Sylvia Mendez - 2018 National Hispanic Hero Award

On February 17, USHLI awarded Sylvia Mendez the National Hispanic Hero Award.
Sylvia Mendez is an American civil rights activist of Mexican-Puerto Rican heritage. At age eight, she played an instrumental role in the Mendez v. Westminster case, the landmark desegregation case of 1946.

Thank you Sylvia, thanks to the bravery like that of your family’s, we live a better life. It upsets me I was never taught about you in school. Matter of fact, it’s like Hispanics have zero history here bcz we were never taught anything about Hispanics.
