You are the only person that cuts half off the mono To alow for half the thickness of the truss like me ,I always ask that to every one I do a truss roof with

Looking good. Cutting the hips in by hand does add an awful lot of interest to the job. I wouldn't mind really if mine came like that it would relieve the boredom. Not likely to happen. Most Aussie chippies can't cut and pitch. So big timber meccano kit it is. And I saw the weather prediction for our end of the country was up to 40C. What is happening in the UK. People will be dropping like flies. You will have 12 months of sunshine next like Qld.

Del, I know it is your years of experience that makes it look easy but I take my hat off you that hand cut section of the roof is fantastic; if it were me then it would take a month of Sundays to work out the angles and I would be measuring once and cutting 10 times to get it right. Well done mate and it is nice to see the young'n taking time out to help his old dad out and away from the screens! Is he looking to follow in your footsteps? a s I don't think he could ask for a better, more professional chippie to learn from.

Quick tip on how I do my hip cuts. I do both 45 cuts from the top. Using a sharp pencil mark your first hip plumb line, then measure the thickness of your timber square off of that line and mark another hip plumb cut line, the cut through the furthest one on the 45 the come back and cut the other one. No need to flip the hip over. Give it a go let me know what you think!

We use the middle mono to position the first full truss and never cut the mono.I only put a one way splay cut on the top of my hip and clap it against the mono too. It's probably the wrong thing to do technically but a lot of our hips are about 8m long and i think half the thickness of a hip out top to bottom is fair enough. You ought to have videoed changing your adjustable square from common to hip cut cos a lot of joiners don't know the beauty of this feature.

Is it worth jacking up that truss to take the deflection out? Then once the roof is complete, chances are it will hold, you could also add hangers(timber) and binders(old school ceiling spa style) from the hips to add rigidity? Ive also got my hands on some german screws designed for metal joist hangers and metal timber connections, they are a life saver in tight spots!

Hi Del, great video, good that you have good help. Does your son want to be a carpenter? You said you couldn’t birds mouth the jack rafters. As the weight of the roof is on the nails, as I assume they didn’t quite sit on the plate. Do you have to put brackets or clips on at a later date? I love your roof videos as I still learn so much from you. I have done a few roofs in the past and get by but I’m a bit slow as I check everything again and again. I had to put a trussed roof on a local hospital. I was pleased the way it went but I could have been a bit faster (Nobody moaned) and my mate didn’t know any more then me. They were big so we had a crane go lift them in. Thanks Del.

We had a big valley set last year that a) didn't match the pitch of the main trusses and b) didn't even match each other. Spent about an hr doubting our technique (of 20+yrs!) Because we didn't think they could vary by as much as they did with modern manufacturing techniques! The most frustrating thing in the world

Also, buy yourself a ppn nailer. We didn't think we could justify the extortionate price they think they can charge, but had a job a month ago with 120 pieces of metal work... Did them in about an hr and it had pretty much paid for itself in 1 job.

@@thetallcarpenter honestly it's up there with the 1st fix for time saving. we got the DeWalt so the gasless nails were cheaper. Apart from the plasterboard collator I can't think of a tool that has saved us more time when we're on a price (not to mention the bashing the fingers don't get!)
During my limited cut roof experiance I have never not needed to cut a birdsmouth. Thats all the tile weight being carried by the ring nails and the rafter brackets? Respectfuly Mike
Hi Michael🖐There's little difference between how the rafter is fixed at the bottom to how it is fixed at the top (to the hip), and the nails have fantastic holding power. The entire weight of one end of this roof sits in a joist hanger that is nailed to a single truss, this truss is then just nailed to 2 more trusses to form a tripple, at no more than 600mm centres🤯

If you consider the weight on an individual rafter nailing through the ceiling joist is fine. If the tiles were heavy enough to make this move the jacks would be sliding down the hip.

I've fitted a few trusses myself and all been out, Factory fitted on a jig how can they be out ? The traditional in me would a hand cut roof been easier I've worked with a few people and they ' I don't have problems, I have solutions ' good work getting over the issues, I would of been 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😆

Hi Del, great video, good that you have good help. Does your son want to be a carpenter? You said you couldn’t birds mouth the jack rafters. As the weight of the roof is on the nails, as I assume they didn’t quite sit on the plate. Do you have to put brackets or clips on at a later date? I love your roof videos as I still learn so much from you. I have done a few roofs in the past and get by but I’m a bit slow as I check everything again and again. I had to put a trussed roof on a local hospital. I was pleased the way it went but I could have been a bit faster (Nobody moaned) and my mate didn’t know any more then me. They were big so we had a crane go lift them in. Thanks Del.
Hi Jerry🖐 Those rafters each have 4 nails fixing them to the sides of the ceiling joists which is more than enough and actually no different to how they are fixed to the hips👍I don't see taking a bit longer to complete a job properly as an issue, and as long as you, and everyone else was happy with the work you did, then what does how long it took matter👊Thanks for watching😎Cheers Del

i'd have done the same as Del. Be fine fived through the ceiling joist.
We had a big valley set last year that a) didn't match the pitch of the main trusses and b) didn't even match each other. Spent about an hr doubting our technique (of 20+yrs!) Because we didn't think they could vary by as much as they did with modern manufacturing techniques!

As the joiner doing the roof everything has to be correct or the roofers won’t be able to get over it we do the hard work roofers take the cream lol

Also, buy yourself a ppn nailer. We didn't think we could justify the extortionate price they think they can charge, but had a job a month ago with 120 pieces of metal work... Did them in about an hr and it had pretty much paid for itself in 1 job.

@@thetallcarpenter honestly it's up there with the 1st fix for time saving. we got the DeWalt so the gasless nails were cheaper. Apart from the plasterboard collator I can't think of a tool that has saved us more time when we're on a price (not to mention the bashing the fingers don't get!)
The Bostitch strapshot pneumatic nailer is on my list, paired with my flexvolt compressor I believe it will be a winning combo, 👍🔨🇮🇪

During my limited cut roof experiance I have never not needed to cut a birdsmouth. Thats all the tile weight being carried by the ring nails and the rafter brackets? Respectfuly Mike
Hi Michael🖐There's little difference between how the rafter is fixed at the bottom to how it is fixed at the top (to the hip), and the nails have fantastic holding power. The entire weight of one end of this roof sits in a joist hanger that is nailed to a single truss, this truss is then just nailed to 2 more trusses to form a tripple, at no more than 600mm centres🤯

If you consider the weight on an individual rafter nailing through the ceiling joist is fine. If the tiles were heavy enough to make this move the jacks would be sliding down the hip.

I've fitted a few trusses myself and all been out, Factory fitted on a jig how can they be out ?
The traditional in me would a hand cut roof been easier
I've worked with a few people and they ' I don't have problems, I have solutions ' good work getting over the issues, I would of been 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬😆
