I feel bad for Jayam Ravi (even though I'm not a fan of his), so far out of all the 'foreigners reacting to PS1 trailer', people only talked about the two actresses and the actor Vikram and Karthi, but not Jayam Ravi. But then again I don't think he is famous enough for foreigners to know him, haven't seen much reacting to his movies either. It's a good thing that he's in this movie, he will gain recognition hopefully.

It's not just only 3-4 actors/actresses which you speak about. There are so many top actors of South Indian Cinema are in this movie.
Secondly it is not just inspiration but the Author Kalki Krishnamurthi has written this fiction novel based on real incident/events happened 1050 years ago which was taken from inscriptions and manuscripts.
It was written 70 years ago from 1950-54 and the book came out as 5 volumes. Reading the book will be more interesting.
To simply put ponniyin Selvan is the Indian version of game of thrones.

Story: When the death of a Royal Blood is prophesied, some influential people in the Chola Kingdom seek to attain the Throne, while some try to destroy the Kingdom. We begin with Vanthiyathevan(Karthi) as he travels to deliver the message of Prince Aditha Karikaalan(Vikram) to King Sundara Chola(Prakash Raj) and Princess Kundavai(Trisha). Karthi is the main actor.It's historical fiction based on real events .The Cholas were at their height of glory were the greatest maritime force in the world.They were in SE Asia, Meso America along with the Pallavas ,traded with China,Egypt and Roman empires.All characters portrait did exist in Chola and Pandya history in this context.

Vanakkam! The opening fight reminded Gladiator, the scenes between Vikram and Vikram Prabhu, the sea shore fight in Sri Lanka reminded of Troy, the scene where Karthi was alone in the sea reminded of Life of Pai, the rescue scenes of Ooman Rani reminded of The Lord of the Rings. the fight sequence of Karthi at the Fort reminded of The Scorpion King. Apart from these things the characterization is well handled. The cinematography and the lighting is enjoyable. The costumes and the use of jewelry takes the audience to the time. Sure there will be orders pouring into many jewelry shops at least in Tamilnadu. All the characters are well portrayed by the seasoned artists of our film industry. The background music and the songs are delivered well by A R Rahman. Well choreographed dances by Brindha. Lovely lines by the lyricists. Thank you Mr. Mani Ratnam- PONNIYIN SELVAN- Part-1.

This is not based on the real Chola dynasty history. It is based on the novel 'ponniyin selvan' by famous Tamil writer and media person kalki krishnamoorthy. Why cholas are important to Indian History. This is only biggest Indian empire which established their control on overseas lands and had best earliest navel force in the world (even earlier than European rulers). Real and Important King in the Chola dynasty is Raja Raja Chalan, who built the famous Brihadeeswara Temple. This character is played in the movie version by Jayam Ravi. But in this novel and this movie, Friend of Raja Raja Cholan's character is given importance. So this movie does not give 100% details about The Great Raja Raja Cholan.
