I loved the original Hawaii Five O. Jack Lord and all of the other actor's and actresses played there roles so well. Miss having good shows like this to watch every week.
I still remember watching this and Carol Burnett Show with my family growing up. Sometimes 5-0 ended with a happy ending, sometimes it did not. I think this series was used as a blueprint for many crime drama shows ever since. Good acting,.gorgeous scenery, great scripts, and all the action/car chases one could hope for as a child of the 70's! Loved Hawaii 5-0!
I love watching this show as it brings back memories of living there in 65-68 when my Dad was stationed there in the Navy. It was a wonderful place to live as a pre-teen.
Has a kid I also lived there in 1968 place call Kailua on the windward side of the island. I loved that show and I love its sequel also. rarely does a sequel live up to the original.
Definitely one of the best TV shows of all-time. Especially among cop and crime shows. It has a sort of timeless quality that enables entertaining viewing even today.

Jack Lord in the character of Steve mcgarrett brought the ultimate coolness in being a police officer many kids have grown up and gone into the profession because of this
When the helicopter show of Jack Lord on the Ilikai penthouse balcony was filmed, he and his wife were actually living there at the time. In his bedroom there, Jack had shelves lining the walls with 3/4" U-matic videotape cartridges of each "Five-0" episode. Funny story.....my family went to Hawaii in 1970 to visit my aunt in Honolulu. She lived in the hotel Ilikai shown on the show opening and knew one of the producers of the show. they were filming downtown at Lalani (sp?) palace so took us all down to watch. My aunt got to talking with her friend. I was 10 yrs old and was getting pushed aside here and there by my older brothers. I kept walking backwards as I got pushed out of the way and I ended up tripping on a thick power cable and was about to fall on my butt when I landed in someone’s lap. I was caught by a very nice man and my mom rushed over embarrassed to get me. Jack Lord handed me over to my mom smiling at me and saying that everyone trips on those cables so don’t worry about it. I was so embarrassed because my mom was making such a huge deal about it but I’ll never forget Mr. Lord being so nice and talking to me.

I grew up on Hawaii 5-0. I didn’t watch it in the first few seasons because I was a bit young for it, but I was watching by about season 4. Of course, I caught the earlier seasons in reruns. I loved the locations in Hawaii. It was like traveling to an exotic vacation location every week.
My favorite show. Had the privilege of living there for 5 yrs courtesy of Uncle Sam. I’m not one for bothering with ringtones to tell me who’s calling but I do have this theme as an overall ringtone and of course for my alarm. When my friend came to see me for 2 weeks we ate at Wo Fats & kept our chopsticks (even though I can’t use them). I still have one of them! Thanks for airing this.
Yes I am and still a long time fan of Hawaii Five-0... I wish that both the original and the re-make of the show were back on the air now...they were both in there own way classics....
The introduction was the highlights for me the music the thaitian dancer the girl on the beach , pure magic and of course jack Lord , in a class of his own the coolest cop totally a gifted human being, had the looks the talking and acting and what people don't know about jack Lord was a person who gave back to the community, I use to watch the show as a kid for the beautiful scenery of Hawaii very hard to replace cool cats like maggaret five-0 book him dano .
* @@MisterMikeTexas ~> McGarrett said "After all these years, Wo Fat, it will give me great pleasure to book you myself!" After commercial break we see Wo Fat in jail cell. McGarrett looks at him and says "Aloha, Wo Fat!" Wo Fat then pulls a hidden file out of a shoe & begins to file his nails. That is end of episode! ☺
@@WytZox1 Sounds a *HECK* of a lot better then in the reboot, where they had McGarret shoot and kill Wo Fat on the 100th episode...after finding out the two of them were half-brothers. Eventually the writers realized that they needed another 'big bad' so they wrote in Chin's psycho brother-in-law who blamed Chin for the death of his sister, believing that Chin chose his cousin Kono over his wife at the end of a previous season when the season ended on a cliffhanger with both in mortal danger. (The following season showed that Chin called Adam, Kono's sometime-boyfriend and former Yakuza boss, to save her while he tried to save his wife. Unfortunately, she died anyways.) So in order to get back and Chin, the brother-in-law decided to troment Kono and Adam. (Trust me, there were times that I was wondering "Just what are these writers smoking?")
The narrator mentioned is possible choices the role of Steve mcgarrett Robert Brown and the venerable Gregory Peck does anyone think they could have done as good a job or even better for myself Gregory Peck yes Robert Brown no
The original owner, the man who had the Ilikai hotel built, was a man named Chinn Ho, the show gave him a nod by naming one of the characters after him, the one Kam Fong played.
On our 6th trip to Hawaii, we finally saw the large woman statue shown in the opening. She is in the Punch Bowl, which is the National Cemetery of the Pacific. A very somber place. Notice the statues sad look. Visiting the Punch Bowl is every bit as inspiring as visiting Pearl. I found it more inspiring than Arlington National Cemetery.
@NE 1 went to school at Wheeler afb and high school in wahiwa loved it I remember checkers and pogo came on KGMB TV some good looking women and beaches uncle Sam said time to go, left out of honolulu airport landed at san francisco airport first I damn it's cold here ALOHA !!!
When I was in Jr. High my Dad was transferred to Hawaii (USMC) and when we left we always watched the show for places that we lived or visited during our time there. During a parade for the town we lived in (Makakilo) I got to meet a really super guy, Kam Fong Chun who played Chin Ho Kelly and autographed a picture for me. One thing you don't mention is that his son, Dennis Chun not only played "Officer Wade" in the original show in 74-5, but plays Sgt. Duke Lukela in the remake. He also had a part in the original Magnum, P.I. in '88, and did crossover duty in the current Magnum, P.I. in 2019! Kam Fong Chun also played a role in Magnum P.I. between '82 - '85. The Canadian ska-punk band "The Planet Smashers" uses elements of Hawaii Five-0 theme song as the beginning and part of the theme of their song "Missionary's Downfall" on their CD "Mighty".
I was today years old when I learned all this stuff about Hawaii five-0! We loved watching this show when I was kid. It was definitely a staple in our home.
Jack Lord was also a very accomplished artist. Many of his works were displayed in banks and other prominent buildings. After his death some of his pieces skyrocketed in price
Not only the theme song but the entire soundtrack album is magnificent. They finally released it on CD several years ago. I had that vinyl record when I was a kid growing up in the 70's. That album and Al Hirt's album of TV theme songs -- THE HORN MEETS THE HORNET -- were among the most-often-played records in my house. My mom once described the earliest time when my brother and I, just toddlers really, first heard the HAWAII-5-O theme playing and -- jacked up on sugary breakfast cereal -- ran around like crazy, jumping onto and off of the couch, that sort of thing. It was like the soundtrack of our lives as kids back then. Those were the days, with shows like JONNY QUEST having such kick-ass theme music. Composing exciting opening credits theme music seems to be a lost art nowadays. Are there any shows currently on TV or streaming that have music as smokin' as the HAWAII-5-O theme?
My favorite fact is that the actor who played Wo Fat used the stage name Khigh Dhiegh, which are the initials of his real name, Kenneth Dickerson. He was born in New Jersey.
I remember Khigh Dhiegh best from his appearance as Dr. Yen Lo in the film "The Manchurian Candidate" (1962). He made quite an impression in that film.
Reza Badiyi also served as assistant director on the classic horror film "Carnival of Souls" (where he was miscredited as 'Raza Badiyi'). Years ago someone uploaded 'Bored, She Hung Herself' to UA-cam, but it's long gone.
Did you know that in the late 1960's Bruce Lee was being considered for a role on Hawaii Five-O. I learned this from a long time friend who had been in several martial arts demonstrations with Lee around that thime.
While riding the bus back to Pearl in 74, my friend and i noticed a crowd gathering on the street next to the court house, downtown Honolulu. We got off at the next stop and walked back, just to be nosey. They were shooting a scene for 5-0 and there sat Mc Garrett and Dan-o in their director's chairs waiting on the stuntman to set up the cars they were to drive off in. I stood about three feet behind Jack while drank cool drinks in the shade. When time to shoot, they'd jump up and run to the inside of the building, whereas they would their mark and the director called, Action!. They both came running out, down the steps, jumped in a staged car and peel out around a corner. They did this maybe three or four times, all the while making time to talk to people while the crew was setting up for a re-take. I thought take was the highlite of my tour in Hawaii ,except when i almost drowned trying to body surf the north shore! I watched the episode sometime later, the title had something to do with diamonds, lady and her diamonds, the trouble with diamonds, ... now i have to look it up on you-tube!
The producers of Magnum pi asked Jack Lord to do a guest appearance as McGarrett but he declined. An article in TV Guide explained " We couldnt bookem Dano
@@randallulrich I was in charge of his section of the force, and therefore had a desk job for the most part. He sent his men out to do the street work, and was not intended to get into scuffles with the criminals.
In Sept. of 85 I was stationed at a training command on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. I was tasked to participate in the CINCPAC change of command that was held at Hickam Air Force Base right next to Pearl. My job, was to stand at a point in front of the grandstand and when a limo carrying an invited guest came driving up I was to extend my right hand out to indicate where the limo should stop and then open the door for the guest. One of those guests who stepped out when I opened the door was McGarrett himself, Jack Lord. I thought that was pretty cool. The first ship I was stationed on, the USS Whipple FF-1062 was featured in at least one episode of 5-0 that I know of, well before I ever came aboard in 1980.
The pride of my burgeoning record collection (3) back in '66 was the Ventures LP covering a bunch of TV show themes...Play the Batman Theme I think it was titled.
Loved, loved loved Hawaii Five-O. After I joined the Army in 1983, I had the luck to get sent to Hawaii on my first assignment, and was there nearly 7 years. Now Five-O had been off the air since 1980, but I knew all the locales and places etc. So when I arrived there in 1984 for a tour of duty, and I think it was June of 85 I was heading over to Hanauma Bay to do some snorkeling (which my friends and i did quite often)...on the way, we'd customarily stop at a Safeway near Kahala on the way not to far from there to pick up some frozen peas, and corn to feed the fish. As luck would have it, I had entered the Safeway store and was walking to the frozen section at the back and there in the dairy section, was Jack Lord, in a straw hat, picking up cheese. He looked a me and I thought I was gonna die - but I'd read that after retirement, he'd become a private person so I looked at him and said "Hello Mr. Lord" as I walked by. I got my frozen stuff and walked back he was still there, and he said "Hello" back and I stopped and said "I appreciate all your work", he said "Thank you" and asked if I was in the military (short hair cut) and I said yes, and he told me he'd been in the military, and then asked me where I was from, and I said Ohio, and asked me if I like Oahu. I told him yes and that I didn't want to disturb him any more and that I should be going and he thanked me and I thanked him and I was on my way.....just a nice, quite, considerate man. I'll never forget those few moments when I briefly met 'McgGarrett". Even now, I LOVE the new Hawaii Five-O but I avidly watch the original series when possible because there towards the end of that series, that's the Hawaii I know. On a different note, I once pulled up besides Tom Selleck outside Schofield Barracks in my Pinto. He was driving a yellow sports car and was headed to the polo fields, and I was in the left turn lane for Kunia Road...I pulled up beside the yellow car, and I looked to my right and there was Tom Selleck. He looked at me, I nodded at him and he nodded at me and then the light changed...LOL....I made my turn and he went straight on thru the light.....
I knew Don quite well. He was a really nice guy. He was a pilot in the service. He brought new local talent to his show and mentored them etc. Al Harrington had a great show too in the day.
Some of my favorite childhood memories involve sitting with my grandma and watching Hawaii 5-0 on TV in afternoon syndication. It was Hawaii 5-0, Perry Mason, and Wild Wild West. Early 80s must see TV for a 8 year old. Sadly I can't watch many of the old episodes anymore. Watching Jack Lord to tell the SWAT team to get behind him while he carries a .38 as they storm a drug dealers pad just makes my brain scream.
I loved this show as a kid growing up, and I can remember watching one of the episodes in a RAMADA INN hotel with my older brother while on vacation driving through Des Moines, IA with my parents and they had gone out to a nice dinner club and left my brother in charge of babysitting me and got to watch this and other shows of the day back in 71...
The first .mp3 file I ever owned/downloaded was the Hawaii 5-0 theme. I played it and some other songs on my laptop for my brother not long afterwards and told him mp3's were the future of music (this was back in the 90's when you still had to buy music in stores on CDs)
"Book'em Danno". I was so entranced by this series, and Michener's books about the South Pacific, and of course the movie of the same name; that I made my first trip to Hawaii in 1980. The last year of the show. I stayed at the Queen Kap, just off waikiki. Since 1980, I have visited the state almost every year. I had two honeymoons there, one at the Queen Kap, and one at the Kona Tiki on the Big Island. I also worked at the Kona Tiki for a short spell. The price of living, and the remoteness have prevented from my ever living there.
Thank you, This brings back so many memories. In regards to the Hawaii Five-O theme song, I've heard that composer Morton Stevens actually worked with Ventures on their version in the brass and percussion areas. Also, In the series pilot Cocoon- I believe McGarrett's friend Hennesy's apartment was also the penthouse where we see Jack Lord standing in the famous opening titles/music sequence because in the scene where McGarrett was at Hennesy's apartment you can see Diamond Head in the background in about the same spot.

Wo Fat restaurant at Hotel & Manukea closed several years ago. Too bad.
@@marklancaster2781 I didn’t know that. You’re right , it is a shame. When my friend cane to visit me we ate there. I still have one of my chopsticks!
Hawaii five o is my favorite. I am now 64. Watching it when i was still n high school and never miss an episode. Love every show.
Failed to mention that McGarrett finally captured & booked Wo Fat in series finale! ☺
Didn't he get away? I forget!

Jack Lord was a very accomplished artist as well, not many people know that
One of my favorite tv series. Miss this show. Mar 5,2021
What's your favorite episode, Vilma?
Sanford & Son used the Hawaii 50 theme song in one of their episodes,Driving on the beach. Very funny
The original owner, the man who had the Ilikai hotel built, was a man named Chinn Ho, the show gave him a nod by naming one of the characters after him, the one Kam Fong played.
I was looking through the comments and was going to add that fact myself.
Steve McGarrett’s hair itself made 600+ felony arrests

"That hair and his trusty sidekick -- Those Elvis Sideburns....har! That show Exuded Testosterone!!

My father and brother are buried there.
I'll always love the over path of the airplane , still cool forever . . . ' Book em Dano'
Stationed at scofield barracks army base saw the show filmed many a time the new one can't touch it ALOHA 😊👍😻
@NE 1 new 5o can't keep up with old one MAHALO AND ALOHA
All artwork goes up in price when the artist dies.
I have one of the fantasy boat series, ex-GF has another.
He is in the video that is presented at the Colonial Williamsburg Visitors Center.
Jack Lord was so handsome.
*The theme song hearing the drums beat extensively in the end is the one I like.*
I still have that Al Hirt album.
During Elvis Aloha from Hawaii Elvis points out Jack Lord in the audience
elvis must hav watched the show
@@seanodwyer8691 He did....either Priscilla or Linda Thompson mentioned Elvis' favorite TV shows.
Elvis and Jack Lord were old friends from the early-60's days when they both lived in Brentwood, California.
Jack Lord was incredibly handsome and charismatic 💞🥰🤗
@J Calhoun "The Frog". Got it. And that coming from the mouth of a citizen from the "civilized" side of the pond. Priceless.
As a kid , I thought "book em danno " was Hawaii's state motto.😁😁😁
My favorite fact is that the actor who played Wo Fat used the stage name Khigh Dhiegh, which are the initials of his real name, Kenneth Dickerson. He was born in New Jersey.
I believe he was Arabian or Egyptian - but looked Chinese.
I remember Khigh Dhiegh best from his appearance as Dr. Yen Lo in the film "The Manchurian Candidate" (1962). He made quite an impression in that film.
I love Mr Jack Lord
The Hawaii Five-O theme was used in the Australian comedy, The Dish, where it was humorously announced as the American National Anthem.
Great scene, great movie.
Great scene, great movie.
That’s interesting considering surfing is the number one sport in Australia.
It was also used in "Shrek 2".

Growing up in Hawaii I met jack lord, he was a nice down to earth guy
Both Richard Boone (Paladin on Have Gun Will Travel) and Jack Lord were cremated and their ashes were tossed into the waters off of Honolulu.
Hawaii’s beauty makes any actor look good!
Even Wo Fat?
You left out a sequence where McGarrett says “Book’em, Dan-o.” 🙁

The last part of the phrase "Murder One".

Reza Badiyi also served as assistant director on the classic horror film "Carnival of Souls" (where he was miscredited as 'Raza Badiyi'). Years ago someone uploaded 'Bored, She Hung Herself' to UA-cam, but it's long gone.
I can't believe this video never once included "Bookem Danno"
That's line I remember.
I agree.I remember Steve telling Chin to do the book-em-Chin.
McGarrett never said that line in the show. It’s like” Beam me up Scotty” often quoted, never used.
born in 1960, Hawaii Five-O was our favorite tv series. my mom adored Steve
Did you know that in the late 1960's Bruce Lee was being considered for a role on Hawaii Five-O. I learned this from a long time friend who had been in several martial arts demonstrations with Lee around that thime.
Thanks for sharing this trivia, Gonbei!
That would have been amazing
I met dan o and Danny most. In hi
Good show
Donny lol, he's still got it !
The producers of Magnum pi asked Jack Lord to do a guest appearance as McGarrett but he declined. An article in TV Guide explained " We couldnt bookem Dano

I'd read Jack Lord began showing signs of alzheimers & left acting.
Jack Lord always had great looking suits.
Mostly, but toward the end of the series in Seasons 10 and 11, they put him in pink suits and a few suits that looked like leisure suits. Yuk.
his wife made a lot of his clothes
And if you notice, those suits were dirt-proof, bullet-proof, and wrinkle-free. Never a smudge or tear or anything out of place with those suits.
@@randallulrich I was in charge of his section of the force, and therefore had a desk job for the most part. He sent his men out to do the street work, and was not intended to get into scuffles with the criminals.
Thank for doing this because I was certain that I’d heard words to the theme song at least once in my life.
Lived in hawaii back then including the magnum pi days also. Fun to see them filming once in awhile.
In Sept. of 85 I was stationed at a training command on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor.
One of my favorite TV shows.
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
The Ventures were my favorite band back in the 60's.
The pride of my burgeoning record collection (3) back in '66

a bunch of TV show themes...Play the Batman Theme I think it was titled.
I had forgotten about the banned episode, and that lyrics were added to the theme song.
Hawaii 5-0 was 1st to have a BLUE LIGHT on the patrol vehicle.
At first I thought I had commented on this at some time.
I had the pleasure of meeting Don Ho in Hawaii in 1989 😍
I knew Don quite well.
Why?
That's why they call it escapism and entertainment. You're not supposed to use your brain!
Jack Lord almost got the role of Captain James T. Kirk in "Star Trek", but he wanted part ownership of the show, which Gene Roddenberry refused...
I heard he put on the tights.. looked in a mirror and said no xxxx way am i gonna do this, or words to that effect. walking out.
Thank you! Certainly one of my favorite shows of all time, really appreciate the update!
I love Hawaii 5-0 it's my favorite show ever
Thank you, This brings back so many memories. In regards to the Hawaii Five-O theme song, I've heard that composer Morton Stevens actually worked with Ventures on their version in the brass and percussion areas. Also, In the series pilot Cocoon- I believe McGarrett's friend Hennesy's apartment was also the penthouse where we see Jack Lord standing in the famous opening titles/music sequence because in the scene where McGarrett was at Hennesy's apartment you can see Diamond Head in the background in about the same spot.
No, the apartment in "Cocoon" is not in the Ilikai Hotel; it's in a much smaller condo that's next to Kapiolani Park, at the foot of Diamond Head.
@@hebneh Thanks for the info.

You on drugs, boy.
Hawaii Five-O was also one of my favorites.!
A song has words, no words it is not a song, it is a tune.
I think this song is in the key of Z minus. I play the incarnations on my guitar, very difficult.
I suppose you have to sing to make it a song. It is an instrumental.
Don Ho made a song with a slowed down version of the theme. Check it out on UA-cam.
