sad truth: they wouldnt price it that much if they didnt know for sure people WILL buy it. at this point these companies have so much data on addictive behavior and exploitation that exactly know how much to charge to maximize earnings.

Then you are not their target audience. I have plenty of friends who do not have time to grind out tech tree ships but love playing the game. For example who do not have time to grind out a dockyard, so they just buy it out. Im sure you know this - people have lives, jobs and families.

who the hell is out there paying $145 for any ship on WoWS?!?! I better be able to walk around that entire ship and be invincible for the first 5 mins of any match for $145 lol.
I converted ship xp to free xp to avoid the jinan line grind. No regrets here, but that was only 90 or so bucks.

Needs to be mentioned too, you can get another great T9 premium Fletcher class for absolutely free with coal by getting Black instead. Just as good or better than Johnston and it has radar. I would take that over Johnston’s burst gimmick any day.
The only downside to the Black is the painfully slow (43 knots) torps. Otherwise a great DD.
@@1338Sunshine That hit like a truck. And go 13.5km. And have the lowest detect/reaction time of any torp other than deep water maybe. The torps are very good.
@@wazewaze8185 All true. In ranked its good to choke off a narrow channel. Not as effective at torping a broadside bb in open water. So pick your flavor from among the Fletcher, Velos, Black and Johnston and I think a PA dd Chung Mu(?).

@@wazewaze8185 My hit rate with these torps is actually really good and they are definitely usable. They reload fast enough and the range is nice. They are so slow, that most players don't seem to care or forget about them. Sometimes they also misjudge the speed and eat them. I know i do. As you mentioned, they hit very hard. And due to Black having radar and the ability to push key points, you get some of the best angles and positions to launch these torpedoes.
I noticed that everytime PQ says something negative (honest) about WG or their pricing strategy, I immediately remember to hit the like button on his videos. 😂😂

Good Video the Fletcher is one of the best tier 9 dds to me. The prices in the USA $83.20 Johnston and $145.80 for the Rhode Island.

Fletcher strikes a good balance of what a DD should be - teaches a player nearing the endgame of how to master DDs at that tier, and her set makes her viable in pretty much all situations that require a DD. Her torps are nowhere near as good as the IJN ones and while she certainly can't gunfight like a Russian or French DD, she can still do a decent job at it.
You’ve got to be kidding on those prices. Quitting this game was the best thing I could do for my wallet and time. Still see they have no respect for historical ships
Wasnt there a recent study that came out stating the conclusion, "the higher the price, the more likely someone will buy a internet in game item thinking its higher quality/grants them prestigious status bragging rights" ?
Cause if that study is real, and true. that explains a lot.
I mean logically that makes sense, because generally that logic applies to IRL stuff you can buy (to an extent)
Wargaming's target audience are people who have a pit deeper than the grand canyon for a brain. And it works extremely well.
It's a combination of releasing an "overpowered" ship, giving people the illusion of having an advantage ingame (most of them will suck in it anyway), with the fear of missing out. Just classic manipulative business strategies, nothing new.
Counterstrike weapon skins have been proving that for a long time. Motherfuckers will pay thousands, sometimes even tens of thousands for a fucking knife skin.
The general playerbase assumes expensive premium ship = automatic win generator.

I remember when we had a myoko for every event, for free, now we have fletchers everywhere for a 80+ bucks, GW greed has no limits.
I saw the price of Johnston and Rhode Island, and immediately said, I will never get my hands of these.
The prices are indeed nuts, especially for us on this side of Canada (think you mentioned being in the Vancouver area too).

The Fletcher is still a beast! I have managed to score some high caliber Krakens using it in silver ranked lately. It can be a little rough against some of the newer gun boat dds and I often wish it had a heal. However the Fletcher would likely be a bit OP if it had a heal with no other changes, it is still that good.
the Johnston really needed to have either more HP than normal fletchers, had the french destroyer saturation mechanic, or have a good heal. without the durability being put in this ship is just a slap in the face to the ship's real history.
So make a strong ship even stronger? Good idea 🫠

Well you can also buy it without the admiral pack in the premium store but it is still very expensive as a tier 10 so I would skip on it entirely.

I was Lucky in the Containers, I only bought the 10k dubs bundle for ten crates, I got the Saipan and the Alabama in the first 8 crates, I then got the Johnston on the last Crate I opened. SO I got two tier 8 and a tier 9 ships for just 10k dubs or 49.50$ in U.S Dollars. If only my luck was like this all the time however...

I bought 10 containers and opened them all at once. There was a Johnson (ship) in there. Glad I only bought the 10 containers.

I got lucky with the premium containers, 7th or 8th container in got me the Johnston, but I also have all the other ships in the container drops.

I’m surprised that WG didn’t come out with an “Under De Sea” Cammo for the Johnston… All Shot to Sheeeit with her Captain standing on the aft deck shouting steering orders down to the backup steering gear.
Bought the admiral pack and spent tokens on the wings of freedom containers that yielded me a Saipan. Not what I wanted but I now know I wont get a Saipan in future containers. LOL.

@@cacho3613 Bought Johnston with in game gold purchased with the birthday coupon back in November. So whatever the gold cost of Johnston, was I paid half for it.
Traded my Saipan in the exchange event. So glad I did, even if I may get her again some time. Save her for the next trade if so.
Why people like fletcher than gearing? (I haven't played any of them just curious)
For console to guarantee the Vallejo in there special random bundles its 250$ USD and you can not buy it on its own in the store.
Plus Vallejo is extremely weak/difficult to play.
Been playing since 2018 and have spent $10 total on this game in that time, I agree that the prices are insane, but this is the only time where i'm going to whale and but the ship outright. I'm a HUGE nerd when it come to naval history and have been waiting for this ship for 6 years I really don't care if it's good or not. And there is a little more to it, My great great uncle Homer Canfield was at Samar on Oct 25, 1944, he was not on Johnston but he served on (and survived the sinking of) USS Hoel.
The Johnston is $125 by it self in Australia. Packs and the Rhode Island are a lot more. For that cost I could jump into the Steam Summer sale and buy Sniper Elite 5, Baldurs Gate 3, Lethal Company and Planet of Lana all from my wishlist.
the fact they put it in the armory for cash, then put an over the top price on this and RI, means i will only get them from a random container drop some year down the road.
What makes you think you’ll get such a ship from a gambling crate, maybee after spending $200, otherwise forget it. Weegee gambling crates only ever favour weegee!

The prices are dumb. But that's WG for you. I haven't purchased a ship for dubs in years and I was willing to buy the Johnston ship only but they're trying to gouge us, so nah.
Not sure about the Rhode Island, but for me Johnston's Admiral Pack showed up at about $67 USD (could have been discounted)

Played my Groningen yesterday, ran into three Johnstons during various games and won each one on one. People are rushing in with it looking for quick and big damage, and dying in the first minutes of the game.
how can they justify those prices?
I saw the price of the Rhode Island and double checked my progress on the dockyard, and it would’ve been 6,000 doubloons cheaper for me to get the Wisconsin with all the extra resources and stuff, over the Rhodes.
You could get multiple Triple A games for the price of ONE ship!!
How about revisiting a gun/torp build Gearing now since Fletcher's such a great experience
I love gearing. My most played ship. Have halsey on it. Which is killer when you get confederate and I've gotten some double strikes that reduce conceal 10%. 5.3km conceal with non legendary
Outrageous pricing for these new ships.
The Johnston has a few quirks over the Fletcher, but the Fletcher just is a better balanced ship.

Prior to quitting this game 4 years ago, I put about 550 in total for this game and I felt I gave too much. To think the cost of Johnston and Rhode Island combined is over half of how much I tossed at the game over a timespan of 4 years is beyond ridiculous.
Fun fact about the fletcher: a full torpedo build can actually be better than yugumo 😊

Fletcher was the end of my first line of ships and the first ship that I felt like I had mastered. However, I just don't play her anymore because she has been so power crept. Problem is the American smoke which used to be a powerful tool. Now with the flood of hyper fast torpedoes and radar, it just does not make much sense to stay in smoke very long. And long smoke is what the Fletcher has to offer. I built her as a torpedo boat but 10 km torps is really just the edge of acceptable at her tier. Kidd and Black are really so much better. I don't see much added with the Johnson

Fletcher's a great dd, love it, use it in ranked alot - sometimes switch to Jutland but miss the speed, agility of fletcher sets it apart imho. Even black isn't worth the trade off imho, you give up too much with the torps for the radar, if you go up against a Black, just Bait the radar then you're up against a worse fletcher....
Don't understand how people justify buying these ships - you can get a whole AAA game for that much....

this isnt related, but the sequential bundles for california in the event are very very scummy. its not actually 2900 doubloons to buy california, its 3900, because the total cost of the preceding bundles is 700 american tokens (or whatever they're called), and you can only get 600 from the combat missions. meaning, you have to spend another 1k to get another 100 independence tokens. i dont know why you wouldnt just leave it at 3900 total cost for california and make it so that you ACTUALLY could get all 3 preceding bundles for 600 american tokens. This is for anyone like me who just likes the american battleships and wants to have california to play occasionally and look at.
Just save up money and get the Christmas crates.

I had the idea of a funny button (since WG are mad for these silly gimmicks): it charges up when taking potential damage, and when activated, it provides a long zombie heal. It'd be a lot more flavourful and characteristic, there's risk and reward and requires skill to make the most of.
If the Johnston had a torp reload similar to the Fletcher I would get it. But as is, I´ll stick with my Fletcher.

Rhode Island is $261 dollars here in Canada if you use the dubs to get it. For that price I can buy real, high quality, tools for my wood shop that I can enjoy for the rest of my life... or a single ship in a video game that will most likely shut down at some point and be unavailable.
The sad thing is the whales are going to eat this up and make them a ton of money.

Have to consider that these ships cost triple A game prices and in terms of the johnston, a destroyer, you are at the most risk of getting fucked over by subs and carriers. Just keep that in mind.

Yeah as more time goes on I’m mire and more happy that I decided to switch my gatcha spending on Azure Lane instead, it costs me a fraction of the WG cost and has MUCH friendlier drops. I’ll keep playing wows but it is quickly becoming a game I won’t spend money on.

I mentioned in another creators video on this event that WG was nuts to be charging these kind of prices for game content in this economy and I offended a WoWs Whale.
This Whale told me to get a job and stop complaining about what I couldn't afford. Its not that I can't afford pricy pixel boats, I just have other expenses. Like food, gas, utilities and real stuff. Also WG hasn't been doing enough to earn that kind of money.

When I used to play a lot of WoWs I gave them about 3k in two years. The argument that it's free to play just doesn't hold water when the prices in their store are so ridiculous. They aren't trying to keep the game afloat, they are profiteering. Paying $80 Australian dollars for a ship or for dubloons is so completely ridiculous considering there currency and ships are just virtual, infinitely reproduceable 1's and 0's. Wargaming if you read these comments ..... you could reduce the price of everything you sell by 50% and they would still be too expensive. I love spending money on my hobby but playing your game i just cannot shake the feeling that I'm being screwed over and that I'm a fool every time I think about giving you money. I would still be playing your game and actively participating if your prices were reasonable.

Spending 250 USD on WG when Steam Sale is on ? LOL no.
Even with the standard price of T9/10 premium ships, I personally would never buy one. That is just simply WAY to much money to throw away on a single ship in the game. The way I look at it is like this. I could spend ~$110-$130 for a single T9 or ~$190-$220 for a single T10. Or I could go over to Star Trek Online and spend ~$110 for 10 ships in that game by picking up one of their expansion packs(Gamma Vanguard for you STO nerds) that not only are more ships I can play and enjoy but because of how ships work in that game, 8 of those 10 ships have "traits" on them, that once unlocked I can then use while playing any other ship. So even if I don't want to use those ships specifically a month or more down the road, as long as I've unlocked their traits I will always be able to get benefit from buying them.
We don't have that in Warships, there is ZERO benefit to having more ships than you actively play outside of the Snowflake event at the end of the year, and that's hardly even close to the same thing. ~80 Steel or a single ticket for a Santa container would take decades to be worth the price of a T9/10 premium. Now I wouldn't want Wargaming to give us STO style traits, that would ruin the balance of the game and invite a ton of power creep, but it would be neat if they would add a system where you can basically send your ships you aren't actively using on missions to get like green economic boosters, and it makes your ship unavailable to play for X amount of time, but can earn you economic boosters, signal flags and maybe even combat missions specific to that ship to earn Supercontainers or something.(Actually might throw that idea into the feedback channels...) that way over time expensive premiums have a way of making themselves worth it if you don't end up playing them much.
Need to flesh out this idea more, I legit just had it writing this comment. The bonus of just rambling I guess.
