- Using Bias FX 2 and Bias Amp 2, I matched the guitar tones of 25 heavy metal/hard rock albums. From best to greatest, this second volume of my guitar tone countdown includes Slipknot, Rush, System of a Down, Arch Enemy, Iron Maiden, Five Finger Death Punch, Def Leppard among others.
IMPORTANT 2023 UPDATE - Some users have reported they can't find my presets when searching Bias FX 2. This seems to be a glitch in their search system. To solve the issue, type in the search field "DMO -" (yes, just DMO followed by a space and hyphen) and choose "Sort by Popularity" in the drop-down beside the search field. You should see all of my presets.
Please note many users have taken my presets and created their own versions with similar names. To make sure you are downloading my original presets, my user name in Bias FX 2 is "Dan Oliv". Also, my original presets have a lot more downloads than the non-original versions.

My presets are optimized for live playing. If you use them for recording, I recommend the following:
. Use the single path (instead of the dual path, which has a slight delay for a stereo sound)
. Reduce the distortion levels (1.0 to 2.0 units in the distortion pedal is normally good enough)
. Raise the bass levels in the post-amp EQ (if it's part of the preset)
. Record your guitars four times (see my Four Guitars video for further explanation about quad recording)
. If part of the preset, disable the boost pedal
I recommend running Bias FX 2 as a VST in your favorite audio software, so you can better control the audio levels. One known issue with Bias FX is that some presets don’t have enough output. I control the volume of my presets through Reaper.

Face the Heat has such a killer tone and I’m glad to see it featured!
What's frustrating about Face the Heat is that it starts with one of their greatest and darkest songs, and of the best guitar tones ever. But then, for the most part, the album is just simple and basic hard rock with nothing too special. But yes, the guitar tone has to be recognized.

@@dmometalguitar yeeaaah I stopped doing down strokes. It's a very slippery slope to carpal tunnel/tendonitis. Plus, I don't really hear much of a difference between that and alternate picking, personally. 🤷♂️
This, just like Vol 1, is pretty much spot on. Dirt was the most off, at least to my ears. But oh man, you're amazing.

It's amazing how spot on these tones are. Do you ever match any tones outside of metal from bands like the Cure, Joy Division, Asylum Party, Drab Majesty, etc?
I love how in older comparison vids that you say "price doesn't reflect quality". This is SO true. One of the best guitars I have ever had hands on was an LTD KH202. Yes, the cheapest of the Hammet line. The bolt on neck, EMG for ESP passive pups, the liscenced FR, and the fretboard was roasted jatoba (I think....they are now anyway. Then it may have been rosewood). It just felt and played better to my hands. The finish on the neck was just perfect. The fretboard was just BEAUTIFUL, almost reflective. The pickups l, while passive "made for" were still amazingly good. Which leaves me with the Floyd. I usually am a hard tail only player. This changed my mind. It was amazingly great for tuning and stayed perfect throughout my time with that guitar. It surpassed a 1999 Gibson Gothic Explorer as my main for a time. I have since had a few more FR guitars and I gotta say NONE have touched that KH202.

Absolutely great jobs 🤟. Just one thing. When you try to put them in your own mix because you/ myself too want to sound your own mix like the "Big" idols . You can realise quickly. They're working for them mostly. Because the playing style, players and of course the studio and mix engineer . They are so different then what we have at home 😀(unfortunately)Otherwise you're absolutely master of the guitar tones 👍👌🎸

Thanks man, but one thing to keep in mind is, when I did those reviews years ago, I was one of the very few doing them (some of the first guitar reviews on UA-cam). Today you have thousands (if not millions) of guitar-related videos, and many of them are from players doing very professionally and/or as a career on UA-cam. I just do these guitar videos for fun, with zero expectations. But if people like and watch them, great. If not, I'm still having a lot of fun doing them - all for the love of metal!

I mean, i played guitar for decades before i watch your videos (a lot of times each one), but your videos changed my relation with the guitars, the way i look at them, the way i hear the detail, the way i do my setups, etc. I think many of todays metal youtubers also learn from you, so, if you do more reviews, i will watch a lot of times myself!

What happened to the CFH tone video?
I fixed the Cowboys From Hell tone, which is featured in this video. I removed that other video because it had the tone's old version. If you type "dmo cowboys from hell" on Bias FX, you will see a new, updated version of the CFH tone labeled as "UPDATED". Same thing with the Countdown to Extinction tone. I removed the other video because this video has a better, improved version of that tone.

I'm not sure why but with the delay on dual path mixer set to 0.3ms the guitar sounds more panned to the right (through headphones)??
The tiny delay between left/right is to create a nicer stereo sound when you play with monitors/speakers. I wouldn't recommend using it with headphones.
How many guitars do you try against each tone before you land on the right one, all of them, or do you have some idea to begin with?
It varies, no specific pattern in terms of which one I choose
Do you use the Standard version of both Bias FX and Bias amp or a different one?
I just use the standard version of Bias FX 2, which comes with the amps. You don't need Bias Amp unless you want to create your own amps.
@@dmometalguitar I want Bias Amp so I can follow your tutorial on the Far Beyond Driven video and create a tone based on some albums (mainly Razor - Violent Restitution and Sacrilege - Behind the Realms Of Madness) but thanks for the reply!
