I honestly was expecting it to be super cliche but fun/good and honestly got just that for most of it and lovely stuff but then the break up, her putting her daughter first and the ACTING when he goes back to her place and leaves the watch again really got to me and I was emotional so it really elevated the whole thing for me, truly exceeded my expectations and Anne Hathaway is giving looks all throughout, we stan
Right?? Anne Hathaway acted the hell out of this movie and I so appreciate her bringing her A-list status back to the genre because I’m sick of industry executives not funding these types of movies, WE NEED MORE OF THEM BACK IN THE CINEMA! 🫶🏻🎞️✨
Also, anyone who was a child watching Anne Hathaway in Princess Diaries knows that she is highly qualified to do both romance and comedy, Mia was constantly tripping and falling 😂 SO!!! Hire Anne for more rom coms, we want to see it! 🗣️
Book spoiler: I didn’t read the book, but I read an article about the authors opinion on the movie. Apparently, in the book they don’t end up together and solene always loves Hayes a little bit but he moves on/doesn’t come back. The author speculated that the movie ended differently because American audiences “couldn’t handle” sad endings, but I think it ended differently because the girls deserve happiness. (I’m also not American, but the author is, so idk why she specified American audiences)
I don't know what the genre of the book is but the film was marketed as a rom com and if you don't give me a happy ending in a rom com, THEN IN MY MIND IT'S NOT A ROM COM. 😂
@@LadyJeneviaFrom what I’ve read about the author’s approach writing the book, she wasn’t really aiming at writing a “romance genre” novel. Also, it never occurred to her to not have sex scenes. I can't stop singing the songs...not only is Nicholas gorgeous and a talented actor but he can also SING!!!...beautiful voice....loved, loved, loved everything about the movie. Anne was spectacular as always!! I hope they win some awards.
I've read the book and I found the ending crushing, but real. I respect the author for writing it that way. But I also commend whoever made the change to a happy ending in the movie, it's more fitting to the tone of the story and ultimately we got the best of both worlds!
@@evildoesnotsleep-x2b Exactly! Also something worth noting is that the book was published in 2017-that’s a completely different world than when the movie was released. Though the book gained popularity during the (early) pandemic, even that was a remarkably different reality than 2023/24 when the movie was made. People’s appetite for escapism and stories with a happy resolution is much greater now. Historically, there are patterns of how art and creatives respond to the reality of the times. So I’ve known the arts were going to, (finally!) shift away from being “dark and gritty.” This has been my silver lining for the past few years.
I don't know how to feel about the movie being a lot happier and great to watch. I love that they presented the most hopeful version of the book, but they omitted the brutal realism which (spoilers i guess) is: deadbeat dad gets his gf pregnant and they live happy ever after while Solene declines rekindling things with Hayes because people will never stop harassing her as long as she's with him. Plus, her business takes a huge hit, clients reject her for association (remember her work is focused on promoting WOC artists). Only her very french mother stands by her, in a moving display of motherly love, and common sense. Essentially the theme is how society sees women aging and Solene's attempts to live her way. I wonder if the extreme focus in the romance in the film is preventing us from having these difficult but imperative conversations
I'm the same, I hear Anne Hathaway in a romcom and I am there. I think well done to them, they got the most important part right, the chemistry between her and him was fantastic. I can forgive a lot else if the chemistry is on point. Also finally a woman around 40 who actually isn't pathetic and has a pair. Usually they reserve that only for the 'hainus b*tch' to quote the legend that is Allison Janney, not the regular person who has dealt with some sh*t. Also the discord going round social media about pay. How dare a woman with a 25 year career, household name, Oscar winner and producer on the film get paid more than her male costar who at the time of filming wasn't someone you'd ever heard of. About time we saw women paid what their worth, which is way more than so many if their male costars (if anything I'm suprised it was only that amount, its Anne Hathaway, they sell the movie on her being in it, full stop)
I can’t honestly believe that any of those ignorant complaints are coming from anywhere except children. No grown adult who knows the struggles of affording life under late stage capitalism would be arguing about her salary.

Read the book and watched the movie. Love Nick and Anne, and the chemistry was great. However, the idea of someone dating someone damn near their child's age is so ick to me. He's young enough to be her son and old enough to be her daughter's older brother, not to mention his comment in the book of how her daughter had the same lips as her and her own weird feelings about the comment; also the fact her daughter was subjected to bullying because of her galavanting around with this young boy. In truth, I preferred the sad ending in the book over the hopeful one in the movie. I get people wanting happy endings when the world is so bleak, but in situations like this one, I would have liked it to end there to show that while there is always hope, some things just aren't worth hoping for in the hopes it'll work out and that reality will always hit harder than any fantasy one may wish to be real. (I'm a pessimist at best, so these are just my honest thoughts).🤷🏽♀️

Hi again and apologies in advance for the essay😸! I've been waiting for you to talk about this one. I'm actually opposite to you in that I normally like to read (or in this case re-read) the book before watching the adaptation, but in this case, I just couldn't wait. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie, but as a reader of the PHENOMENAL. albeit not perfect, book (whoever says it's bad is wrong!) although I also enjoyed it, I didn't love it as much as I wanted to. And Nicholas as the leading man... be still my beating heart😍🤤😍! The changes made from the book (which is not a conventional genre romance) made for a much lighter story, and as much as I kind of understand why they were made, that's why I didn't love it. There were some iconic lines in the book that I would have loved to see play out on screen, that even with the changes would have upped the ante a little bit and added some depth to the story. Also, there was a very different vibe overall, and whilst I'm scratching my head at anyone describing this as a romcom, whilst it does have some amusing moments (unlike the book as I recall), that does not equal romcom. I see that there are quite a few people in the comments who have provided spoilers for the book - which is a shame if you want to read it, as the surprise of the journey is somewhat marred. But I hope you do choose to read it, Robinne Lee did a superb job with a debut, it's just a shame she has not written anything else since. And lastly, as she is a Black woman, I am peeved that so few people in the reviews that I've seen so far have really discussed the book and its author at all, especially as with Bridgerton, we can't seem to escape her in the majority of the convos about the series. Anyway, thanks as always for your discussion... roll on Bridgerton S3! And hug those gorgeous little kitties on my behalf 😻😻😻
I treasured the book for its daring nature and realistic take on a "forbidden" love story. As you said, it's not purely romance, it deals with women aging, the price of fame, the meaning of art, what one would sacrifice for happiness and who deserves it, moving on after a life upheaval and motherhood. I cried a lot while reading it and it'll be with me always. And still, I can't be mad that they took the romantic elements of it and made it into a movie, it's not the same, but it feels like we got the best of both worlds
I thought the book was much better than the movie. I did listen to it on Audible so maybe that added a lot to it. Hayes was far older emotionally than his years and made it believable that a smart, accomplished 40 year old woman could fall for him. Solene’s daughter was actually a child and didn’t look like a 23 year old (something that bugged me in the movie). No bad music or cringy dance scenes.
I think the book was better than this movie; however, I preferred the movie's ending. Also, in the book Solene was going to an artist's retreat in the beginning, it didn't make sense to change it to her going camping alone. In the book the daughter was "in love" with Hayes, not Rory. That added a lot of tension to the mother daughter relationship. The dad getting divorced, I didn't like either. They gave Solene and Hayes a happy ending, so let the dad stay married too. In the book, he was pretty supportive.
can we also talk about how the painting they chose for her to be obsessed with was literally the most graphic designer beginning class piece they had shown thus far, even more appalling than the straight up greyscale flexed back muscles photo in the gallery...
I was actually dissapointed at the ending being too short, not because I wanted to see them together more, but rather purely to see more of "5 years later" hayes like come onnnnnn
I had some social media mutuals that would go to sooooooooo many gigs of The Wanted and meet them, and they had nothing but nice things to say about the experience every time. I love that they managed to do a reunion one last time after Tom got sick. You could see how much love they all had for each other. 💐💐💐
The only things that turn me off so badly bc i am only think yeah irl this is the biggest red flag for me dating a person in their young 20s when you are in your 30s/40s
Had a friend in elementary and middle school who was obsessed with The Wanted. I recall her crying in the 7th grade when they split up. She was livid. Poor Chris

Thank you! 🥹 I’m ultimately talking about entertainment fiction and it’s all mostly meant in good fun. There are far more important issues than people playing dress up to tell stories. There are university students, KIDS, risking their lives, their degrees, entire careers before they’ve even started, to force real change. If I can’t even share a few links, why should anyone listen to my opinions about anything?
Menudo, the firts 3 edition because my mother and father put it so much in our house that I became a fan of the boyband of the childhood to adolescent years of my parents. So in my tween to adolescent years was the only one knowing and singing song from a band that it members could be my parents or grandparents.
Menudo is a fascinating case to me because never have I ever seen music industry higher-ups so determined to keep a boy band name alive… no matter how many times they have to cycle members in and out over DECADES 🔁
Your birthday is the day before mine! 🎉 I was a BSB girlie. I liked ‘N Sync, but it became the JT show and meh. So all your JC love was 👌🏻 Kinda sad I got rid of Prime (but not really) now. I assume it will never go to dvd so I could rent it (Redbox still exists lol)? Do they even allow people to buy a digital copy of their original content? As always, love your thoughtful and hilarious review! And cannot wait for your Bridgerton S3 videos!!!
Well, I'm Solene's age, so my favourite boyband was Backstreet Boys way in the 90' 😉 I liked some scenes in the movie (Anne awesome as always!), but in general, I felt somehow awkward watching it... Maybe due to the fact I'm the same age? I'm not sure. And I couldn't stand the songs and choreography... it was so tacky... Especially because I loved Nicholas' voice in "The beat beneath my feet" - the soundtrack is sooo goood and his voice in those songs draws you in ❤️ The songs in this movie however made it flat and too "boyish" for my taste. Summing up: not my favourite movie and most probably I won't watch it again. Thank you for a great video as always 🙂
“I Want It That Way” is truly THAT SONG, like even the most anti-pop fiends know how to sing along to that one, it even had the Brooklyn Nine-Nine shout-out decades later, and the band can still do big arena shows decades later!
You are such a smart and articulate woman. It is hard to have so much to say. Were you born in the States or are you an immigrant? You are pretty smart!
I don't know. I couldn't fully get on board. I have a 17 year old son so I couldn't quite get past the idea of him meeting a 40 year old in 7 years. Also, the thought of a romantic relationship with anyone near his age gives me the ick. I wanted to love it and I do like Anne Hathaway but...
It took me longer than it should have to realise that when you said "Lady C" you were talking about Lady Chatterley, I was trying to recall a character from The Idea of You with a "C" last name, CLEARLY I AM NOT WELL RESTED AND NEED TO GO TO SLEEP. 😆
I really love this movie, watched it the day it was released on Amazon and have watched it several more times since. It really reminded me of when I was following News Kids on the Block around the Southeast I was young and free I even met Donnie Wahlberg his brother Mark Wahlberg when he was a part of Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. One of their bodyguards lived in Atlanta where I love I went to a party at his house and there were woman way older than my friends and I there having a good time.
Picture this: You're a woman over 35 who's been waiting forever for a new romcom that really gets you. Anne Hathaway? Check. Escapist fun? Double check. But then you remember... Amazon. Shudder We all know their rep for treating workers like disposable robots. So you're stuck wondering - is this flick fabulous enough to sell your soul for a free Prime trial? Someone spill the tea! I need to know if this is "book the whole weekend off for a solo movie marathon" good, or more of a "wait 'til it hits a slightly less evil streaming service" situation. Help me out!
Well if you want to do a free trial, you can always cancel before you’re charged. Just write it down in your planner or set an alarm to remind yourself. Prime Video originals by definition don’t typically move to other platforms. It’s the traditional studios that typically license their films out to different platforms for different periods of time. Also… not to be THAT person but if you dig around, more or less EVERY big corporation/studio/platform has receipts of screwing over workers in one way or another. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care (it’s great that you’re aware and want to be responsible with your money!) but I’m only mentioning that to the extent that it’s an unfortunate reality that it’s almost impossible to partake in viewing movies/series without brushing up against some workers somewhere that aren’t being paid/treated fairly. And that’s especially obvious in a post joint SAG/WGA strike for the second time in Hollywood history. I didn’t mean to write that much 😂 but maybe you can tell it’s a topic I’ve contemplated A LOT considering what I do on my channel. I won’t tell you how to spend your money, though! Go with whatever choice you think is right for you!

Solene’s daughter was actually a child and didn’t look like a 23 year old (something that bugged me in the movie). No bad music or cringy dance scenes.
Some bands I enjoyed growing up:
Girls generation
All star weekend
Jonas brothers
The cheetah girls
Lady A
Super Junior
Amigas! Cheetahs! Friends for life! 🥳❤️🔥🗣️
If that's not an opening for a sequel, I don't know what is
These new rom-coms feel so sterile. The appeal of 90's rom-coms was the warmth of the world building!
The Wanted!! Oh my gosh, YES. Glad You Came and All Time Low bring back so many college memories 👏🏼
I had some social media mutuals that would go to sooooooooo many gigs of The Wanted and meet them, and they had nothing but nice things to say about the experience every time. I love that they managed to do a reunion one last time after Tom got sick. You could see how much love they all had for each other. 💐💐💐
The only things that turn me off so badly
bc i am only think yeah irl this is the biggest red flag for me dating a person in their young 20s when you are in your 30s/40s
Honestly, if you guys had fun with it, that's a good thing.
Had a friend in elementary and middle school who was obsessed with The Wanted. I recall her crying in the 7th grade when they split up. She was livid. Poor Chris
At least they did a reunion! Not every boy band does a full reunion with touring! 🥹
I was a Jonas Brothers girlie.
Okay now elaborate - which one was your favourite? 😂
Regardless of the fact that I actually love your content, your stance on Palestine is enough to make me stick around forever because I’ll always be here for creators with integrity.
I like every single video before I’ve even watched it. And when I don’t have time to watch, I click in just to leave a like anyway.
Thank you! 🥹
I’m ultimately talking about entertainment fiction and it’s all mostly meant in good fun. There are far more important issues than people playing dress up to tell stories. There are university students, KIDS, risking their lives, their degrees, entire careers before they’ve even started, to force real change. If I can’t even share a few links, why should anyone listen to my opinions about anything?
I listen a Starship Troopers reference in a rom-com review i give a like.
I've met and interviewed Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico), and he was very nice! 😄
@@LadyJenevia So true
Your birthday is the day before mine! 🎉
I was a BSB girlie. I liked ‘N Sync, but it became the JT show and meh. So all your JC love was 👌🏻
Kinda sad I got rid of Prime (but not really) now. I assume it will never go to dvd so I could rent it (Redbox still exists lol)? Do they even allow people to buy a digital copy of their original content?
As always, love your thoughtful and hilarious review! And cannot wait for your Bridgerton S3 videos!!!
When Lady Jenevia says I must watch this movie, I MUST WATCH THIS MOVIE!
Rom com revival, let’s goooooooo! 🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️
I LOVED this movie! Plan to rewatch whenever I feel like freshly-murdered ass.
Yesssssssss, I love having a big playlist of movies that I can go to when I need a pick-me-up! ✨
I loved it too
Well, I'm Solene's age, so my favourite boyband was Backstreet Boys way in the 90' 😉 I liked some scenes in the movie (Anne awesome as always!), but in general, I felt somehow awkward watching it...
Well I loved the movie and I loved the songs in it! I didn’t like the book.
Did you write out your monologue or thoughts on paper first and then practice reading them .That is a lot of thoughts
Absolutely loved this movie.
This movie was DEFINITELY tailored to fit a woman’s fantasy!
If that had been true, she would’ve kicked her ex at least once. 🤣🏃🏻♀️
@@LadyJenevia I guess but also what 24 year old OFFERS to smell the contents of a woman’s broken fridge haha
@@moviemelody2210 Lmaoooooooooo one that is desperately trying to win over the person they have a thing for 😂
@@LadyJenevia that’s definitely desperation:) Hayes is adorable in that scene
This movie 🍿🎥🍷 was a nice surprise 😁 I enjoyed 😊😌 Lady C's lover 🤌🏾✨
It took me longer than it should have to realise that when you said "Lady C" you were talking about Lady Chatterley, I was trying to recall a character from The Idea of You with a "C" last name, CLEARLY I AM NOT WELL RESTED AND NEED TO GO TO SLEEP. 😆
@@LadyJenevia 😆 my bad 🫠
Amazon. Shudder
We all know their rep for treating workers like disposable robots.
