Wow, I first found your channel (and 3DPrinting Nerd) when I was looking into making a family ring. Plans change, time passes but your pewter casting helped me get into 3d printing. Congratulations on 7years of marriage. Thanks for revisiting a wonderful and inspirational project! Looking forward to the next 7years of magic that happens from you two!

Might be a bit tricky but you should date when you wore the rings and keep them in some sort of order if you do this again. Keep them all displayed on something, maybe a chain that can be hung up with wedding photos or momentos.

Add a little bit of lead free silver solder to the mix of pewter it should keep a shine.

When you took out the tiny "saw" that looked almost like a long serrated blade version of an X-Acto knife, I thought, "That's going to take way to long. I'd want to use a power tool for that." Then a second later, you seamed to come to the same conclusion. LOL

I wish you many, many more years and new rings. This is a sobering one for me as I did a project like this in the same timeline. As the divorce filing is literally days around the corner, I'm sad to say that our scratches didn't polish out... And recasting isn't an option. Thank you for sharing this and I celebrate with you for what has been an amazing 7 years to watch.

You should make a silver quarter ring sometime. I made one for my wife and she uses it as her wedding ring. I just picked up a solid silver quarter (before 1965) and then beat the edge with a spoon to round it out and flatten the edge. Annealed it a couple of times along the way and then cut out the center and sanded it. The "Liberty" on the quarter's edge rounded over and is still readable inside the ring.

I think if it were me, I would always reincorporate the old ring into casting the new ring, that way no matter how many times I recast it, it still has a part of that original ring in there.

I've made rings out of epoxy (do not recommend. They usually, quickly, stretch and snap after a few months. I've lost several this way.), but never considered pewter. I still have the silicone molds. I'll try this.

I love metal casting; I find it very therapeutic. Sand casting with zinc isn't much hotter. It's super achievable in a home shop, and not very expensive to start.

Good call! he old nig weighs 3.82g and the new one weighs 4.86g. It lost over a gram of material in 7 years!

could you put resin in the details to keep them longer? maybe dip the ring in epoxy and help put a protective layer and it may keep longer? or am I incorrect in that thinking?

I have wanted to try pewter casting and then electroplating it after with another metal. Have you ever tried that?
We really want to try electroplating but haven’t yet!
@@punishedprops I saw someone mention i think on reddit that it is possible to plate pewter and that they had good success with acidic plating electrolyte whatever that means. I once tried electroplating copper on some brass guitar pickup covers. I remember making the solution from distilled white vinegar and household hydrogen peroxide and dissolving a copper dish scrubbing pad into a warm (like nice warm bath water warm) but not cooking hot solution of the two in a glass container until it turned pale blue. I used a cheap variable power supply and some of that bare copper wire electricians use for your house outlets so you can make a coil that sort of follows the electrolyte container walls without touching the object anywhere. It was harder than I thought… first you need to really clean the surface of the object to be plated like literally every spec of oil and oxidation and use gloves when handling it. Second getting good electrical connection to the object as well and moving it every so often both at the electrical connection and in the jar of electrolyte without messing it up so that it plates evenly can be tricky for some things. Thirdly the electrical contact wire will also try to get plated so it might grow weird tendrils that make junk that could gets in the way of a good plating… i think some people use stuff like coffee filters between the object and claim adding other stuff to the electrolyte helps the source metal electrode make the plating more even somehow… but just as important is also why a variable power supply can be nice as you can set the voltage or current to control the speed, Once you get good with copper which is the most common cheap “base” metal to plate then you can plate over with other metals like nickel, silver, or gold… but you need to buff the surface again without buffing the plating off and use different electrolyte solutions for each metal though most of the time because gold is so expensive people use a brush plating method where you have a bit of the metal to plate covered in something soft that holds on to the electrolyte and you connect it and the object to be plated to the power supply and essentially brush on metal… It is tricky but the reward is a new craft not many can do. I do wonder looking at your ring if you could go copper on the whole thing… then silver over that.. then carefully paint the recesses of your design in a clear varnish carefully wiping any excess off the top with acetone and then brush plate the high points in gold, you could even remove the varnish after and force oxidize the silver to a nice black…for the contrast you like. What i don’t recommend is heating… i wanted those cool thin oxidation colors you can get from copper when you carefully heat it… i tried controlling it with a high temp oil like i do with my cast iron pans but the heat more often than not would cause the plating to bubble off of the brass in places on the pickup covers.

I'm glad I'm able to use the excuse I'm an electrician and can't wear metal on my hands. Never was a fan of rings and gave me a reason for another tattoo.

My BIL has a silicon band that he wears to work.
Also, neither of my parents ever wear their rings.
My dad is a farmer, and it isn't safe. My mom's hands swell, so rings don't fit.
I remember my great uncle having to go to the ER because his ring got caught, so I won't criticize anyone for not wearing a ring. There are just so many options. A tattoo is yours and is awesome.
If I didn’t have this ring I would probably just get a tattoo.
