Sounds stupid but in some way this happens at some point for most addicted gamblers. One day you lost so much money to gambling that even winning a big chunk wouldn't be enough to break even. Not talking about power ball lottery or some sort. But roulette and slots for example. As soon you chase the loss its very dangoures. Golden rules are: always only gamble the amount you comfortable to loose(have a limit ) . Don't chase your losses. There are no sure bets.

But I can say that I'm 6 years clean, and although I lost my wife and daughter (i have my daughter 50%, thank god)...something money could never buy...I feel happy that I am no longer a slave to pharmaceutical opioids.

I am now at a low point in my life due to many things including gambling. I am watching this episode again as a way to give myself the strength for one last try to make things right.

Oh my God my heart breaks for that Man. I started to cry when he was showing the empty room where his family use to be. I was a drug addict for 10 years. I lost almost everyone and everything. Everyday I said it was my last time. 10 years later and my past is all a blur. I finally got help and got clean. but it’s still a constant battle in my mind, being reminded of everything I lost and everything I could have accomplished. I feel for this man because that addictive mindset is hell on earth. It doesn’t matter if it’s gambling, drugs, alcohol, or money. It will consume every part of you and your life, until you’re completely broken.
I hope he is still doing ok today 💜

Incorrect, most winners play consistently & only use the same numbers. Unfortunately, 90% of winners lose it all inside 5 years. Gambling responsibly is having a monthly budget, an amount you can comfortably afford to lose. You will be losing more than winning, that's how the government stays rich.

No one is perfect, and even though I would never get into a situation this bad, (I hope) I try not to judge, because I've done some really stupid things too. I don't understand how anyone could throw away their hard earned money on gambling. I've went to casinos and feel super guilty if I just spend 20.00 would much rather spend my money on things I can use later and not just a second cheap thrill.

Its very hard to put yourself in an addicts shoes. He had a diagnosable and severe case of addiction. In other words, the physical workings of his brain were operating differently then you and mine. Addiction is a hard thing to get over with no support.

They have a delusion that they will win. Just like those crazy law of attraction people who are super annoying and they believe everything is awesome when their lives are really shit and falling apart all around them but they ignore it because "you always gotta think positive voodoo" also a normal person gets a little high from playing. The addicts brain releases so much more chemicals they get super high when they play. Like cocaine. So they are really addicted to their own chemistry and are paying for their drug like any other addict. There was an interesting study where they hooked machines up to animals brains which released the same chemicals in the reward center of the brain. Then they trained the animals to push a button anytime they wanted to feel that feeling. All of the animals after a few weeks stopped eating all together and continued to press the button over and over. They would have rather died and not eat just to keep pressing the button.
