Kill the lights. Light up the Jack O’ Lantern. Its time for “DARK DARK DARK”, a spooky and campy descent into atmospheric madness. This take on an old classic story may or may not answer that age old question: What’s lurking in the shadows? What’s watching you from the darkness?
Lopside Animation returns after "Long Gone Gulch" to bring you a Halloween treat starring the incredible Beau Billingslea (Cowboy Bebop, Naruto). We’ve rejoined with many of the talented folks who helped make LGG possible, including an eerie score by Dom Kreep.

Clever use of the black turning your screen into a mirror if you're watching in a pretty well lit room (when he says "you")
Yeah, I wonder why people don't use that technique often. It's really good.
@@Klabbity_Kloots its because its racist
@@Jesuswas6ay Breaking News: Are Reflections Racist? One Halfwit On UA-cam Says Yes
Not when ur watching on a TV from an angle 😢
"Hey how do you like your chocolate?"
- DARK DARK
Barista: So how would you like your coffee today?
Narrator: *Dark Dark Dark*
"Someone once told me that none of us are actually afraid of the dark; we're scared of what it conceals from us. We're afraid of having something with the potential to hurt us standing right before our eyes and not registering it as a threat. People can be like that, too" - Michael Myers
our instincts go back to a time when we were naked, and alone, without shelter or technology, a time when the predators that hunted at night ruled, not us... we hid from the world in caves hudled togather in terror of all the animals that were faster, and deadlier than us... we have forgotin this old fear... its why we watch horror films... to reconnect with that ancient part of our selves... the animal part.
That seems disturbingly fitting coming from a comedic actor like him.
I have to assume that was followed by a "yeah baby yeah".
@@thestooge200 aye fancy meeting you here, love your art btw ❤
Michael Myers as such Wisdom
Narrator: "The trees judge your every step."
Me: At least I CAN step you judgmental bastards!
Lol now I’m just imaging Treebeard walking up and being like, “What was that?”
Ngl my head kept anxiously anticipating the 3rd "Dark" through out the whole animation.
Loved it tho :)
Same.
Same it really bothered me
Same.
But I think that’s part of the intensity of the short.
maybe it's part of the horror
Same
Maybe the real treasure was the darkness we found along the way.
Hum 🧐😱😱😱😱
😳😳
Did you get that out of a fortune cookie?
@@k9kimbo yes
nice
The sound design in this is awesome, and the style gave me huge Over The Garden Wall vibes. Love this!
Yeah the SFX and sound mixing can easily make or break the atmoshere. But they totally knocked it out of the park!
YES! It feels a lot like it's from over the garden wall!
This shows we don't need jumpscares or gore to be scary.
This video plays with your senses and psychologically scares you.
What a masterpiece.
I bet 2 years later, people will look back at this
I already love it. :o)
There was a jumpscare at the end tho, also it isn’t scary.
Hi The Unknown Man!! Remember me!? The slug that flattered you on your amazing cartoon rendition of "Sound the Alarms"? =)
@@goteamslugs oh yeah. I haven't seen you in a while
@@TUM_Toons I quite agree! So speaking of that; I've been meaning to ask you something! I've had some ideas for Siren head in APNSD. May I have your permission to use the clips of Siren head chasing? Of course I'll credit - How could I not!? :)
I love horror short films, and with Halloween being less than a week away, this is great to see
It’s like I stepped into a poem by Edgar Allen Poe!
Rawhide: The End. Was that scary ?
Snag: N-N-No! I’m just going to sleep with lights on.
So cool you got Jet from Cowboy Bebop to voice this!
Finally ! Pleasure is mine ! The animation is a pure pleasure, it's so beautiful ! The atmosphere, the voice, sounds, drawings, colors,... everything is PERFECTION incarnate !!!
Therapist, reviewing their notes: So what i'm getting is.. a lot of DARK.
Oh my god, great animation, and Beau Billingslea is perfect for this kind of spooky narration! Amazing stuff! Thanks for the happy Halloween spooks!
Happy Halloween!
The line about the moon sitting on an unseen wall is one of the most beautiful pieces of writing I've ever heard!!
We really need more horror based animations.
ill drink to that
We hope to make more!
@@lopsideanimation Awesome! :D
Maybe we can ask Laika for that!
This reminds me of old radio stories I used to listen to, they don't do it anymore so this really brought up great nostalgic memories of these radio stories. Great work on the animation, writing and Beau 😃 was such a great va, swell work ^^.
Loved this short a lot, this gave me a bit of nostalgia when I was little my dad told me and brother a story about a "dark dark house" but not on the level as this short film coupled with these visuals it added more to it. Great job on this :D
Thank you! That was the story that inspired us to try own version!
This feels like the most loving tribute to UPAs the Telltale Heart by the way of Ray Bradbury.
Totally! Both were huge inspirations for this short.
@@lopsideanimation you all absolutely succeeded! I initially thought this WAS a Ray Bradbury short story out of something like the October Country or Illustrated Man so you caught me off guard when I realised that Zach wrote it himself. Marvellous work to you and the team!
@@lopsideanimation have my baby
This should get an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film.
I like how the narrator becomes more & more scared as the story progresses.
Sounds like someone shoulda brought a frickin flashlight, huh?
This seems like a good time of year to rewatch this
Did anyone else see the figurine of Rawhide on the shelf at the end?
Very nice easter egg, I loved it.
I did!
always, ALWAYS love to hear Beau. Phenominal
I said it before and i'll say it again. this short still reminds me of the Disney adaptian of The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, but it also kinda reminds me of Over The Garden Wall as well.
omg, that's so good, the atmosphere, the voice, the scenes, you get stuck and attentive watching this, but I confess that in the part of the paintings my attention was broken and I started laughing because of the faces. This short horror film reminds me a lot of Over the Garden Wall, for the forest and the tone of voice of the narrator. But anyway, this is perfect.
This 5 minute short was much more scarier than the horror movies that try to be scary but just use mindless gore and jump scares
Holy shit they got JET to narrate it. That's incredible.
My mouth fell open. This man's voice is a treasure.
Beau Billingslea is a freaking national treasure.
Wow this was so good! I loved all of it, but the bits of animal life in the darkness near the beginning was especially awesome. The crickets really stood out. Superb work as always!
The visuals are superb, and Beau's performance is excellent as always...but, the writing, the word choice has crawled into my ears, and clawed out a space in my brain. Branches "greedily grabbing" the moon. The frogs croaking 'tunes of misery". The air "quiet, but always listening". A house with "windows made of midnight". Every word of this takes me back to nights spent huddled under blankets, flash light guiding me down the back roads of Bradbury while the wind whispered to the trees, and the distant train whistle marked the hour, not knowing someone was awake to hear.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Hi, Zach here. Thank you so much for this comment. Its funny you should mention Bradbury, he's an inspiration and I read "The October Country" right before writing the script for this film. I tried my best, so this really really means a lot! Happy Halloween!
@@lopsideanimation Hey there! Your effort and influences shine so bright in this short, and you should be proud of what you and your team have accomplished here. You're a talented and passionate bunch, and your collective works are an endless source of joy and inspiration. Happy Halloween Lopsidians!
P.S. Hearing back from you? That's a treat I'll not soon forget.
Well done! Atmospheric and creepy! This is a testament of animation doing horror.
Such a beautiful short. The design, the animation, the overall presentation, really really well done!!!
You managed to capture the very spirit of a horror animation: The Dark Dark Tension.
Awesome. I assume this was inspired by The Deep, Dark Wood from the children's book of the same name. I remember that scaring me shitless as a kid.
Its a story that's been retold in countless different ways, mostly in children's books. We wanted to do our own version.
@@lopsideanimation It worked. It was well done and beautifully animated.
There's not a whole lot of actual animation in this short, and that minimalism helped greatly with the scares.
Beautiful art and really good voice acting! I was more scared of the fear in his voice than the visuals. Liked a lot that is all first person camera, it feels more creepy.
Thank you! What's scariest is usually what you don't see.
Now this was a keeper, very well done and well animated ^^
Halloween time babeyyy, I love the new spooky style you did for this animation, backgrounds are also soooo gooodddd!!!!
Fun Fact: ("The Narrator") Beau Billingslea was the voices of Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop
That a special place in my heart & soul listing to his v.a. once again.
Yo no way you guys got Jet from Cowboy Bebop to narrate this? Niceeeeeeeeeee.
Yup! He was such a pleasure to work with.
Well this story took a “puts sunglasses” DARK turn
This feels like a picture book I read for Halloween in second grade... I love it
Now this halloween I ain't gonna find a better animated film. You rock Lopside
I love the linework throughout this short. Everything just looks so beautiful and gives me tales from the cryptkeeper vibes 🔥
Brilliant work! Incredible animation and stunning sound design! This is like a perfect, creepy bedtime story.
That was genuinely scary! Thank you so much!
Things I learnd :
1 - it's dark
2 - I've got amazing hair
3 - I like this chain
The animation on the cat retreating under the log was so clean. Good job, guys.
reminds me of emily dickinson's one need not be a chamber to be haunted and the idea that we ourselves are more terrifying than any horror
Anyone else dwelling on how we don't hear any footsteps after the narrator's panic?
"You" don't fit into a box, but a ghost could, and such a panic sounds like it could possibly be fatal...
Doesn't help that it wasn't until near the end that I realized why the narration was starting to sound familiar, and a certain Mr. Schwartz' version of the box did have a ghost!
I can ABSOLUTELY see Jet telling this story to Ed on a dark dark night on the Bebop. Fantastic job by everyone involved
Ha! Now THAT I wanna see.
The day I finally get my fiancé out of the hospital, you guys put out this beauty! Thank you!
Glad for you! Hope they're doing okay!
@@princessthyemis So much better! Thank you! Enjoy the short!
The animation is amazing💖
Gives me Tell Tale Heart vibes and I love every second of it
what a *dark,* *DARK* video this is.
This Is like a really well animated Creepypasta and i love it.
I just love the art in this so much. I would love certain scenes as prints! You've truly captured the spirit and charm of Halloween
Love those old creepypasta vibes!
Absolutely beautiful! I always loved Wee Sing for Halloween’s “In a Dark Dark Wood” as a kid. Seeing this and turning that rhyme even more haunting and atmospheric was truly wonderful.
This would be even more terrifying if it was released during the night when it’s “Dark, Dark 😱” 😁
OMG I love it, all are so creepy and... I dont know but Is really great, I love this time of the year the animation and all was a masterpice 💕
Finally! A wonderfully creative short story that makes me happy, happy, happy.
This sounds like an expanded version of a poem my grandfather used to read to me every Halloween! This was absolutely fantastic! He’s blind but the fantastic descriptions and sound design 👌🏾. I can’t wait to show him this!!!
This was fantastic to watch. There was such an unsettling atmosphere that had me on edge the entire time
Thanks for opening my box was stuck in that thing way too long. Sorry about the lights couldn't pay the light bill.
Adequate levels of Darkness in this short film.
Absolutely loved this! I’ve been watching it over and over sometime this year and it always gets me in the Halloween mood! And I loved the twist at the end where instead of it shouting “A GHOST!!” It said calmly and creepily “..you” like how dark (dark dark👀) is that!
Thank you so much!
Beautyful!! I saw Bimbo, Betty and Koko on the shelf!!
Dark dark shading, I live for that amazing work
Jokes on you. Im a mutant with perfect night vision!
Jet Black (cowboy bebop) narrating YES! Amazing spooky art YES YES! Creepy rooms and dolls YES YES YES! Loved everything about this short great work! Bravo!
That stayed very good,well dark👌😏
This was good and creepy, No jump scares just plain good old horror atmosphere and creepy visuals. Really enjoyed this and Happy Halloween everyone!
This was the perfect amount of spooky and ominous
I really get a disney ride vibe off this cross between haunted mansion narrator and old horror scenes in the sleeping beauty ride.
Holy cow, you got Beau Billingslea to narrate! So cool! One of the most iconic VA’s if you ask me. And he knocked it out of the park! Animation and writing was great too! Heck, even the sound design with the creaky doors and stairs really sold to me that I was in a creaky old house. I could almost smell the moldy floorboards
I too grew up reading and listening to a dark dark room...and other stories.
I love ya'lls style. I could see a special for Halloween with folk art designs being mixed in a poem or tune.
I remember hearing this story in school when I was really young. You have no idea how much this means to me
my god, that was fantastic. that gave me some chills.and on halloween too
brilliant animation as always.
"The neighbor's dog at 3 fffffFUCKING AM goes bark BARK"
I remember asking my mother to read me this story almost every night, it was one of my favorites as a child.
The fact that they got Jet Black from Cowboy: Bebop to narrate this is beyond amazing 🤩
Wow I love this animation, makes me want to make an animated short video for my creepy horror stories!
Do it!
I honestly thought it would be a mouse in the box, and this was a new take on on that old kids story “A Dark, Dark Tale”.
this hit hard; though I felt like it was forcing you to be scared rather than scare you
This is Halloween perfection.
i remember my siblings me scary "story" of a dark forest, where there was dark house, and inside there was... well you get it. Thank you lopside, for animating a little bit of my childhood :)
For some reason this unlocked a memory for me. Something about this is nostragia
Zach must enjoy darkest dungeon. This was brilliant
This is awesome, glad to see more stuff out of this channel you all make fantastic animations
Dark is truly scary I felt the fear and malevolent anticipation not knowing what peers out from the darkness that fear your heart in raw emotion can only register 🖤
Ugh, this was indescribably good. Wonderfully spooky
I didn't initially catch on to what the story and visuals were based on, until I realized there was an emphasize on the "dark, dark, dark" phrase throughout the short, and then I saw the abandoned dark house. And the nostalgia hit me like a truck.
What a great callback and love letter to Alvin Schwartz's work, particularly his "In a Dark, Dark Room" children's book, with a beautifully twisted animated short. Great job with the animation and storytelling! :D
Came for kreeps, stayed for the amazing atmosphere
You just visualized every childs' including mines fear of the dark.
Amazing work. Keep up the awesome artwork dude😊👍⭐
