also a video of them recording Tori's portion at her home where Jacob teaches her some of the runs which she enhances further in this live performance. Other songs to check out first: All Night Long, Moon River, Little Blue (Mahogany Sessions), Wild Mountain Thyme (with Dodi and Laufey and the NSO) on PBS where you see a real audience choir. Hideaway, All I Need and Don't You Know with Snarky Puppy are also excellent. In fact, Dodi, Laufey and Snarky Puppy are all worth reacting to on their own.
i fully concur with BryanLeggo. That is a 1 of 1 keyboard he developed with someone from MIT media dept. The ‘glide’ feature is a software update from the original setup. There is so much depth to the knowledge and creativity of Jacob Collier i personally find it almost frightening. i would also endorse reacting to JC’s cover of “Moon River”, truly a magnum opus. When you do, see how many luminaries you can pick out from the intro singing the word ‘moon’, which Jacob took the assorted audio files and creates a kind of sound sculpture … an incredible feat.
Nice reaction. My ultimate Jacob experience is his "You Don't Know" jam with Snarky Puppy band. Or, maybe the live Mahogany Session of his "Little Blue". Or, his audience choir in Vienna...
Well, my friend, I'm so happy you finally got to this performance. To tell you the truth, when you mentioned you'd be doing this a few weeks ago, I had to go back into my history to see what song you were talking about. LOL Thank you for sharing this with your audience. It is such a different rendition, and I love what these performers did with it. I hope others love it also.
I enjoyed your reaction. I think you have good opinions about not listening to it in repeat in the car.. but you’re not doing yourself any favors by making comments like “the emotion would be lost if you just listen to the music”.. this is JC, John Legend, and Tori Kelly (and Yebba on the studio version) that we’re talking about.. to even suggest that group couldn’t get emotion into an audio performance is a bit silly.
