I Made My First Robe a la Francaise! | Part 1: The Petticoat
When people think of 18th century fashion, they often picture one of the elaborate gowns that Marie Antoinette herself would have worn to a ball. The robe a la francaise is just such a gown. It's lavish, and it's meant to impress!
I finally had a reason to make my own robe a la francaise (also known as a sack back or sacque gown). I attended the St. Louis Historical Sewing Society's 18th century ball last October. The Fêtes Historiques de St. Louis was a wonderful evening, and I'm so glad I was able to attend.
I had several months' advance notice, but life got in the way, and I ended up making my gown in the last few weeks before the event. This series of videos will show you how I made it!
I relied heavily on The American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dressmaking by Lauren Stowell and Abby Cox, and Patterns of Fashion (books 1 and 6) by Janet Arnold and The School of Historical Dress. If you are interested in historical sewing, these books (among others) are invaluable resources.

    After dragging around my grandmas 1938 Singer 15-88 treadle for the last 40 years because it's just kinda cool as an antique, I oiled it up and started using it with its original cracked leather belt. One thing I have found is that is not easy going slow as you can end up going backwards very easily using the treadle. So on starting and initial backstitching you always start it by hand. Thankfully it has a spoked wheel and I end up just using one finger in the spokes to go slow. Not sure how adding a hand crank would affect the treadle usage, which can really fly during straight runs. Also found an extra washer in the tensioner, must have been my grandpa, but it didn't release tension when the foot was lifted. It is a beast though.

    • @ColleenMarble
      @ColleenMarble 18 днів тому

      Sounds like a great machine! Treadle belts are easy to buy and replace, so you may give that a try if you plan to use your machine a lot! A spoked wheel treadle can easily be converted if you can find a crank to fit. That's because they are designed to make several stitches with each turn of the wheel. My electric machine was not, so it's slow going for sure when one turn only produces one stitch. I did eventually get the machine from this video restored with new wiring and it's working great again. I have since bought another Singer that has its original hand crank and it sews beautifully.

    I bought a hem marker and a set of antique sewing machine feet in a beautiful velvet box on eBay a number of years ago. They packed the small container of chalk with it. The package was delayed and I waited a couple of weeks for it. When it arrived the package had be ripped apart. Customs had thought the “white” substance wasn’t chalk. They destroyed the velvet box looking for more drugs and I was heart broken that the box had been destroyed. Lesson learned.

    • @ColleenMarble
      @ColleenMarble 27 днів тому

  • @carolyng5235
    @carolyng5235 28 днів тому

    This gown turned out beautifully! I have always been intimidated to make something with all of the fancy embellishments, but your way of breaking it down step by step makes it understandable. I have used both a Simplicity American Duchess pattern (different one) and the book, and agree the book is much better. As I understand it, after historical costumers submit their designs and patterns to one of the big commercial companies, it is out of their hands, and the patterns and construction methods are often "modernized" with very strange construction methods (to me) and poor instructions and sizing. Looking forward to part two!

    • @ColleenMarble
      @ColleenMarble 28 днів тому

      Oh I'm glad the video helped understand what's going on. I've always been intimidated too. It's scary to cut into fabric if you don't 10000% know what you're doing, but the books and doing mockups made it much easier. And yes, I've heard that too about the loss of control once designers submit their work. Now that I've used Patterns of Fashion a few times, I don't think I'll buy another historical pattern by the big makers (McCall's, Simplicity, Vogue, etc.). I know there are very good multi-size patterns by independent designers (in particular, Scroop Patterns, but there are others), so I'll go that route if I want to buy again.

    Good quality vintage scissors are fantastic BUT they can only be sharpened so many times before they cannot be sharpened again because very time you have them sharpened you loose some metal off the blades. Good quality pinking sheers can often be sharpened but you will need to pay by the "tooth" ( every peak/valley).Old thread, yes can be brittle but it can be used for basting and making pattern markings

    • @ColleenMarble
      @ColleenMarble 28 днів тому

      True but it would take a LOT of years I think for it to really damage the blades beyond repair. And yeah, I've heard of some places charging by the tooth for pinking shears. I'm glad the place I go doesn't! It's $5 to sharpen scissors, and I don't think it was much more for the pinking shears. Very affordable to sharpen my stuff there!

    Thanks for sharing the vintage sewing tools. I have been sewing since the seventh grade, and I own many of the tools that you shared. I don’t sew garments much at this time because I am an avid quilter. The information on the Wiss shears is especially useful. I have a pair that belonged ❤to my mother, so I will have them sharpened.

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I love using items that belonged to my relatives. I wish I had my other grandmother's sewing things, but she stopped sewing years before she passed, which was years before I started sewing. I'm sure she got rid of everything when her eyesight started failing.

    I found a lot of vintage notions in an antique sewing machine. Including a wooden darning foot.

    New subscriber here - this is the first and only (so far) video of yours I've watched. Several of the items you show I have from my mother's sewing stock, and even some of my own from when I started sewing in high school nearly 50 years ago. I appreciate your straight-forward, clear and concise narrative and presentation. Thank you.

    I have that exact needle case with a few used and unused needles in it. I bought it new but went for years without sewing. I hate it when my regular supplies are now vintage and almost antique. 😅 I can’t believe it, but I’m almost antique myself…I’ll be 88 next month!

    Well. That was great, except now I'm on a mission to find that chalk pin marker set 😠 😆 My favorite vintage tool is a set of aluminum clothespins, that you pinch at the short end, and the long end holds your fabric. They're very flat, and there are little ruler marks on them, in half inch increments, so your hemming is even. Great for slippery fabrics, too

    • @ColleenMarble
      @ColleenMarble Місяць тому

      Oh yes, I have a set of those clips too. They are really handy to use! Thanks for watching, and happy hunting for your chalk pin marker!

    True about the thread, with one exception: when doing repairs on old fragile textiles, conservators need the repair to be weaker than the original being repaired. Otherwise the repair itself will cause the old textile to further decompose and tear. Thread that breaks easily but will function well enough to allow for hand stitched repairs is perfect for conservation work. I keep a tin of all colors for this specialized work. Great video!

      @ColleenMarble Місяць тому

      Oh that's fascinating! I would love to shadow a textile conservator for a day (or more) because I think I'd really enjoy that type of work. How neat that you get to to do that!
