Hey wizard! Found your channel through Hoovie. Was a diesel/heavy equipment mechanic for a short time and I enjoy watching this kind of content! Awesome channel!
a huge no. of European and domestic cars you have to drop the fuel tank out the bottom of the car and in so many cases that means rear beam down after disconnected the brake lines and cables. Pain in the arse its why u see soo many on ebay etc....with fuel issues, wont run or idel correctly. my last three cars had fueling issues (all over 200k) now two of them it was some trime out & removal the rear seats oh look handy little acess hole in the floor to get to the pump. 3rd car was a drop the tank job so she went on ebay and lucky for me I pretty much got my money back on the car as I think the guy needed it as a parts car making it valuable to him & others. if either of the other two had been like that I would of evay or junked them both.
What I love about your videos is the way you talk at a real level and not smoke and mirrors looking down on people. Look forward to more over coming weeks, keep safe from uk.
I feel like that with supercars they are designed around the engine and transmission, and is fairly easy to work on because of that, but regular cars have engines and such crammed into a pre designed body.
Yeah a lot of people get iffy when they hear "Engine out service" But a lot of these cars are designed so you drop the whole cradle super easily, do the work then just put it all back in as an assembly.
Car wizard i did my course in car mechanic and now i'm a machinist and keep mechanic as a hobby. I just wanna tell you that you're so professionnal that i can only congrats you for being that. Watching working with passion is a delight.
Watching you fight that Camaro to drop its tank took me back to a '97 Lesabre I owned some years back. When the fuel pump went bad, I wasn't about to try to drop the tank, so I cut an access hole in the trunk floor. Upon reassembly I used that shiny metal tape that people use to make exhaust systems sound better. Last year I had to change the fuel pump on my 2000 Lesabre. It was nice to see a factory access plate in place.
Thank you very much for the Ferrari 550 video and your comments, I am a Kiwi from New Zealand and have both bipolar disorder and anxiety and with the state of the world right now it is always great to watch and enjoy your videos. You and Hoovie are the best and hopefully some day in the future would dearly like to thank you personally be it in the states or here in NZ. All the very best to you and Mrs Wizard and your family and friends.
What a beautiful, beautiful car. One of my favorite Ferraris. Great to see an American mechanic who doesn't need to trash European vehicles to feed his ego. Let's keep an open mind. It's only nuts and bolts. When you're a real mechanic you can work on anything.
Wizard, you hit the nail on the head, "Keep an open mind". Nothing designed by man (few exceptions), cannot be repaired. I worked in an emissions test lab where we assisted Weber with EPA compliance of their EFI systems. Very primitive, used a breadboard with pot resistors and an oscilloscope to set injector pulse width and ignition timing. No software, yet. I also pulled a cylinder head on a Ferrari 512 BB that had a factory porosity. It was gray market car, so Ferrari didn't know anything about the work. Fun times. Now I'm into experimental aircraft. Good times. Thank you for the videos, and please keep them coming 🏁👍🏻.
The wiz is back. One of the best if not the best tech on youtube. Nevermind those other know it all but work on nothing, the wiz know his stuff and explains it well. Am a mechanic myself I work on porsches all day and they can be tough but the wizard said it best take it one step at a time. You will get to the finish line. Weather is a honda or a ferrari the customer is paying you to fix and fix it well. Cheers guys
Old ex-mechanic here. I used to work on Pontiacs, Firebirds especially. When I was watching Hoovies, with you guys taking out the fuel tank on that Camaro, I said to myself, "I hope he watches out for that track bar when he loosens it to drop the tank." And sure enough. It happens to all first-timers doing that. Like a right of passage. I'm also impressed how you approach troubleshooting. I took my skills as a mechanic and applied them to computers, but I still love troubleshooting and working on cars of all types. If I was 30 years younger, I would come and work for you.
Excellent excellent video. Beautiful diagnosis !!!! Wish I lived near you, I'd bring my 1994 BMW 850CSi to you, if something went wrong with it. You are a great mechanic. !!
As a Ferrari enthusiast from “small but beautiful Switzerland” I very much appreciate your videos about the italian car brand and your UA-cam channel is just pure heaven for a gear head like me. You’re doing a great job and I wish you best of luck! Stay healthy and keep your down to earth attitude …
The mechanic that taught me told me that you have to be like a Detective. Eliminate all possibilities and what ever is left is the culprit. He was our Mercedes tech and I ended up going to MB school, thanks to him. Great content and the use of " the little Gray cells."
@Mike Anderson Same here, tried to watch some of his content but can't really get along with him, seems like an arrogant ''i'm always right even when i'm wrong" type of person and i can't cope with that.
As overcomplicated, overbuild and expensive on spares it is still a car made of screws bolts and components. Of course labour is expensive yes, components are overpriced sure just as samcrac showed with his 360 Modena gearbox actuator the same part, same spare number, was used on an Alfa Romeo gearbox and worked just fine and costed a tenth of a OEM Ferrari but as the wizard stated they are not impossible to work on.
@@TheAndre8900 Rob from superspeedrob identifies that too. He can often times find the same parts for a fraction of the price straight from the manufacturer instead of going through the car maker. I think he even specifically talked about fuel pumps and how the Ferrari branded one is stupid expensive and he thought that was weird because his 1000 hp Supra has a much more robust fuel pump and it was like a third the price. So he was able to find the same pump straight from the manufacturer of the pump which was considerably less simply because it didn't have the Ferrari logo on it. I think if you're going to fix up or own one of these cars it might behoove you to do this kind of research since it could potentially save you thousands of dollars.
The problem isn't how complicated it's just cost most people don't have the money for 2 $1400 fuel pumps so unless your quit well off you should avoid such cars I've bought rebuilt engines for less than $1400,I would love to drive a Ferrari, but i don't want to own one.
Wizard, as soon as you started describing the symptoms, I *knew* what the problem was. It was the same issue I had with my 550 Maranello the day I bought it in 2013. Unfortunately, mine left me stranded on the Grapevine Pass with an overheated and destroyed catalytic converter from running lean. By the time I got the fuel pumps fixed and cat replaced I was out nearly $10K. Your customer should consider himself lucky. Thankfully in the years since, it's been a wonderful machine.
David you were much faster on that problem than i would have been. I was thinking fuel air sensors for some reason. Or even clogged fuel injectors. So you were very efficient on this repair. I would consider an email to your current customers to get any car maintainance caught up.. offer car pick up and return. You could easily find someone out of work to help drive someone around to pick up cars. Not suggesting some food server pick up expensive cars. This could give you a good month or 2 of service work at a time you need it. Scott

This Ferrari is a whole lot like the Porsche 928, which has it's LH injection and EZK/F ignition modules in the passenger footwell, along with the fuse and relay panel behind a board. On the 928, there is one of each computer, and that board is a piece of plywood, not plastic. This video is great in that it shows a mechanic being a mechanic and trying to figure out a problem rather than just throw parts at the issue and run up the bill, like a lot of cheap shit shops/dealerships want to do. Keep up the good work Wizard! As to the whole Coronavirus thing, I was going to change the coolant on my '14 Cayman S myself, but to do it right I need to buy a small air compressor to create vacuum in the system to remove air pockets. I can get a small compressor from Northern/Harbor Freight for $29; Instead I think I'm going to give the local south Florida shop that specializes in Porsche's called Gulf Performance some business. [I'm going to ask him to show me how to do it, of course]

You have a great channel, Wizard. I love cars but don't know much about engines and yet I still find myself enjoying your videos. Learn a lot too. You're like the Bob Ross of mechanics
I think they disliked because this guy has no idea how to do diagnostic at all. He searched common problems for this on the internet that's the only way he could have figured this out.
I work on a lot of LS1 powered Camaro and Firebird cars. We don't drop the tanks anymore. It is easier to cut a hole in the trunk hump and replace the 'hole' with a trapdoor. I just go to junkyard and cut a panel to use as a cover. Toyota makes a very good 'gunk' sealant, it works well.
Thanks wizard for taking the time to walk us through the REAL diagnosing process. It isn't in the magic autel box all the time. Mostly, you have to use old fashioned deductive reasoning.
Wizard, thanks for these videos! Mixed with Hoovies videos where it’s just plain stupidity, I’m sure you’ll be happy I find this a healthy balance with your videos being informative. Great content!
I learn a lot from watching your videos. It reminds me of when I was young and worked in a mechanical workshop. I learn English too! I'm a Spanish guy but It is super easy to understand all you say.
Excellent video Wizard! the strangest code: None Ford Escape 03 V6: No power, Flashing CEL while driving, when idling no CEL & no codes, it really felt like torque converter shudder, Live data shows running a little bit lean, no vacuum leaks, good fuel presure in rail, flow in specs on injector test flow. So maybe was missfiring & O2 sensors only measure oxigen & not the fuel, & cuz misfiring, non-burnt oxigen got to O2 sensors reading lean. Changed sparkplugs & COP coils & problem Solved!! Again, excellent video Wizard, cheers from Cancún!
Wizard, you are indeed a Wizard, you have those diagnosis skills that are sadly lacking in many among the ranks of mechanics these days. Stay safe and well man, keep the great vids coming.
Hey Wizard! Excellent job on the diag. I am also a diagnostician for foreign cars and so much of what you are saying resonates with what I see on a daily basis. I've never seen those relay switches before, but I've already added them to my amazon cart through your affiliate page. Great job on the video also.
Thanks for taking our minds off of this b.s. Coronavirus. I greatly miss having a shop, myself. I have two vehicles that need exponential work to be done, but I’m having to wait until all this mess stops, and the weather is good enough for me to work on them.
Wow I really like to listen to you to see how smart and honest man you really learn the way a mechanic should learn and make a nice dissent living blessings to you sir
I was offered a similar car in overland Park a few years ago, a 456 GTA, a friend's friend wanted to get rid of it for $36k but I said no. I have seen hoovie's show and I knew better!
I had no idea what a 550 Maranello was until I got a 1:18 die cast model car back in 1999 . Brings back memories, but this time the real thing. Geeze those red eyes gave me a shock.
Ferrari and Maserati often share the exact same parts, and the Maserati labeled parts are usually priced considerably less than the Ferrari ones. Naturally, the shared parts don’t share the same part numbers, so that’s always a fun rabbit-hole to go down trying to cross reference part numbers… I wonder which Maserati model shares those exact same fuel pumps. Thanks to you both, Mr. and Mrs. Wizard, for the high quality informative videos.
I WISH I had a mechanic like the car wizard in my area. I wouldnt go anywhere else ever. Just subscribed. Of course came here through seeing many of tylers videos
One more thing... I had a 98 and then a 99 trans am. For the fuel pump an easy way to get it is to just cut a trap door in the trunk and the fuel pump is right there. No need to drop the tank or anything. I know that's not the "proper" way to do it but it save a lot of time
How were the fuel trims ? and o² values ? Absolutely no need to change the whole assemblies to get the same problem again. Just install a sock on each pump and get a bracket with rubber mount to keep the pump in place in the bowls. 2700 dollars saved and a happy customer who will come back.
Wizard, it's called experience, I changed all the rubber fuel lines on my XJS V12 convertible earlier this year for that very reason. Today, I dropped the rear cage to overhaul the brakes and bearings etc; it keeps me occupied though seeing that we're not supposed to be going out anywhere in the UK.

This is what a good mechanic looks like. The 550 was my first favorite Ferrari and would still be one of the first In my collection. Great content.
"This is where we make our money, you guys and *Hoovie's strange obsession with broken cars*... Fixed that for ya... ;)
Like the way they did that relay board. Easy access
Your "open mind" is a good philosophy. Thanks for the video. Please don't forget the road test at the end.
Great episode, Wizard. Wish I could bring my cars to you. Stay safe and healthy.
I love this style of video. Really dry and technical. Reminds me of those automotive shows from the 90’s
LMAO @ "The computer said that's your problem" 😂😂
For real. It's the same in IT with error codes. Experience pays off whether you're fixing a server or car.
Computer says no.
I learn a lot from watching your videos. It reminds me of when I was young and worked in a mechanical workshop. I learn English too! I'm a Spanish guy but It is super easy to understand all you say.
Hey Wizzard, do the new Ferrari fuel pumps have the same rubber seals or upgraded ones to deal with the ethanol fuel???
Very good question. Fixing the car with parts that will have the same issue in the future is not sustainable.
Excellent video Wizard!
the strangest code: None
Ford Escape 03 V6: No power, Flashing CEL while driving, when idling no CEL & no codes, it really felt like torque converter shudder, Live data shows running a little bit lean, no vacuum leaks, good fuel presure in rail, flow in specs on injector test flow. So maybe was missfiring & O2 sensors only measure oxigen & not the fuel, & cuz misfiring, non-burnt oxigen got to O2 sensors reading lean.
Changed sparkplugs & COP coils & problem Solved!!
Again, excellent video Wizard, cheers from Cancún!
the ecu is like a woman
goes into limp mode,
me: why are you going into limp mode
computer: it's your problem, not mine
🤔😳🤣😝😝😝😝
To complete that analogy, I think what the car really said was "Well, if you don't know, I'm certainty not going to tell you...." 😁
Usually limp mode is something a guy has
LOL
@@ccubsfan94 😂😂😂
Wizard, you are indeed a Wizard, you have those diagnosis skills that are sadly lacking in many among the ranks of mechanics these days.
Stay safe and well man, keep the great vids coming.
"This is not a $10,000 car. It's probably 5-7X that." 🤣
Hey Wizard! Excellent job on the diag. I am also a diagnostician for foreign cars and so much of what you are saying resonates with what I see on a daily basis. I've never seen those relay switches before, but I've already added them to my amazon cart through your affiliate page. Great job on the video also.
First view. Great job. Hope your business doesn’t suffer. Stay safe
550/575, is my favorite car of all time, so good looking.
Sounds like a set up I had on my V12 BMW
Yeah, some people kill themselves over that engine.
Nothing to get all hung up about, life goes on
You guys are killing me 😂
@@12yearssober famous last words
You'll be happy to know you didn't kill yourself...
Wizard i appreciate the content you put out. This are the times that will test a man's patience and strength. You can count on my support.
We're all in this together wizard. Kung Flu can't keep us down forever!
Thank You Wizard for keeping the video content flowing during these difficult times we world wide are facing.
Bad Boyz 2 car 😊
Long story short: DON'T BUY A FERRARI.....
Ferrari and Maserati often share the exact same parts, and the Maserati labeled parts are usually priced considerably less than the Ferrari ones. Naturally, the shared parts don’t share the same part numbers, so that’s always a fun rabbit-hole to go down trying to cross reference part numbers…
I wonder which Maserati model shares those exact same fuel pumps.
Thanks to you both, Mr. and Mrs. Wizard, for the high quality informative videos.
Amazing. Very competent, reliable, solid down to earth professional!
1998!!! Such a lovely car but I can’t believe it’s 22 years old?!? I loved these things when they came out and they still feel new to me.
Love the explanation of how you thought through the Ferrari's problem. A spectacular automobile design.
I WISH I had a mechanic like the car wizard in my area. I wouldnt go anywhere else ever. Just subscribed. Of course came here through seeing many of tylers videos
You are a straight honest man, pleasure to support you
@4:05 so Car Wizard is a Terminator cyborg, sent from the future to fix our cars
