Sadly wolf hybrids are becoming very common, because people do not understand the difference between a domesticated dog and a wild wolf. Most of them end up in shelters(and usually put down) because they don't act like a domesticated dog but a very confused animal, having instincts telling them two very different things. The sanctuaries that take in wolf hybrids have very long waiting lists that only increase over time, making the hybrids only suffer while the breeder earns a lot of money.
How are they becoming common though

I had a wolf dog for 15 years, that's her in my pic. She was extremely choosy about who she liked and it was always women. She hated most men and tolerated some. She was such a sweetheart to her family but if she didn't like someone she let you know. I had to tell ppl sometimes not to look at her in the eye, do not get in her face, don't touch her just ignore her and she will be happy. Such a wonderful animal but I would never recommend getting a hybrid they are not domestic dogs. That's why so many get abandoned or worse euthanized.

Would you step in there with him if he was barking at you? I think these just maybe understand animal behavior.
That actually IS how a wolf shows aggression. Ears up, head up, tail up, sharp barks, these are all tactics to make them seem bigger and more dominant. When a wolf likes you and sees you as an equal or their superior, they flatten their ears and lower their tails to show they aren't trying to scare you.
Domestic dogs may be descendants of wolves, but it's important to realize that wolves do NOT act like dogs. Yuki might be a hybrid wolf dog, but he is almost 90% wolf, and thus acts much more like a wolf than a dog.
Tail wagging just means excitement. A dog in a fight will wag its tail, but that doesn’t mean it’s happy.
Sadly Yuki passed later the night yesterday at 13years old surrounded by people he loved after three years of fighting blood cancer he left on his own terms.

Here's a fact. Wolves generally prefer more women than men because of women's petite build and their soft movements- rather than men who have a bulkier build and have rough movements. Soft, graceful and well-mastered movements assure them and are easier to trust for them whereas rough movement and heavy build might seem threatening to them.
This is why wolves in general let women befriend them rather than men. If you don't believe me, go search it on google and stop calling him a simp.

I’m guessing that part of the reason he accepted them is that they treat him like an alpha, while the others didn’t (the reason he doesn’t like men is probably because he can smell their hormones or something and it poses a threat to his status). Just speculation, though.

I remember seeing a grey wolf for the first time at a wildlife reserve in Wisconsin. First off they are nothing like a dog and they are massive. They don't walk like dogs their movements are very agile and majestic.
He'll be heartbroken if he ever separated from those humans.
Wolfdogs only live for about 12-14 years, and Yuki’s 12, so he’ll probably live out the rest of his life happily with his friends.

I had a really good trainer when my German Shepherd was 7 months old. So much of the training was learning about pack mentality, being the alpha, etc. I credit this training for my ability to create an unbelievably healthy relationship with Gladiator.

Well he is basically a wolf from behaviour. Wolf dogs don't make great pets because of that. That's why breeding wolfs dogs is prohibited in most countries and having one as a pet is illegal in some countries, too.
Whatever he was mixed with seems to have given him a straggly sort of coat, like he doesn't have the thick outer guard hairs or something, and only has the under layers. It makes him look kind of extra rugged.

I hope they're an accredited sanctuary. He seems not too bothered by men(the barks seems friendly), a few exposure therapy sessions and im sure anyone can handle him.
Of course they are accredited. Sadly Yuki passed away a few years ago from cancer. He lived a lot longer than expected and generated a good deal publicity. He was quite the character and was beloved by his caretakers and fans.

I raised 7 wolves with a black lab and a kitty. The cat would walk through the pack and bat at his favorites face the alpha of the pack and he would just sit there calmly and play with him. You had better not mess with their cat. Mine used to run free up in Tahoe Mountains always coming home with another dog. They would protect both dogs and the neighbors out door cats from the Coyotees. The Wolves hated the Coyotees but loved dogs and cats. Our neighborhood lost no dogs to Coyotees while the Wolves were there.

So sad that Yuki passed away a few weeks ago. He came to the sanctuary with a blood cancer and lived a lot longer with his mate than was anticipated. Shy Wolf will be posting a tribute soon.
