The BIZARRE DRAMA Between UCLA and Missouri

  • Even though Missouri and UCLA are in two separate conferences and have not played each other in football since 1966, as it turns out, the two schools absolutely despise each other due to a 2000 incident. And the reason for that? It has to do with a proposed home-and-home beginning in 2001 that Missouri tried to back out of just months before it was supposed to happen, even though it was scheduled all the way back in 1987. And to say that UCLA was furious about Missouri's antics would be putting it lightly. This is the breakdown of that drama

Here's what happened with all of those other non-conference games scheduled...
4-game series against Florida State beginning in 1993--never happened (in fact, they still have never played the Seminoles)
Home-and-home against Clemson starting in 1995--Mizzou's home was played in 1996 while Clemson's home wasn't played until 2000, both teams won their respective home games
Home-and-home against Texas Tech starting in 1995--played at Texas Tech in 1995 and wouldn't play the Red Raiders until 1998...in Texas Tech. Fortunately, the Tigers hosted their next game in 1999, being 2-1 during that time (they won the back-to-back games).
Home-and-home against Washington starting in 1997--never happened (in fact, they still have never played the Huskies)
Home-and-home against Ohio State starting in 1997--that actually happened, with Mizzou hosting the first game in '97 and Ohio State hosting the following year. The Tigers lost both.
4-game series against Michigan State starting in 2000--That ended up being a home-and-home with Mizzou hosting the first game in 2000 and MSU hosting the game the following year. Spartans won both.

Not surprising. It's very common for changed circumstances to cause games to be moved or even for deals to be cancelled. But Missouri should have contacted UCLA after the move to the Big 12 and discussed it then. To make the change less than a year beforehand was really a dick move.
Florida State joined the ACC in 1991 and probably cancelled that deal because of doing so.
Texas Tech would have changed because after 1995, that was a conference game. The Big 8 and part of the SWC merged to form the Big 12 after the '95 season. They probably just stuck to the contract for '95 and then the Big 12 handled the scheduling from then on out.

Fun fact: Michigan and Notre Dame agreed back in 2019 to play a home-and-home in 2033 and 2034. That was 14 and 15 years in advance.

Two words: Tyus Edney, oh wait, that's basketball!
By the way, MN and UNC scheduled a home and home about 10 years into the future and then recently cancelled.

After watching this video, I remember a time when USF was supposed to visit Eastern Michigan and host Baylor in 2003 and both dropped USF only months before the season. The best my Bulls could do was schedule Charleston Southern.
Bringing this back to Mizzou, it was supposed to visit Memphis in 2023, but by 2022, it tried to back out of that end of the home-and-home agreement after hosting Memphis in 2018. Instead of playing in Memphis, the 2023 game will take place in St. Louis. Mizzou should be ashamed of itself.

This is very similar to when the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) decided in 2000 to put North & South Korea in the same qualifying group for the 2010 World Cup. To be more precise, the AFC scheduled North Korea to be in South Korea's group should they have advanced through the two rounds of Asian qualifying before the final round. The reason why the AFC decided to do this was because at the time tensions between the two Koreas were thawing somewhat & thought both nations could play each other without any controversy. However when the two Koreas did eventually play each other in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers in 2009, there was major controversy mainly because the North absolutely refused to play the South if the game took place in Seoul & if South Korea's flag & anthem were used. This resulted in FIFA getting involved by moving the two qualifying matches to Shanghai China & banning both nations from using their flag & anthem during the pre-match ceremonies. The two countries tied in the first match while the South won the second 1-0 & both nations qualified for the 2010 World Cup.

Mizzou did the same thing to Iowa. It was reported before 2010 Insight bowl, Iowa vs Mizzou, originally Mizzou was supposed to play at Iowa in 2005 season opener but backed out. Reason was Gary Pinkel wanted to not face the Big Ten defending champs because he was rebuilding the program….

ND knows who their 5 ACC opponents are until at least 2037 and that they play NC State on 10/3... Navy would be 6 (that is unofficial, but I don't see that game ever being cancelled unless ND goes to a conference... and even then they would probably want that game).

When USC left the ACC in July 1971, they continued scheduling NC State in a home-and-home in football every year until the Gamecocks joined the SEC and started competing in the league in the fall of 1992. With adding all the league games, there was no room on the schedule to play the Wolfpack in the last year of the contract. It took until the 1999 season for Carolina to make it up to Raleigh to fulfill the final year of the deal.

Yes the Big XII started out as a merger between the Big 8 and four schools (schools, not teams) from the SWC.
Makes you wonder if the Universities of Colorado, Missouri and Nebraska, and aTm knew what a bully the University of Texas would become if they would have agreed to the merger.

Key word is “was going to play Kansas.” Mizzou backed out Friday and said they refuses to play KU in the Liberty Bowl.

Here's how I know how little you know:
Missouri's excuse is perfectly valid. The Big 8 only had 7 regular season games with 4 out of conference games.
The 1996 merger of the Big Eight and Southwest Conference increased that to 8 with now only 3 out of conference spots.
Mizzou also was now facing a different caliber of schedule in the XII with the addition of Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, all 3 of which won the Southwest Conference at the end of its run and appeared in major bowks with A&M appearing in back to back Cotton Bowls, Tech in one Cotton Bowl and Texas in 1996 when they won the Big XII in the first season. UCLA who had appeared in 2 Rose Bowls in the 90s would have added to an already difficult schedule when you throw in Nebraska during their dynasty, Colorado, who had been to 2 Orange Bowls and 1 Fiesta, Kansas, and Kansas State, both of whom won 10 games in 1995.
Its not hard to see why they changed, and I don't think anyone in Missouri's athletic department banked on what would happen 10 years after scheduling nor was it the same people.
This practice happens a lot when conference realignment occurs and is not uncommon.
