- Screwdriver
- Toner black or cyan or magenta or yellow for use in Brother HL3140

Resetting the cartridge from the printer menu
Resetting the cartridge from the printer menu is much easier, it requires no disassembly and it even works with starter cartridges. You can avoid to install a reset gear on a starter cartridge. Note that on the recently released starter Brother toner cartridge, the new drive shaft configuration prevents users from installing a reset gear at all.
To access printer's reset menu:
For HL-3140CW HL-3150CDN HL-3150CDW HL-3170CDW:
- Open the front cover of the printer.
- With the front cover open, simultaneously press “SECURE” and “CANCEL” buttons.
- The reset menu appear on the display.
- Scroll through the menu to select a color and yield to reset.
- The display will read "ACCEPTED". The reset is completed.
For DCP-9020CDW, MFC-9130CW, MFC-9140CDN, MFC-9330CDW, MFC-9340CDW
- If an error message appears on the display, press “X CANCEL” button to show the main menu.
- Press “Fax” button to make the numeric keypad visible. Then, locate (do not press) the “Asterisk” (Star) button on the numeric keypad. Remember its location because it will not be lit up later when needed.
- Press “Home” button to return to the main menu.
- Open the front cover of the printer and press and hold the unlit Asterisk (Star) button for 5 seconds. Reset menu appear on the display.
- Scroll through the menu to select a color and yield to reset.
- On the display appear "ACCEPTED". The reset is completed.

Great advice, thanks. It should be noticed that the "cover" has to be ALL THE WAY open for the "asterisk press" for 5 seconds to be accepted, and the reset screen to appear. At least, that was my experience.. ":

Ok, it seems you were right, the toner powder somehow was contaminated and causing faded prints.The steps I took to fix was to check the developer by swapping with known good cartrdige- good.Emptied the old cartridge and blew out old toner at open air making sure it is bone dry & clean.Put some left over toner (25g) and assembled (faded prints still).Opened NEW toner powder and added another 30g. This seemed to solve the problem.
* One issue I had was I broke off half the seal plug and now it is inside the cartridge, not sure if it's a good idea to continue using it that way or not. Anyway, I'm using a NEW replacement toner for now. Definitely a learning curve vs working with inkjets.
Anyway, this time I've sealed the remaining toner in a plastic bag with some silica packs in the bag to absorb moisture-- I don't think the guys who sold this toner were expecting users to keep some powder left over as the bottle cap is NOT perfectly AIR TIGHT. Thanks for your help!
I had a small piece of the seal plug break and fall into the cartridge. It worked fine until the piece got stuck in the roller, and damaged the cartridge, it is no longer usable.
You can try to clean the roller with isopropypic alcohol

This is one of the few videos showing the disassembly of the developer roller for cleaning and other parts cleaning in addition to toner removal & replacement. How many more refills can be accomplished using this method vs just empyting & refiling?
+Tim Smith Using this method you can use the cartridge 3-4 times. without cleaning the components 2 times, in Brother technology the waste toner ends in the toner cartridge so you'll have low quality print

No, indeed all Brother toner powders are almost the same
When it talks about the number of grams to put in, is that the amount put in by the factory? Can I put more in if I have it? Can you near fill the cartridges, or does that make issues?
the cartridge will send a toner low message after a number of copies, not important how many toner there is into the cartridge. the waste toner ends into the toner cartridge, so the quality of the toner inside the cartridge wlll become low

Probably you have a starter cartridge, in this cartridge there is no reset gear. You'll find reset instructions in the description of the video

Printer worked very well after the 2nd filling. 10 days later, I unplugged it for 5 hours, all of a sudden I get “Replace Toner” popup . What should I do?
I donìt know. itìs strange. try reset the counter from the printer menu. may be the reset gear is low yield type, and after 1000-1400 prints you get the error message

Hello, thank you for this. The only thing that did not work as described is the resetting through the printer. When I press "Secure" and "Cancel" at the same time, I do not get the reset menu, and am not able to reset it. Looking into resetting manually now.

Well, the video talks about doing it through the printer settings. But I tried that repeatedly a dozen times and it did not do anything.

I have an HL-3170CDW and I've always used the printer's menu to reset the toner carts. and the drums too. Follow the instructions VERY CLOSELY.
my prints are faded at 3500 copies.. I believe this is due to cleaning the developer roller w isopropyl alcohol. could there be another possible reason?
No, the alcohol do not damage the developer roller. After 3500 copies may be the developer roller or the doctor blade is worn, or the toner is too old

The foam roller has to bring the toner to the toner roller. If damaged, part of the foam roller could daamage the toner cartridge
@@viandant5 i cannot find any replacement for this. I tried the cardboard cleaning I didnt know that there's foam roller there. I went too deep and scratched the foam.

@@davids1681 You waste toner. The cartridge will only use around 80-100 grams of toner

In Italia se ti vedono pulire le cartucce come quel operaio che la puliva fuori dal capannone senza nessuna norma di sicurezza, avrebbero arrestato il titolare e fatto chiudere l'azienda. Non vi sembra di esagerare. E' tutto troppo semplice!!! Immagino come stampa!!! Avete preso una cartuccia compatibile perchè semplice da togliere il tappo, fatelo con l'originale. Come al solito, come fà a resettare il toner con l'ingranaggio messo così?
