Damn, still relevant in 2021: at some point they made the brush paint without snapping with Windows Ink, which is great - but the eyedropper tool would still snap. And PSUserConfig.txt fix works even in Ps 2022, making the eyedropper butter-smooth!

I literally want to cry tears of joy. I have been working in Photoshop since CS, on Windows XP and whatever Mac OS was out at the time. I went through many frustrations with the input lag on Windows 8/10 and also discovered it was windows ink, but had the same issue with it making the stylus not work properly. I have been suffering with that initial stutter/snap from windows ink for a couple years now, and can't even believe how ridiculous it is to have to go through the process to get a NORMAL, smooth stroke, but thank you for passing this along. Windows really needs to build an elegant solution in considering how many users use wacom tablets or cintiqs.

you prabably can make Photoshop use WindowsINK again by changing the "UseSystemStylus 0" to "UseSystemStylus 1" in the text file, instead of deleting it.
Photoshop stores most if not all settings on Windows Registry for loading faster, so when you remove the text file it still load this setting from Windows Registry.

FINALLY - THANK YOU thank you. I fixed the pen lag when I first installed Photoshop, found a solution somewhere on the PS forum (don't remember exactly what, but it was in controls panel somewhere). But one thing that never got fixed was an issue when changing at of the tool sliders by clicking on the label and then move the pen. E.g. if Opacity is at 100% then if I drag the opacity value down, then it would jump right back to 100% when lift the pen. Only if I drag the value, then drag the pen down before lifting it would it stick. The PSUserSetting fix FINALLY took care of this - so THANK YOU once again

Had to give up on painting on Photoshop because of the crappy graphic card, so I usually only use it to add some additional touches like lighting and stuffs for the finished drawings made on programs like Sai. Followed adobe's instructions on how to fix the lag, like changing the performance to basic, and it still didn't work.
That's till I saw your video and do evertything you said. It totally works like charm!! I can't believe that I can finally draw on Photoshop now without the constant rage from lagging brush xD Anyway, thank you so much!! xxx
    Edit:
I guess I spoke too soon. This method makes the brush doesn't lag as much as before, but it only works for certain brushes, in my case. Some of my brushes (and borodante's free brushes too) still lags alot , even after using this method. Tried to change the spacing, and still lagging. Really hope anyone could tell me how to totally fix the freaking lag OTL OTL

hey guys [ UPDATE ON AUG 25 2018 ] tweaking these settings can decrease your photoshop performance but doesnt help with the lag. It's simple. Just select the brush you use or the brushes you use. > go to the brush setting. > There you would find all the brush settings as shaping dynamics and such things.> find the SMOOTHING option and > just uncheck it. solves the problem right away. if you still need both smoothing and no lag i would suggest to practice more on your digital art without software smoothing.

When I disable Windows Ink It changes ges the function of the eraser on Wacom Pen. It would work the same as the tip, painting/selecting/ etc. So I leave it on so I can use thr eraser on the pen. I don't like having to alternate between pressing E to eraser and B to paint again. If I can fix or still use eraser on pen as intended with Windows Ink off, I'd turn it off.

I wish I could do some of these things to Krita. Running PS in virtualbox is still faster...
And for people who really want to save the tiny steps in their brushes, you can do the main blocking in with a small canvas of the proper ratio and scale it up later for the details instead.

I saw the same fix on another video a while back, but great work sharing it dude. i have a little bug after the fix where i go to select a new brush and for the first stroke- opacity and shape dynamics doesnt work, but I found if i make my first brushstroke off my canvas with that newly selected brush i can paint normally on the canvas then afterwards. its a little annoying to begin with but after a while it becomes natural, I liken it to when you paint in real life and you dip your brush into the paint - you always wipe a bit off afterwards! Anyway just in case someone runs into the same problem as me i hope this helps!

Thank you, oh lord and savior Borodante! I struggle with PS performance issues all the time. The WinTabs thing I already knew about, but you did help to understand some of the Photoshop settings.
WinTab is the pen input API that Wacom uses. Windows Ink is a piece of crap and just gets in the way, so I really recommend switching to WinTab, at least for Wacom users. I can't speak on other tablet manufacturers because, well, I've never used anything besides Wacom.
Wacom's drivers are notoriously buggy, as well, so sometimes it can be helpful to just backup and restore Wacom preferences with the preferences utility; doing so reinitializes the tablet driver.
Also, for ordinary Wacom tablet users (like myself), if you have the wireless accessory, try using the tablet on a USB connection and removing the wireless accessory. The wireless accessory was nothing but frustration for me; it wouldn't initialize the Wacom driver at system startup, it started disconnecting randomly after a couple years of use, the battery charge icon didn't always appear in the system tray... The wireless dongle would also cause my computer to take astronomical amounts of time to even begin booting Windows for some unknown reason which even Wacom was unable to figure out. I'm not the only one who has had the issue, either, so it's certainly not an isolated incident.
As a side note, Borodante... I really wish my pen was tilt-capable. It's such a pain working with a statically rotated brush and having to rotate it manually. :/ If I could afford it, I'd have a Cintiq in addition to my Pen & Touch tablet.

    Hi, Daniel!
I have this lag with liquify you are talking about in video (at 8:40)
I tried everything so far, reinstalled windows, tried 7,8 and 10 version, all soft and all drivers for photoshop and wacom intuos pro, used all tricks including yours, and still have this lag... please tell me if you have any other ideas how to get rid of it, as it is driving me crazy.. I can't work becaus of it.. the only thing helps is turning off "use graphics processor" but then.. all perfomance is not so great.. but this thing completely turnoff this lag, do yo have any ideas what the problem is...
p.s. I even upgraded my hardware, got new video card + ssd disk and made some tests of ram memory to be sure everything is ok with it .. and professionals say everything is great with hardware, and actually it worked great for me before I decided to reinstall windows.. but now, I'm trying for 10 days in a row to fix this problem from early morning till late night and can't find any solution that could help me. please please please!!! maybe you have some ideas... !! will be greatful for any ideas!

Really nice trick to make Photoshop faster without Turning OFF the GPU... The first setting you mentioned about setting the cache to the minimum worked wonders for me!! :D
I couldn't even work smoothly in 4096x4096 resolution with 300dpi, but now I can!! :D
but the 2nd Windows Ink setting and the PSConfig file didn't work for me very well, instead it made the strokes that I drew much more laggy than before, so I discarded the PSConfig file and Turned ON Windows Ink.
I am using Photoshop 2021 on latest Windows 10 with 2GB AMD Radeon Graphics on a Mid 2015 Macbook Pro... with Wacom Intuos Pen Tab... so my setup is pretty underpowerful and outdated.
But in any case, I think the 2020 and 2021 versions of Photoshop and Illustrator have many LAG problems which many people have reported... so we can't do much about it but to wait until its fixed. :)
Photoshop 2019 works wonders even without all these optimizations.
Guess I might switch to 2019 for now.

Thank you so much, I've had this issue for so long and couldn't find fixes anywhere. For me it actually freezes up for seconds (sometimes 10s of seconds). Like once a minute, sometimes every few strokes. I would have to click on another program and go back to photoshop to unfreeze it or it would be still trying to catch up and making things even worse.
It is insane that I had to find a fix for this! Either MS or Adobe should automatically have this under control because it literally destroys the experience of painting and it has taken many efforts looking on the internet for fixes before I came here. Both of them will say it isn't their problem.
Thank you thank you thank you!

There was a recent windows update that was really screwing with wacom and photoshop. Every time I tried to erase or use the brush it would just move the canvas around. Turning of windows ink this way solves the issue. Thanks :)

This worked! took care of the issue i was having with my PS canvas moving instead of pen stroke, as if using the moving/hand tool when trying to make a stroke. Windows ink was the issue, thank you so much for making this tutorial!

My photoshop was lagging and my settings were already at the lowest so I was starting to lose hope, but the real solution at the end worked wonders for me!

As the last update of PS v 21.2.2, pressure sensitivity doesn't works if you have the file and if you have deactivated the windows ink option in the tablet projection settings.

By telling Photoshop to use wintab (an older tablet driver for windows), you're setting up a default which sticks until you remove the command to use WinTab and re-enable ink.

Thanks for the advice, I also found that having several text layers with effects applied to them tends to make the program lag a bit too when using the brushes.
