Everton are due to move into their new stadium in 2024. With a 52,000 capacity that sits on the River Mersey, it will bring new life to fans of one of the longest serving clubs in the Premier League.
But the area it's being built, Bramley-Moore dock, has a troubling past that needs to be reflected upon and recgonised.
Written by Simon Hughes and illustrated by Philippe Fenner, we look at the history of John Bramley-Moore and the docks that the Toffees will call their new home.

or simply Everton Stadium?
Something incorporating "Mersey" would also be quite fitting, but given that Anfield is more or less nicknamed "Merseyside" (if I'm not mistaken), it's probably not a good idea.
EDIT: But I guess the stadium name will be sold off anyway, so it will probably be something along the lines of 出賣你的靈魂-Stadium.

The irony is it will probably be named after some multi National company that’s currently engaged in dubious labour and environmental practices.

I'm sure you agree that it wouldn't be great if all the streets in Berlin that were still named after famous Nazis and their triumphs - changing the names of these streets didn't 'change history', it merely recognised that current society doesn't want to celebrate those people in the way past societies did
The International Slavery Museum is part of the Maritime Museum on the Albert Dock, the exhibits were there before 2007. The video suggests that was some watershed moment for the city but it was just a new name. Really worth the visit by the way.
Liverpool had long been on my bucket list, but knowing that this gem of a place exists is all the more reason for me to go.

its an intresting one, hard to blame the people of today for events two hundred years ago but I think if Everton came out acknowledgeing that the land they are building on is developed by slaves it would do a lot for them. And then of course, rename it
When bringing these bits of history up, people are almost never blaming the people of today. They're requesting acknowledgment and recognition of the wrongdoings of the past and the effects they might have today, if any

Everton have stated they'll commemorate the name of the dock in some form, hence the name change to Everton Stadium Project'. It won't be whitewashed. It isn't Everton's style.
Shame the reporter responsible didn't ask the club to comment. Hack piece at best.

I originally clicked on it, thinking it'd be about the litany of failed stadium proposals from Peter Johnson's Kirkby Golf Course idea to Walton Hall Park, with Kings Dock and Destination Kirkby in between. Instead we have an article about an 18th Century mayor with some shady dealings, who the plot of land Everton are building on is named after..

@@aidygooner I mean we recently had a whole video dedicated to footballers getting a good night's sleep. A video about San Marino, their constant struggles, the players that play for the nation (record appearances and goalscorer), their famous first point in a draw against Turkey in 93, and their win against Liechtenstein in 2004 would all make for an interesting short video essay. They're essentialy the biggest underdog in world football, and everyone loves an underdog story.

@@sirwinstonchurchill2052 I think I can see what you're saying and I agree with most of your points. The simple question is, can it be avoided when a football club chooses that name for their stadium? Is it better to not know anything about it- simply calling it?
You are completely right that history is potentially here for anyone who wants to learn it, but we live in a world where that simply doesn't happen. For even the few that will learn a bit and then check some more, it is worth it.
As for certain agendas, I'm not entirely sure what agenda Tifo represents, but I don't think someone's political views will change drastically from this video. Most people don't even have close to concrete opinions, and without being challenged by a bit of knowledge, they won't have any chance of thinking- they'll simply consume.

As an Everton fan, I hope this appropriately handled.
Every big city in the world over 200 years old was involved in slavery in one form or another.
Ahistorical nonsense, I guess the blueprints for Stephensons rocket were found in Ghana and the blast furnace in South Africa. Bristol having 95 percent of Europes zinc played no part or Cornish tin or the skills of Glaswegian dockers and ship builders. The multiple ports along the coastline the temperate climate. Why does no one asks why Africa was so vulnerable, why did it not have it's own navy?

Great video to comment on sports washing without sounding too preachy.
Some consider names irrelevant, but I think it's essential to properly name any component of infrastructure anywhere around the world whether they had colonial past or current conditions of autocratic and single tribe rule.
Saying this is something from a long forgotten past doesn't mean it should be left as it is, and this excuse should make it less of a problem to change the names anyway.
People point to the Middle East for sportswashing but refuse to condemn virtually every major US sport for being historically and institutionally racist, or that virtually every English,Scottish,Welsh and certainly Irish team have roots in slavery, bigotry, parochialism, bolshevism and the class system.

Because it's not really related to Everton's New Stadium? the only thing relating John Bramley-Moore and Everton's Stadium is that the Stadium were built on the Harbour.

BM & BMD’s history needs acknowledging and then we really have to move on. I for one can’t believe either of these names will be included in the eventual naming rights. Right now the club is referring to it as the Everton Stadium so it’s already moving the narrative. Let’s not forget Liverpool losing its heritage status included the new stadium build so the historical status of the site was deemed important despite its connections to BM.
EFC has already done a fantastic job of preserving the structure and the plans for the pump house and some of its infrastructure are well advanced. The museum has done a great job of acknowledging the history and links to slavery and I hope we (EFC), do something on a smaller scale at the old pump house site which is well underway to being fully restored.
I think it is absolutely fitting that the site is being repurposed for a football stadium which is so important to the city and it’s more acceptable history. A stadium for the people at the heart of a regenerated project to bring the entire area back into life for the people. Of course the already rich owners will get richer on the back of it but that is not as important as bringing new history and new life to the area.

I doubt you'll find an Everton fan who doesn't agree that Bramley-Moore's name shouldn't be used or associated with the stadium. I just hope that the sponsor the stadium ends up being named after isn't too garish - otherwise I feel like people will default to calling it Bramley-Moore anyway.
Yes unfortunately the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium rolls off the tongue a bit too easily and has been informally used to refer to the stadium throughout the whole planning and building process and with an unsuitably garish sponsored name, I fear that the name Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium, despite never being an official name associated with the project, will become the de facto nomenclature for referring to the stadium

The Dock should still be named after him but with a plaque explaining who he was or a monument to anti - slavery so the dark history is remembered and not repeated.
The stadium shouldn't be named after him though as the stadium has nothing to do with the man or the vile actions he allowed. Hopefully they can find a better name.
This isn’t anything to do with football or Everton - as long as they don’t rename their stadium after him of course. You could go back thousands of years and I’m sure bad things have taken place in many areas where stadium have been built.

I’m glad to see Everton is working to find a solution to acknowledge the role slavery played in the fortunes of John Bramley-Moore upon whom the dock where their new stadium is being built is named.
More broadly the wealth and prosperity of places like Liverpool and Glasgow was built on the exploration and suffering of slavery and colonialism. Even more broadly capitalism all the way to the modern day follows that same model where a privileged few get extremely wealthy off the exploitation and subjugation of the many below them.
The very least Everton could do n is acknowledge the dark past of Bramley-Moore that he has tried during his lifetime to whitewash. Without actually celebrating him and what he did (something that naming a dock after him kinda does)
With our joke of a mayor, I'm sure they'll be plaques all over it. It's funny that you mention the Irish, as since they made the biggest contribution to Liverpool, there's no mention in any plaques or any museums to it.

Whilst I get a lot of this with statues, and have had to take a piece of land available to them, and to be fair in many cities. The lack of building land is a much bigger issue in modern times than what went on 150 years ago.

Everton's stadium is 53,000 in capacity. Way too small for such a club. The club say it can be expanded to 60,000. The cost would be off the scale to later extend for an extra 7,000, rather than building in the 7,000 at the onset. This is assuming planing permission would be granted to expand the stadium, which would be unlikely in such a confined waterlocked site. The Bramley Moore site is just too small, and its waterlocked location makes it difficult to expand as space is limited for crowd dispersal in panic situations.
Transport provision is poor with the nearest Merseyrail metro station a good 15-20 minutes walk away - a small station that is unable to make a great impact on shifting a 53,000 crowd. The bottom line is that Bramley Moore is a poor site for a stadium.
Everton had the choice of another near dockside location at Garston - yards from Garston Docks. Adjacent to the docks is the substantial Garston gasworks site being vacant and cleared for a long time. It could fit two 60,000 seater stadia, but clearly one 60,000 seater with large exterior concourse with fans facilities for sure. Garston has an old world charm about it.
Garston's transport access is exceptional having many dual carriageways converge on the district. About 500 yards from the site is the the 6-platform Liverpool South Parkway station linked by dual carriageway Horrocks Ave. Horrocks Ave would be a _Wembley Way_ to the stadium. South Parkway can shift the fans for sure. Multi-platform Wembley Park station shifts 35,000 per hour as a guide. The new Mersey Gateway bridge is not far from the site with road access to the M56 and M62 easy. The site even has an airport next door. How good do you want it! If it easy to get to with top facilities, then fans will come. The amazingly successful Emirates stadium has proven that, being surrounded by 27 mass transit platforms. The city of Liverpool has a mass-transit metro, yet the mayor and Everton F.C. ignored it. Unbelievable.
The mayor Liverpool at the time, Joe Anderson, pushed Bramley Moore onto the new Everton owner, an Iranian, Fahad Moshiri. The inarticulate Anderson was arrested on corruption charges. Farhad does not have the historic feeling for the city being persuaded that Bramley Moore Dock was the site for Everton F.C., and that the council would pull out all stops to get through planning permissions - they even offered financial assistance. A true Liverpolitan with a feeling for the city's history probably would have thought differently.
Large parts of historic Liverpool were recognised as a World Heritage Site by the UN (UNESCO). Bramley Moore Dock was inside the World Heritage zone. Because of the distain shown by the city towards the historic sites, under Anderson's stewardship, Liverpool was stripped of World Heritage Status, with UNESCO actually mentioning the construction of the out of place stadium. The largest stripping of the status by UNESCO - ever. A whole city stripped. A true embarrassment to the city and the UK. Saying that, British prime minister Boris Johnson could have stepped in to rescue the embarrassing situation but did nothing.
Everton could have had all it wanted at Garston and the city retaining its World Heritage Status. A win, win. But both lost out big time.
The docks sat derelict for decades. The projected increase of both jobs and tourism to the north of Liverpool is well worth the loss of a status which has little to no effect on tourism in this great city. Nobody came to visit the dock before now, the dock walls and the hydraulic tower are being restored I don’t see what the issue is as it benefits everyone.

Read what I wrote. The Garston site was perfect for a stadium. The city should have directed Everton to the site. Everton should have had the sense to see the site was for them and went for it. If the dumb US owners of Liverpool had sense, they would have gone for the Garston site rather than spend a fortune on updating inadequate Anfield.

Something that struck me when I was watching HITC Sevens latest piece on Qatar (The WC) - Most of the western countries have a pretty murky past with Slaves and who built up those countries? Its the same thing in different variations, but because we did it first its okay?
I don't think there's any argument that it's 'OK' for us to have done it. Our ancestors made these mistakes and we live with the consequences - both good and bad. Thanks to that, we should know better now to not support countries and regimes that are doing the same. We should learn from our history and do our best to ensure it's not repeated.

@@WGK90 But they're not in the past, it's a mistake they're making now, that we have the ability to call out to help actual people suffering now. And in cases like this it's more individuals calling out Qatar, who probably also have complaints about the monarchy. A person isn't morally responsible for the country they were born in, even if they benefit from its stature, cause they had no choice in that.

What an utterly pointless video. Nothing to do with football in the slightest, Everton just happen to be moving to a location that was named after a bad guy who died 150 years ago. If they're not naming the stadium after the dock (which they aren't) then the history of the site has absolutely nothing to do with Everton or football in general. Baffling.
The article never mentioned that the stadium was the final straw in UNESCO stripping the city of its World Heritage Status.
@@johnburns4017 It was a derelict wasteland providing nothing to humanity. Liverpool is my second favourite city in England (after my home city). Regeneration is what has made the city what it is today. If the site was in use then fair enough preserve it, but it was abandoned, derelict, rotting and serving absolutely no purpose for the past 30 odd years.
This new ground for Everton will do a lot more for the people of Liverpool than some rotting old dock. Nobody visits Liverpool for some UNESCO status or to see this site as it used to exist.

The 1848 Bramley Moore Dock was a *fully operational dock* until the pumps came filling it in with sand from the river. The Svitzer tug fleet had its base there with two quays for sand dredgers, with sand processed on the quays. Trucks were constantly in and out of the dock gates transporting the sand. It was commercially viable.
The World Heritage Status was to direct the city to rebuild to its heritage. A heritage important the world. The philistine inarticulate mayor did not have a clue. He was arrested under corruption charges. UNESCO said a stadium was not within the history or in the agreement for the site.
The World Heritage Site done properly would have created another Amsterdam out of the interconnected dock waters, of world renown. But the philistine mayor had a stinking sewage plant built on Wellington Dock and a concrete stadium next door on Bramley Moore Dock - both on the World Heritage Site. No kidding.

@@johnburns4017 You’re twisting so many facts. It wasn’t fully operational whatsoever and there where no plans to turn the docks into “another Amsterdam.” It was sitting derelict in a deprived area of the city and the plan Everton and the council have put in place is going to economically revive that area. Also the Mayor was arrested over allegations completely separate to the stadium and I’m pretty sure he’s no longer being investigated.
