- Upgraded is an upcoming romantic comedy starring Camila Mendes, Archie Renaux, Lena Olin and Marisa Tomei. With the corporate merger of Prime Video and MGM leading to hundreds of layoffs, upcoming rom coms "Upgraded" and "Five Blind Dates" have been given little to no promotion in the run-up to their releases.
"Upgraded" will premiere on Prime Video on February 9.
"Five Blind Dates" will premiere on Prime Video on February 13.

SOO deeply appreciative of your coverage of Five Blind Dates. It has honestly been really discouraging losing our execs and marketing, including no red carpet for the actors and insanely limited press if any. It really does feel like it's a disposable piece of media which is absolutely heartbreaking. We worked incredibly hard for over two years on (you're absolutely correct) a very modest budget, but managed to turn lemons into lemonade. It's the first POC Australian Original Romcom on Prime, it features an almost all Asian Diaspora/Pacific Islander/Indigenous cast that also has

As a writer who has written at Disney for five years, and has worked at most networks/streamers in development, it feels sometimes like an insurmountably difficult time in the industry. However, hearing someone like you speak on this, means SO SO much to all of us. Thank you so much.

NO RED CARPET??? Good grief, I'm so sorry that you and all the other people that have worked on this are being screwed over like this. There is absolutely no good reason for that to be happening when Hollywood / business execs are out here living in mansions, owning yachts, etc.
No idea how you stumbled across my video (especially since I didn't put Five Blind Dates in the title/thumbnail - a decision made entirely for SEO reasons) but hoping for all the best that your film can find its audience. Believe me when I say there is an audience for rom coms. The sleeper hit success of Anyone But You is proof enough of that.
How frustrating it must be to be a film maker or actor or crew person and your work just not hit the audiences due to upper level mismanagement or laziness.
RIGHT? We dream of getting to tell stories for a living, of making movies or series that can reach the world at large... only for capitalistic greed to refuse to pay for BASIC PROMOTION. Absolutely wild. 👀
Hehe as soon as I heard "Lulu Wang interview, I jumped straight into the comments to clarify it's the THR Roundtable with Scorsese video before I saw you edit the clip in! Her words about streaming being a place small films go to die really struck me (makes me think of the "content" vs art attitude).
Also because the Farewell is very important to me, like a very similar situation happened in my Indian family when my gran got cancer (except she passed away), so some memory space in my mind will always be allocated to that Lulu roundtable.

since we're in the same boat of being STARVED for romcoms, may i rec you and your subscribers one? (i'm not getting paid, obvi) it's called For Love Or Money (2019) and it's inspired by The Taming Of The Shrew but instead of shying away from its problematic premise it embraces it, giving us a few scenes of deep genuine emotion in a canvas of plotting and double crossing. it's medium budget, barely promoted and with no big names, but it goes to show that if your story has substance, the Moments will HIT
I am definitely more intrigued by the story of Five Blind Dates than Upgraded. Thank you for addressing the issues regarding streaming platforms.
I guess that's why you haven't looked at The Partner Track. I would love a review of it to see if it's worth watching.
I had to look up what project you were talking about and sure enough, a streaming original series cancelled after one season. I never watched it cause I've been conditioned to not get invested in new streaming series. I simply can't be bothered anymore. A streaming original film? MAYBE, since it's a one and done situation. But a SERIES? That will inevitably be prematurely cancelled? No thanks! 🙃
