      @Timothy Lee these videos are not for beginners. Please at the least, if you are a beginner get live! Video instruction..better yet a real teacher in person. Yes its expensive. But honestly, if you want to learn a string familily instrument, a real teacher is essential..

    There are young children that come to these sites to learn from these professional musicians because they have a big interest in music and many can not afford a teacher or lessons. It's mixed company. Please keep your comments civil and without profanity. Tyvm

    • @dogbyte95
      @dogbyte95 9 років тому +7

      SHADOWMAN296 well, this doesn't show u how 2 play the violin, more than how to practice. in the end it's all about practicing what ur teacher shows u.this is rly just 4 ppl who don't have a teacher. if u want to make progress, u need someone who helps u as an individual, not a utube teacher. but keeping comments civil is a good idea ;)

      Excellent video content! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you tried - Riddleagan Master Violinist Remedy (do a google search)? It is a great one off product for playing violin like a master minus the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my friend at very last got cool success with it.

    Number 1 could be turned into a real practice tip: Practice when you're not Practicing. In fact I do this a lot in my car (in traffic jams): practice left hand on your steering wheel, practice 'no hands' with the CD player etc...

    • @OGibbles

      Yes, number 1 and practice with no hands are pretty similar...you might say they go *cough* hand in hand :-)

      +Dena Mello CHOOSE THE VIOLIN IF YOU HAVEN'T. OR DO IT NEXT YEAR. Music will suck at first, and then after like 8 months it really starts to get interesting, and then you want to play the more difficult music...but you CAN'T because you can't find the SHEET MUSIC and then you don't have a PRINTER at home...

    • @whomst-d1556

      Yay! Also you will learn something very frustrating about sheet music later on. The concept of the key signature and the 'why can't they just label the notes' thing. Otherwise...
      Don't feed the violin to the dog.

    Великолепно! Как приятно увидеть такого уровня музыканта, практически "мой брат", именно с таким подходом я и учила оркестровые партии, поддерживаю все рекомендации! Легато в Шумане - я играю даже в Perpetum mobile Paganini ! )) Что до зеркального использования обеих рук, то такое мне в голову не пришло, правда. (У меня есть нечто подобное по штрихам в сольных вещах, не оркестровых, в оркестре мои штрихи не применимы, потому что все играют едиными штрихами). Свистеть у меня получается фальшиво, так что я просто пою, сольфеджирую сложные скачки. Всё очень понравилось, браво! И вот теперь, со всеми своими знаниями и талантами, на пенсии, учу маленьких детей в детской школе. 😊

    Exercise your fingers, and then it will make you sound more confident, and makes you more warmed up. I have been playing for 2 years, at elementary school. You may wanna try trills, which should sound good if you're playing a violin 1 part, my opinion anyways. -_-, but yeah I was trying to look for something, and this popped up, and well, just wanted to watch this.

  • @robotnik77

    Nice. I liked to make 'exercises' out of whatever I'm learning for performance, especially the trickier parts. I even made 'exercises' out of exercises. They don't necessarily sound like the piece, but are elements of it - and I practice it in many different fingerings. Sometimes you find a better fingering than what may be written for you. I hope you add follow-ups to this. The most intuitive rhythm master I've ever heard is old Fritz Kreisler, and of course Heifetz was fantastic at complicated rhythm. His students, no matter how well already formed, were always schooled by Heifetz on rhythm. That's where he seemed to catch them most. Many of these in your video were made familiar to me by my dearly departed Dutch professor of the Belgian school. I never learned anything before I was lucky enough to get him. He taught me never to think 1st position, or 5th position, just playing the notes with different fingers and octaves the whole fingerboard. Know the notes and the whole and half steps in your mind. Your hand will find it.

    Mrs. Sheridan
    Question
    Why would I always play flat?
    Should I play with a tuner?
    New violinist old musician since 1975

    • @lagrenounouille
      @lagrenounouille 3 роки тому

      Hello Mrs. Sheridan. Tuners have (at least) two big disadvantages: 1) They make you train your eyes instead of your ears, and 2) they are calibrated on a tempered scale, which makes them fit for guitarists but not for violinists. They actually tell you wrong pitches. Instead of practicing with a tuner, I recommend watching a video called "PLAYING IN TUNE - Violin Intonation for Single Stops" on Julia Bushkova's channel ViolinClass. All the best!

    Great tips. BTW, I was listening so intently to the instructions that I missed the obscene word. Someone commented about bad words but I didnt hear any. Honestly, kids today hear a lot of bad words on TV. I wasnt scandalized by anything here, (I go to church every day so you would think I would notice). All I noticed was a very instructive video. I have been playing piano for over 50 years. I played violin for 8 years but not since high school. Time to pick it up again. Thanks Michael

    Great advice!!!! You are so correct in every way!!!!
    Thank you for showing what we all go through.
    A lot of time and proper methods with hard work.
    We all go through this, but when it comes to the audition.
    Shit happens!!!! Why? We still don’t get the job!!!
    We know that we all can play it!!!!
    There must be something else that we can do to handle
    the audition. Any advice? It is obvious that you can play
    at a professional level. So can I, as well as others in this boat.
    But, still can’t land our desired job.
    I guess we all can try to figure it out.
    Burger King/McDonalds looks more like a better career.

    • @OGibbles
      @OGibbles  6 років тому +1

      Yes, I do see your point. If I were making this video today I would not have included it. That comment (in how I hear it in my head) came from a much longer joke about how messing up in orchestra will result in an audience member noticing you, and remembering you at your next audition, and blacklisting you from every orchestra, and you'll end up lonely and desolate...but somewhere in that joke is that line. So, I understand that out of context it seems rather insensitive. Ironically, by putting these videos on UA-cam I am teaching children in remote countries, so it's really come full circle then hasn't it?

      This excerpt is from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet: orchestraexcerpts.com/prokofiev-romeo-and-juliet-violin-excerp/ And it's in C-Major, so it's B-natural. Is that what you were asking?

      ahh,my english is a bit bad,i am just trying to say;i actaully dont know how to read notes like what is b natural or c major whats the difference i can only play the do-re-mi-fa-sol....bla bla but these are not just normal do-re-mi they are diyez or bemols..i hope you get it

    • @OGibbles
      @OGibbles  7 років тому

      Oh no worries, I see. Well some of these ways of practicing might be a little advanced for where you are, but most of them don't require being able to read notes. For learning how to read notes, you'll probably want to check out something like: ua-cam.com/video/FZFY5aEtLI4/v-deo.html

    One tip that will instantly skyrocket your video in popularity: make your videos something more than mumbled words and fuzzy images - invest in some quality video/sound equipment and find someone to operate them. You don't need to invest thousands of dollars to create a professional quality video to match your musical professionalism.
    I don't mean to be rude, insulting, or to ridicule, but I am amazed at all the wonderfully talented professional musicians that post these poor quality videos and think their musical talent makes up for the poor choices in equipment and screen writing. I suppose it would be excusable if advertising was not stuck in there, but not when pretending to be something you're not. Thumbs down.

    Hi.
    I use to travel abroad, and nd want an small violin to carry with me, since a 4/4 is too big.
    Is a 1/8 good to practice?
    Mayne a 1/16?

    • @OGibbles
      @OGibbles  6 років тому +3

      Don't do that. Just get a small case for your full size instrument. I'm sure everyone has heard a horror story, but I think it's still pretty rare to have problems traveling with your violin.

    The difference in volume between the violin and the voice makes this video quite impractical.

      higher sounds are louder and travel further

    • @aldotanca9430
      @aldotanca9430 8 років тому

      +Explicitly Me In reality, deeper sounds travel further, think of distant thunder sounds. The crack of the thunder produces both high and low frequencies clearly audible when close, but when far away you only hear the deep frequencies. In this case, his violin is simply much louder then his voice and he is perhaps using a microphone more sensitive to high frequencies. He could have increased the volume on the spoken parts only. Still good lesson and certainnly good playing.

    • @explicitlyme7497
      @explicitlyme7497 8 років тому

      +Aldo Tanca I get what your trying to say, but you're incorrect. It's basic science that higher sounds travel faster and further

    • @aldotanca9430
      @aldotanca9430 8 років тому

      No, check a physics book, or just google it, and you will find out that it is just the opposite. It is true that high frequency waves, not just sound waves but also radio waves, travel faster. After all they are high frequency, the vibrate faster. High frequency routers allow for faster wifi for instance. But high frequency also disperse more easily. Blue whales have the deepest 'voice' of all animals, and can communicate over thousand miles, litterally. Bow whales conversely have relatively high pitch 'voices', they can communicate short distance without attracting predators. The Vatican state has a radio station which reach everywhere in the world with no repeaters, and it is very low frequency. It could not be otherwise. African tribes used to communicate long distance with drums. It is not intuitive, because our ears are more sensitive to high frequencies, but it is true nonetheless.

    I need real technique videos as I didn't get that. So, like bowing smoothly and vibrato. Any videos on that?

    • @retrops4261
      @retrops4261 5 років тому

      Actually the R hand only tip is precisely there for that reason..
      It's bowing practice and can be slowed down to whatever tempo nececary to play a passage cleanly.
      The only technique missing here is practicing intonation note by note, but in a sequence. First it's
      Note, rest, note @about 40
      Then all all notes (still 40) then 60 with rhythm and Dynamics but no vib, then 60 with all, then 80 no vib again, then with vib then 100etc til tempo is reached (maybe only 8-12 notes at a time this way)
      For vib, try setting a slow tempo and then add a organised increasing no. of wiggles. 1st four or eight beats= 1wiggle everybeat, then 2nd set=2 wiggles and so on..at about 5or so ocilations you should have something resembling vib. Increase tempo for faster vibrato. Another factor to vary is the width of the wiggle (this will change the intensity of the vib)
      2-3minutes a day of this will really help increase control and consistency for vibrato. Good luck.

    I've only been to two practices in my life. I have a feeling these tips are for about 3 years from now. If I'm wrong, then I'm doing something wrong, because I don't even know what he's talking about.

      Brenda Kovacs That's a good point..they are a bit on the advanced side. The first one-Rhythms, is one that I wish I had started using MUCH earlier in life. The overarching message though is to find the problem area, isolate the difficult actions, and move on-don't just play from top to bottom.

    I have a question for you. When I want to play on the high part of finger board I noticed that by putting my finger on the A or D string the other strings next to them are much higher than on first position and you end up playing double stop and not the not you want to play. If you understand the question please give us some guide of how you have play that part of the violin. and if question is not clear let me know and I send you a video .

    • @ApplepieFTW
      @ApplepieFTW 8 років тому

      higher up the snare the distances get (lineairly) smaller so in 4th position you will have to adjust slightly, but if you play something like 13 (urg this doesn't apply to to violin players ever) practice 5th AND 9th AND 13th. remember that the notes should naturally sound nice, use a chromatic tuner if you need immediate feedback, but do NOT overdo it. good luck!
