  • I've recently completed a light restoration on my #antique #sewingmachine, and it's ready to sew for the first time in many years! Take a look at this 1910 National Paveway #treadle sewing machine, and learn a bit about its history and how to use it. You'll also see how I cleaned a century of grease and grime from this machine and uncovered some gorgeous decals.
    You can see another video about a Paveway machine here: • Antique National Pavew... ---- If you love antique sewing machines, ‪@wayneschmidt490‬ is an incredible resource. Seriously - go subscribe to his channel.
    I purchased all of the cleaning and polishing products shown in this video on Amazon. I used sandpaper that ranged from 120 to 3000 grit, and 0000 steel wool. With both the sandpaper and the steel wool, I used ordinary sewing machine oil as a lubricant. I did a final polish of the unpainted metal parts with Simichrome metal polish, and I used a little sewing machine oil on a rag to do a final polish of the painted and decaled portions of the machine. The oil will help prevent chipped areas from rusting or rusting more in the future.
    This is the first in a series all about cleaning and using some antique sewing machines from my collection, so be sure to subscribe so you don't miss a thing! There will be at least 4 more videos in this series.
    Also, you can stay up to date with this channel between videos by following me on Instagram @crmarble.

    This is an absolutely STUNNING machine! I love the philosophy of not clearing all of the patina, but just enough that it shines through. Scars tell a story, and this one's is absolutely beautiful, thank you so much for sharing!

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I love the look of old machines - it's the feeling of touching history and connecting somehow with the people who used them before me. It makes me sad when people strip them down and repaint them. Sometimes you have to, of course, when they are in really bad shape. But a machine like this has a lot of beauty as is! Wait until you see the next video in this series, where I bring a 1901 machine back to life. It was much dirtier, but now it's even more beautiful than this one.

    I have my 3rd great grannies 1874 Domestic brand coffin top treadle. I wish I could find new decals (if it ever had any, no one seems to know), the machine was used by every generation after, until, my paternal grandad, well, because he didnt have time to sew. My dad only had two brothers so I inherited it. I also have my grandmothers (dads mom) 1921 Singer treadle. My father also has his great aunts 1903 Singer treadle. Mine are in great shape, the 1874 was refinished by my second great uncle in the 50s. My grannies treadle had been painted white in the 40s, (before granny inherited it) so my pop and i stripped that yellowing flaky crap off in 2016 and refinished it to the original style chocolaty brown. The 1903 is in desperate need of refinishing, but that was the treadle my dad used to teach me to sew when I was a kid. My dad will likely tackle that refinish in the next couple of years, now that he is retired.

      I love old sewing machines and seem to have developed an addiction to collecting and servicing them. Since I posted my sewing machine collection video, I've added four to the pile, mostly to learn about servicing and restoration. I've joined the Vintage Sewing Machine group on Facebook, and there is a wealth of knowledge there. If there is a place to buy those Domestic decals, they will know about it! You should join the group and ask.

      Hi! I'm still here! In fact, one of my older videos took off like a rocket over the past few weeks and I've spent all morning replying to comments! :-) We hit a rough patch in life, what with losing a few family members, having to help aging parents, losing our precious dog, getting a high school senior through college applications and testing, and breaking my foot, then needing surgery and having complications from it that kept me off my feet for 8+ weeks. But things are looking up and I hope to make new videos soon. Thanks for watching and commenting! And thanks for your patience!

    I have a 1917 White Rotary treadle machine and learning the cadence of pedaling the machine was easy. What was/is difficult is that just about everything on it is compltely opposite of all my other machines. The hand wheel turns away from me, but on my Singer Featherweight and my modrrn mechanical machine, the hand wheel turns toward me. My modern machine is threaded front to back, Featherweight is right to left, and the White is threaded from left to right. So many things to remember!

      Each machine seems to have its own unique personality! I now have a 1901 New Home treadle, and while it threads and operates the same as the Paveway, it just feels different while in use. I really love that about old machines. I have decided to keep notes with each machine (I have several now) that shares the interesting bits so I can remind myself when I use them, but also so that if I pass one on the next person will know more than I did when I got it.

    I have a 1900(early?) Treadle machine. No number located, Grand Damascus...possibly made by Eldridge; before 1920, I think.
    I have only cleaned it with sewing machine oil. I have the belt to put on it; just haven't made it my priority, yet. I was able to only pay $75.00, no extra feet, round bobbin...
    I do have an electric 1919 Singer portable machine with the bullet shuttle. I found it difficult to find the correct length bobbins, apparently here are many lengths out there.
    I mostly used in the 1960's, to make my clothes in high-school & repair jeans for a quarter apiece, in college... that was the thing, back in 1969-1971.
    I found that I thoroughly enjoy hand quilting, after piecing on my electric Husqvarna...
    Thanks for your information.
    Where does one buy the regular Gojo...is it at an auto store, or in a big box store, in the auto section? All I get @ the auto section is the green windshield washer fluid, that keeps bugs (& pine tree sap) off of my car windows.
    I am currently in Northern California, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

      I've seen the Damascus machines online but never in person. Some of these old badged machines can be few and far between, making it hard to find stuff for them. I have bought several antique bobbins and bullet shuttles for my other machines without any issue, so maybe I just got lucky? I didn't know there were different sizes! I bought the Gojo and other cleaning supplies on Amazon. I'm not sure where else to look for it. Thanks for watching!

    Thank you so much for this video. I have a National Improved Melville. There isn't any serial number we could find so we don't know the year which I think is older than 1910ish. Your machine is almost identical. It was very much used but still works. It just needed cleaning up. However, the top spool pin is missing and a couple of other parts for bobbin winding. Do you know where we can get parts?

    • @ColleenMarble
      @ColleenMarble  6 місяців тому

      Hi, thanks for watching and commenting! I am not sure where to get parts for this machine, but I know where you may be able to find out. There is an amazing group on Facebook called Vintage Sewing Machines. The folks in that group are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and they should be able to point you in the right direction, either for where to find the exact parts or perhaps which machines use identical parts. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a whole machine for parts than it is to buy the part itself.

    Hi Colleen! This is such a great helpful video, thank you so much! I have exactly the same machine, but it is missing a few parts (the tension plate, for example). Do you happen to know where is a good place online to look for parts? Also, if I find a plate from another brand of machine but the same era, do you think that would work in the machine? Thanks in advance for any info!

      The best bet is to look on Ebay for parts. This is a National sewing machine, so it will be similar or even identical to many other National machines badged with private labels. A list of those labels can be found here: needlebar.org/main/makers/usa/national/index.html. Also, you may be able to find a machine on Craigslist or Marketplace to use for parts. Whole machines are often available for less than the cost of the individual parts. Another great resource is the Vintage Sewing Machines group on Facebook. The folks in that group are very knowledgeable and are happy to answer questions. I hope that helps!

    I just received my great grandmother's 1908 New Home in the cabinet. It's in great condition but the cable for the auto lift is gone. I see where it attaches to the top but can't figure how it does below before the cable runs over the pulley and how the machine stayes up. Any advise or help would be great. Thanks!

      Great! I hope it will show how the machine lowers and raises out of the cabinet and what keeps it up. I found a small cast part that looks like it turns to hold something. Any help would be most appreciated. Sounds like you are getting back on your feet.
      Thank you, I'm really excited to get it running. It's in great condition other than the cable.

    I've got a *very* similar National Sewing Machine Co. machine albeit R. H. Macy & Co. Brand. However, mine is missing the flat tension attachment up top. Two questions:
    (1) Would you know where to order or find a replacement? What should I be searching for? And (2), on the bobbin winder, how is the spring installed so that the thread holder engages with the heart-shaped gear? After cleaning, I don't know how to reinstall the spring there. Thank you for reading and any help you might be able to provide.

    • @ColleenMarble
      @ColleenMarble  2 місяці тому

      I'm sorry for the delay in my response. For question one - National made machines under so many different names but with basically identical parts. Honestly, it would be cheaper to get an old machine locally that you can use for parts than to buy just the assembly on eBay. But parts do show up online. Search for "antique treadle sewing machine thread tension assembly" -- there are some on ebay now but they may not be right for your machine. Regarding your second question - I didn't disassemble the actual bobbin winder. I took the assembly off the machine and cleaned it but I didn't take the assembly all the way apart.

    • @ColleenMarble

      I'm afraid I can't advise without seeing it, but it's probably just seized up and needs sewing machine oil and time to loosen it. There is a fantastic group on Facebook called Vintage Sewing Machines. If you join and ask them, they will be thrilled to help you. I have learned so much about restoring my vintage machines from members in that group. You can also search posts to see what other people have done. It's a wonderful, knowledgable community.

I corroborated information found elsewhere over the years with additional info found on UA-cam, and I consulted a second antique sewing machine specialist just a few months ago, actually, because they posted about a Paveway in their collection. I did a ton of research on this machine, and if other information is out there, I sure couldn't find it. Can you share your sources? I'm always open to correcting my info if I get something wrong.
