    Us Brits have a fondness for rhododendrons, the Victorian plant hunters brought them back from far flung parts of the world. If you visit the UK, I can recommend talking a walk round the park at Ashton Memorial in Lancaster, Lancashire, some of the rhododendrons there are HUGE. Great video, I learned loads from this, thank you.

    Hi Mike, I'm new to your channel and just subscribed to it. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
    Could you please provide me some information about what is the best fertilizer to use on Gardenias and mandevilla?
    I'm located in East Tennessee, near the border with Virginia. Since this year our spring temperatures have been absolutely crazy from 80's to low 60's in the same day, both plants had suffered and the gardenia is constantly losing its blooms and the mandevilla has not only lost his blooms but also the majority of its leaves, even though I had covered several times when temperatures have gone below 65.
    I have them in an acid medium which I mixed adding Kellogg organic plus soil, river sand , compost, perlite, vermiculite and some soil from my own yard.
    They were attacked by tiny red spiders and some tiny green flies, I used Bioadvanced insect killer, as suggested by the garden center in town. Besides watering with Epsom salt once a month, what other best practices can you share? Thank you in advance.

    I also like you passion, you can see and hear it in your videos.
    Maybe it is somewhere in all of your videos, but what is the deal with you and rhodies? Just like them? Or is there a specific reason or driving factor to produce them?

      @MikeKincaid79  7 років тому +3

      Thanks for the comment, Bill. I'm not sure what it is with me and the rhododendrons. I guess when all the factors line up, people just find their passion. I live in an area that is really conducive to growing and propagating rhododendrons and they're everywhere here. I think it started as a challenge because they're one of the more difficult plants to propagate but in my opinion one of the more beautiful. So big risk but big reward. Every year my place lights up with the most beautiful blooms. You can drive by a lot of places and see mass plantings of a lot of plants but not rhododendrons because they are either too expensive or too difficult to propagate so for me to create all of this for people to see is somewhat amazing because you don't see so many different rhodies and blooms in one place all the time. They also add a real tropical feel with their big lush green growth in the spring and summer.

    Wow that's a lot of urea in that fertilizer! I wonder if you can get better results with a different product. Urea is slow acting and can cause soil pH swings. I would say you'd prefer to have a product that has more potassium and phosphate. And more nitrogen than potassium, but not by a lot. And that the nitrogen composition is like 50% nitrate, 40% ammonia, 10% urea. I got a bulk bag of 25kg osmocote that has a 12 to 14 month release. But it was more than double the price. I think urea is the cheapest source of nitrogen, so maybe that explains it. This would be good to mix in for lower value field-grown plants that need a lot of nitrogen.

      Honestly, I just plant them in the dirt. I loosen up the soil about twice as big as the root ball and then just plant them in the loosed soil. I mulch heavily and then use a tablespoon or so of this fertilizer. Mulch is the key.

      Don't listen to the naysayers. There's always going to be people out there telling you "it won't work". Just prove them all wrong by doing it. Plants are more adaptable than we think. Make sure they are planted in a spot with some shade from direct sun for half the day, mulch really well when planted, and water frequently the first 3 years. Add a little slow release fertilizer every year in March for the first 3 years and you'll be well on your way to having a beautiful rhododendron..........unless you live in Phoenix, lol, and if that's the case, you're better off planting oleander or plumeria.

    They are hardy in my zone (5b), in part sun, which meets the light exposure requirements (the bigger one gets more sun), but I have only fertilized once.
    Could the pH of my soil be the problem if it is neutral and they require acidic, or would it be my lack of fertilizing?

      I like to use the slow release fertilizer in the spring. It has a great ratio of npk for the growing season and a well rounded mineral content. It pretty much gets used up by the end of summer which is perfect because I don't want to encourage growth through the winter. I do use some water soluble miracle grow for certain plants at certain times of the year but mostly use the sustained release.

      In our climate, they don't grow outdoors. I have started seeds in my window but just for house plants.
