  • We are a couple building a house all on our own. We have NO building experience and have learned every trade that it takes to build a house.
    Finally, we are closing in on getting our house ready for our temporary certificate of occupancy.
    To get this certificate of occupancy, we have to have ALL of the walls and ceilings covered in our house.
    We started covering our walls and ceilings with shiplap & tongue and groove boards in June of 2023, and FINALLY, we are DONE with this massive undertaking.
    Follow along as we complete the shiplap in our self built home.
    *******************************************************************
    And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on UA-cam. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 10 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
    Unfortunately, some unforeseen events in 2020 that were completely out of our hands put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
    In the summer of 2021, we FINALLY moved to the Hood Canal so we could start the build of our future home. While we are building our home, we are living in a camper trailer and the yurt that we built in the summer of 2020. We hope to have our cabin kit home built by the end of 2023. Just my husband and I are building the house. We get help here and there from friends along the way and we do plan to get help on the roof but other than that we are doing it all on our own.
    Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

    Great progress! For the lowest part of the storage under the stairs, maybe it would be an option to have a drawer or two that open on one or both sides of the wall from the outside. That way you wouldn't loose storage space by having to leave space on the inside to maneuver a drawer or wheeled cart. Thanks for sharing your story. It has been interesting to watch everything come together.

      Aww! Thank you. Thats such a meaningful compliment to us both because we both always feel like our story telling in our episodes is our weakest point.

    Definitely a drawer under the stairs. They are not that difficult and you may as well make the space accessible.

      Yes, that is what I'm thinking. I'll need to start looking at designs if I'm going to use drawer slides or some sort of caster system.

    I love how excited you get when things come together. I think a flat storage cart on wheels for under stairs would work wonderful. As you age, you will be thankful to just roll out that cart back there than on your hands and knees.😊

    I like the idea of some sort of rollable mechanism under the stair platform.
    So excited for you that your now able to get the inspections you need.

    Why don’t you make access to that small space under your stairs FROM the stairs? Put hinges on one of the stair treads so it lifts up to give you access. I did that at the foot of our stairs for shoes and stuff. I put a glass strut on it as a hinge.

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  5 місяців тому +1

      Well, the top half of the prow outside of the house won’t be completed until we have a deck blow it to set the scaffolding on. So you just have to keep waiting on that one for a while.

    When are you going to finish covering up the tyvek on the main windows outside?
    Bet youre glad to see the back of ship lapping 🥳🍻🥂

    Why note make a drawer as part of the step that is on pulls and can utilize the space under the stairs

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  5 місяців тому

      Yeah, I'm trying to decide between installing a drawer or using some sort of casters or rollers. I'm leaning towards furniture movers because it's low tech and should last forever.

  • @thtadthtshldntbe
    @thtadthtshldntbe 5 місяців тому +1

    Nice work. I have seen others with spaces under stair platforms like that use like carts on wheels or take those furniture dolleys and attach small cabinets to them

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  5 місяців тому +2

      That seems like the easiest answer. A super long drawer slide is tempting as well.

      @@OneFootOfftheGrid the major downside to drawers if that if one of the rails suffers a mechanical failure that small space would be annoying as heck to repair or replace it.

    Just wondering are you going to finish the front outside…or is that 20 weeks to go

    • @OneFootOfftheGrid
      @OneFootOfftheGrid  5 місяців тому

      We are planning to finish it. We are waiting until we get the front deck built so it's easier to setup the scaffolding and reach up that high. Hopefully not 20 weeks out. I'm guessing 10 weeks though.
