In all honesty retail sucked before Amazon became big. We didn't need CD's anymore because music became terrible and free online. The toys even at ToysRus had way less variety than they did in the 80's & 90's before they closed. The video games today pale in comparison to the 90's, and for whatever reason people are adopting digital downloading games. They no longer sell movies in most stores because of streaming, and good new films are rare. You no longer want or need to go to the movies because not only are the movies weaker, the cost is higher. Instead you can just wait a few months before the movie is available to rent or buy for cheaper. The clothes available in stores have less variety, and are most cases are more expensive than online. Furthermore you have to spend more time, and gas money to go to the stores that provide less value than they used to for the reasons I stated. Dude...my husband and I were so heartbroken for our son when Toys R Us was going bankrupt in 2018, we decided to take him to our nearby store that was closing when he was 2 yrs old. We told him we were going to a very special store full of toys and he could pick out a toy he wanted. We didn't know if the experience was going to be lost on him, but I'm telling you, Toys R Us, even in its decline, was so magical, even an autistic 2 yr old understood there's nothing like it. I can't stress how sad it makes me to see any Best Buy these days, mine used to have rows upon rows in the center with physical media. DVDs and Blu-rays upon days... Side note, are there UA-cam Emmy's? I'd seriously think of submitting some of your narrated videos Riff. Amazing work.
I think the reason there aren't many sounds is due to the many complaints from people like me who have sensory issues. The loud noises from people and crying kids is enough so to top it off with electronic sounds is too much for others. Hope this helps :)
Every time I go to my Best Buy I can feel it being a shell of its former self, especially since they got rid of Blu Rays and their toys/games are so empty and poorly stocked. It seems like all the big box stores are so empty and disorganized. I guess that's what happens when big corporations get greedy and cheap.
Bestbuy is a smarthome store... and as a millenial... it's like stepping in a depression box. I hate going to walmart, but it's the last place that sells dvds, blu-rays, & 4k's because target's selection as has always been lame since 2014...
@@bubba842 ya, cuz' they're catering to homeowners. Smart home applainces, doorbells, drones, phones, e-bikes, & big tv's. Most of us millenials can't even afford a home... to begin with. Their pc selection is decent, but you can't really walk in and piece out pc really quick like you can with amazon. They never have the motherboard or cpu you're looking for and the nvme's are always of the lowest capacities like 1-2tb's. Best buy needs to expand their custom pc part selection because it's hella small. They never have higher end gpu's in stock...either.
Riff, speaking on behalf of Target team members (I work at one) here is what I can tell you regarding self-checkout. My store doesn't open ours till about 12-1pm. Then usually it will get closed around 8:30 or later. This is to allow us enough time to go around to all of registers and "close them" for the day. I personally don't agree with how they operate, but I'm not Brian Cornell so you can take that up with him!
It's similar here in Australia, except for 1-2 speciality stores, every major department store that have physical games always guts the games, sticks the case on the shelf and keep the discs/carts behind the counter. I absolutely refuse to buy from these places as the games aren't new. This means my options are limited though. It's nice to see the stores over there actually put the games in security cases instead.
I was thinking Riff is going to show walmart a 12 dozen eggs is now cost around 10 dollars because a month ago it was around 5 dollars. Now that is depressing too.
One of my favorite Best Buy moments was way back in 1996 where my friend and I on a Saturday morning just decided to go there as he lived next a mall where Best Buy was and we strolled over to the game section and low and behold there was a gray cart with games stacked on it and there was Donkey Kong Country 3 for the SNES brand new just sitting there not even put on the shelf yet and I grabbed a copy and bought it that day not even knowing it had released. That was an awesome weekend!
I've had a $75 gift certificate for Best Buy since Christmas before last and I STILL haven't used it because BEST BUY has jack shit unless I want kitchen appliances or a vacuum. Best Buy used to be one of my favorite stores when they sold media, now they are a appliance store
Um you know they have a website right? Also Best buy first and foremost is a common high tech store always was always will be... And I nebver heard of a best buy being so small i8t didn't have a massive media selction similar to wal mart or target but much better with the selction... But yeah like they hve a website you can use tghe gift vcard with... and it has the exact same selction even the biggest best buys do... That I though was normal... But I guess not?
Riff, you really try hard to tug at our hearts man! Great video as usual! Toys “R” Us and Kaybee Toys will always be the two stores that make me sad that they are gone. 😢
I'm so glad I was able to take my kiddos to Toys R Us before it closed down. Toys R Us had such a killer display back in the 80's and 90's era for consoles and games! Never forget!
As someone who is more than likely on ADHD/Austic spectrum the lack of sound drives me crazy. If I am at a party there needs to be sound it usually has to be loud because it will get boring. Even if a sound is loud and annoying It’s better than nothing.
I actually think we need to go back to spending at retail stores locally. There's an issue with online shopping, especially Amazon, where I worry about brand quality too much. At least in a brick and mortar store, you can see, touch and get familiar with a brand versus it being gone the next time you want it.
As a kid I my and nes and gambeboy from toys'r'us back in the day. That was childhood. The oldschool square box store with the vertical bar rainbow striped motif.
Woah. When did Target start having Gundam model kits? Granted it has been maybe a year since I was in my local one, but they never had those when I was there back then. Nor did they have that collector's section. The hood looks great, but frost? In CA? I get the no filming thing. Public place. People likely have caused issues with it for one reason or another. Some just don't like being filmed. The lack of display consoles to play and just fun music in general is sad, but I wonder if the lack of fun sounds may be an employee thing. Imagine working an 8 hour shift and the entire 8 hours you have to hear 1 game on loop that maybe nobody is playing, due to physical retail stores just not doing as well anymore. I used to work retail at a Macy's, which had no fun games or electronics, but even the loop of the music they played would get to me sometimes. Most of all in September, when they started doing Christmas things... yes, I said September... Christmas...
I walk in to Sam’s club and I notice only 1 monitor has no screen display and I turn it on and no screen showing from a soulless ad. It’s a LG that has apps with it as well so I set up for movies and let it display by true display instead of soulless ads. Just look like the days I remember when I go in Sam club way back. The next day I come in to check the monitor display and was set to soulless ad. Very disappointed to see that and it’s how they are doing like this today.
I went to Best Buy a couple days ago to help my dad find a laptop. Had a basic question about backlighting on the keyboard of one the laptops which proceeded into a 40 minute wait for the one guy in the PC section to finish up with the customer taking forever to get help. Ended up just rolling the dice and purchasing on my Best Buy app in store for my dad. All while several other Best Buy employees in other departments stood and chatted and couldn’t walk over and help one of us. Online shopping has just made it easier and I feel no need to go into one of these stores again…
True. I always research products on youtube before hand then order off amazon. The traditional retail experience takes too long to say there isn't anyone in these stores 90% of the time. I could go into best buy... and never need help 99% of the time and always get asked like 50 times if I need assistance, but the moment I go in there with the intention to buy something... it's always a long wait of finding an employee.
We would usually go to stereo system area and check out the speakers. You could play different car cd players and speaker combinations. Only best buy is an hour away I definitely haven't been there in over 15 years probably
It sucks that kids won’t get a real chance to experience a real toy store.. Growing up I use to love going to Toys R Us, FAO SChwarz the big one ( I forgot the location) but I still remember walking in seeing the toy soldiers, teddy bears, the ice cream shop etc… just walking around running from isle to isle, plus waiting for my chance top hop on the massive piano to play chopsticks, like from the movie Big ❤ great memories for me… The Kaybee toy store was another favorite place I use to enjoy going…. Its sucks… now kids gets Target and Walmart… I will always be a big kid so we will always go to the Nintendo store if you are in New York check that out, The Lego store, even the Harry Potter store too… Adults and kids will real enjoy it. I hated they got rid of the Toys R Us in Times Square… I know I’m not crazy about crowds but I would go there with my friend all the time… I loved seeing the kids enjoy the Ferris wheel while people shopped… my son was a baby and won’t remember it but I wish it was around still…
Do kids even play with toys anymore? It seems like all they care about is lego sets or gift cards for a live-service video game that offers tons of microtransactions. I went to an xmas gathering and I felt so disconnected & old when I saw a kid open a gift and it was just a $10 roblox gift card. They were excited about the gift, but I couldn't help feeling like what is left to show for it years later down the line.
When I was a kid walking around the toy stores is about all I did cuz we were broke lol. I'd say toy sections are actually better nowdays but the video game sections are shrinking with things moving to Digital games and alot of games being limited releases only nowdays make the video game section look empty, where as back in the day a game coulda cameout years ago and it kept getting printed thru the Greatest hits, Nintendo Selects, Player's Choice, etc. There's alot of Switch games I'd like to get but they were released a few years ago and apparently gone forever except on the secondary market or digital.
since target did the whole 'chose your own bathroom' thing years ago, i stopped going. i even ignore higher paying delivery offers for orders from target. anywho.... thanks for your videos
We still have regular full size Toys R Us stores in Canada. They just announced they're closing a few though so I'm sure down the line there's a chance it goes the way of the U.S stores. But in the meantime anyone who's looking for that nostalgia hit of walking into one I can't recommended enough if you have the means make a trip up here to go to one.
The point of self check out is to cheap out on the cost of paying a cashier. They also tried to cheap out on the quality of a self check out machine (Because why not?) Which is why there is always at least 1 cashier person. Yeah they have no personality but then again that's what they get for people they know are just there to cover bills and if they're lucky to get something else on the cheap too. And as far as my area, yeah there's a lot less there than there used to be in previous years, my target eliminated their bargain bin 2 years ago (seems to be a trend around here) and didn't donate their games to salvation army or value world or st Vincent de paul (all nearby thrift stores within a few blocks) Best buy isn't looking much better and Meijer is far worse (barely a handful of Physical games altogether and barely any selection of points/digital cards) Gamestop and Walmart are pretty much the best options around here (walmart barely changes up their bargain bin though their selection is decent in the shelfs)., Target basically keeps up with the new stuff and the popular itemw per game, their Xbox selection is pretty minimal by comparison to ps5/4 and switch though)
Target has always been my least favorite to shop for video games, movies, & cds Best buy was my go to for everything cuz' I hate walmart.. I'm sad they no long carry any physical media except for their sad selection of video games. Walmart is now my go to for 4k movies, blu-rays, & dvds... (if I can't find it at walmart... I'll go buy it on amazon) Gamestop - I started shopping here for the first time in over 15 years cuz' it's the only place I can find niche switch games local stores - pretty much where I go to find physical media lost to time. I buy my games digitally on pc, but I still shop for physical games for my switch. The selection of games for series x & ps5 doesn't offer me anything I can't buy on pc on a steam sale.
Yeah my first retail job was being a cashier at Kmart and go ahead and ask anyone born within the last 20 years if they even know of that name. I'm a relic of the retail past.
Went to a Best Buy to find accessories for my digital camera. I went for the customer service because I want to make sure I got the right stuff, not being knowledgeable about such things. Let me just say that the customer service aspect was lacking. It seemed to be anyoneon staff in that department. Guys coming and going from the back room just filling pre-orders or something. I ended up just buying online after doing my own research. Don’t know how they stay in business, frankly.
The magic is definitely gone. I used to go as a kid and just see what was there and hopefully grab something. As an adult, I basically only go when there’s something specific I want.
The downfall of in store shopping is a little depressing. Toy isles really not fully stocked most times. Toys R Us as a section in Macy’s definitely not the same. Hope you n the family n Squad doing well. 🙏🏼 prayers for LA and the fire victims.
From my understanding, Best Buy employees don’t get commission for sales. So I think that’s better, because they try to get you a great product in your price range you want to spend, rather than trying to upsell you and or anything like you mentioned.
Lack of selection of physical media... defeats the purpose of me going into best buy & target... walmart .. I'll pop my head in since they still carry movies & other physical media formats, but their selection is mid depending on the walmart I visit.
@b4rs629 agreed. It ends up snowballing. Less variety=less customers, less customers=less variety. I do love going to thrift stores and flea markets though. They always have interesting things
Tokyo stores still has that retail wonder. They’re stuck in the 2000s which I love lol if you walked into a store in Akihabara it’ll bring you back to the good days ahaha
first of all. there are hardly any customers in those shops you went to. and the great shopping experience. well, i suppose then we did not have so much money to go rogue as we can do now. there is also an overflow of goods we can choose from. i remember that i did not have original games, just copies. they were too expensive for us to buy. my adult neighbor got me hooked on video games and he gave me my first games that he copied on a floppy disk. today, people can choose from anything and buy from anywhere. usually online is the cheapest. and young people like to play online. they dont want to pay money for hard copies.
I was a teenager in the mid 80's and I STILL LOVE THE MALL. The giant mall in our area (not my orginial hangout mall, it's been closed for years) is still busy and nice. I hope it hangs on. I blame you Millenials for destroying brick and mortor. You guys want to stay home and order online. Booo
Storefronts aren’t making as much of the money off physical games as they want too so most establishments are cutting ties with physical media in general. We’re seeing this with movies, music and now games. Granted games are hanging on by a string of life support and is still somewhat kicking but I’m sure it won’t last long sadly. We’re in the depressing age of digital media and we can’t do anything but watch as we lose the stuff we love.

Hope the squad and your families are all safe with the fires.. prayers out for you the squad and all your families riff
After my local Best Buy got rid of physical media last year, they just replaced it all with overstock merchandise! Nothing interesting at all!
Best Buy is in alot of trouble and may not be around much longer.
Stay safe out there Riff!
First and foremost. Riff, hope you, the gang and your families are all safe during this time. Much love for the new video
I was thinking Riff is going to show walmart a 12 dozen eggs is now cost around 10 dollars because a month ago it was around 5 dollars. Now that is depressing too.
But aren't you glad Joe Biden's X'es are not mean?
One of my favorite Best Buy moments was way back in 1996 where my friend and I on a Saturday morning just decided to go there as he lived next a mall where Best Buy was and we strolled over to the game section and low and behold there was a gray cart with games stacked on it and there was Donkey Kong Country 3 for the SNES brand new just sitting there not even put on the shelf yet and I grabbed a copy and bought it that day not even knowing it had released. That was an awesome weekend!
Hope you guys are safe out there with the fires! Truly so sad
Love your dedicated videos, also love the Ryan trahan inspiration 🖤
Never seen a Target with half as much as that on the shelf. Usually empty pegs and shelves.
gracias sucks the situation for muchos things amigo
thank you for the upload ❤
I've had a $75 gift certificate for Best Buy since Christmas before last and I STILL haven't used it because BEST BUY has jack shit unless I want kitchen appliances or a vacuum. Best Buy used to be one of my favorite stores when they sold media, now they are a appliance store
Do you have air pod pros?
Um you know they have a website right? Also Best buy first and foremost is a common high tech store always was always will be... And I nebver heard of a best buy being so small i8t didn't have a massive media selction similar to wal mart or target but much better with the selction... But yeah like they hve a website you can use tghe gift vcard with... and it has the exact same selction even the biggest best buys do... That I though was normal... But I guess not?
@@GreenBlueWalkthrough you talking crazy man
can always transfer that gift card to a gift card (just spend the same $$$ that's on it to another like Gamestop.
Good video as always! Hope yall are staying safe!!
Never forget!
i love seeing places being that i am from the other side of the world (philippines). thanks for showing us around.
Hello from California my friend 🤍
The dance moves are incredible. You should do a full dedicated video to dancing in public.... Take us around and dance in random places lol
But im loving the nostalgic videos of you taking us around and remembering the good old days. Keep it up!
Omg hahaha I lowkey can’t 😝 I can do it for like 2 seconds when nobody is looking 🤣
Amazon is so funny, they were working on a feature that would allow you to shop shelves in VR 😂
Lol... I ain't trying to be around other virtual shoppers and simulate a self checkout waiting in line. Forget that.
Riff please never change. Keep doing your thing.
Hey Riff...I saw your cameo at the post office on iimpct media's channel!
As someone who is more than likely on ADHD/Austic spectrum the lack of sound drives me crazy. If I am at a party there needs to be sound it usually has to be loud because it will get boring. Even if a sound is loud and annoying It’s better than nothing.
“Sir, you cannot be filming TikTok’s in this store sir” 😂
i miss toys r us, kaybee toys, babbages, and og comic book stores.
I feel you on that one.🥹
Toys r us still in Canada.
I like that dumb and dumber toy. I like it A LOT 😂
I see what you did there 🤓
I actually think we need to go back to spending at retail stores locally. There's an issue with online shopping, especially Amazon, where I worry about brand quality too much.
At least in a brick and mortar store, you can see, touch and get familiar with a brand versus it being gone the next time you want it.
Lol that was my childhood best buy too! I would play hooky and go to the movies right in front
You might wanna put a fire 🔥 proof wall up around the game room
As a kid I my and nes and gambeboy from toys'r'us back in the day. That was childhood. The oldschool square box store with the vertical bar rainbow striped motif.
Fav Part Has To Be The Epic Riff Dance😂 16:48
🕺🕺
Target has a sick range of Exclusive TMNT stuff, which as a U.K. resident, I am very jealous of….
"That's why my physical media collection is now complete!" "Muahahahahahahaha!"
so you didn’t go to the K-Mart on Harbor? I used to pick up bangers from there!
Those Toys R Us cabinet top displays? They were mini versions of the floats in the Macy's Thanksgiving parade.
I really like this New Style of videos that are not from the Flea Markets - you’re Funny and Good Story Telling!! 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪
Apparently this triggered a memory for pammy where she almost got banned for hanging out too much in the magnolia theater section with friends lolol
5:57 Woaaah that super mario world mario & yoshi lego set is amazing!!😍
Im not a legos guy at all but thaaat mofo is bringing back memories!!🥰
5:56 These Street fighter jada toys figures are some of my favorites right now. They make mega man ones too! Highly recommend checking them out!😊
When he said "stop whatcha doing" i thought he was gonna start singing the humpty dance
🕺🕺🕺
I also can totally understand the excitement for that air duster
We would usually go to stereo system area and check out the speakers. You could play different car cd players and speaker combinations. Only best buy is an hour away I definitely haven't been there in over 15 years probably
My best buy ripped out all their DVD CD displays so no reason to go there anymore unless they start selling a larger variety of pokemon cards.
It sucks that kids won’t get a real chance to experience a real toy store.. Growing up I use to love going to Toys R Us, FAO SChwarz the big one ( I forgot the location) but I still remember walking in seeing the toy soldiers, teddy bears, the ice cream shop etc… just walking around running from isle to isle, plus waiting for my chance top hop on the massive piano to play chopsticks, like from the movie Big ❤ great memories for me…
The Kaybee toy store was another favorite place I use to enjoy going….
Its sucks… now kids gets Target and Walmart…
I will always be a big kid so we will always go to the Nintendo store if you are in New York check that out, The Lego store, even the Harry Potter store too… Adults and kids will real enjoy it.
Hopefully we can get a Pixel Game Squad Fire update video to know if anyone in the crew is being affected.
And as far as my area, yeah there's a lot less there than there used to be in previous years, my target eliminated their bargain bin 2 years ago (seems to be a trend around here) and didn't donate their games to salvation army or value world or st Vincent de paul (all nearby thrift stores within a few blocks)
Best buy isn't looking much better and Meijer is far worse (barely a handful of Physical games altogether and barely any selection of points/digital cards) Gamestop and Walmart are pretty much the best options around here (walmart barely changes up their bargain bin though their selection is decent in the shelfs)., Target basically keeps up with the new stuff and the popular itemw per game, their Xbox selection is pretty minimal by comparison to ps5/4 and switch though)
Target has always been my least favorite to shop for video games, movies, & cds
Best buy was my go to for everything cuz' I hate walmart.. I'm sad they no long carry any physical media except for their sad selection of video games.
Walmart is now my go to for 4k movies, blu-rays, & dvds... (if I can't find it at walmart... I'll go buy it on amazon)
Gamestop - I started shopping here for the first time in over 15 years cuz' it's the only place I can find niche switch games
local stores - pretty much where I go to find physical media lost to time.
I buy my games digitally on pc, but I still shop for physical games for my switch. The selection of games for series x & ps5 doesn't offer me anything I can't buy on pc on a steam sale.
I have a similar airblower to the one in the video. It‘s really useful to clean computers.
I use it legit daily. I’m super OCD with dust
Hitting those good nostalgia vibes 🥰
Dumb and Dumber find is awesome. My favorite movie!
I had to buy that!
That’s the south coast plaza Best Buy so of course it’s well kept and has the fancy sections. Most are not nearly that nice
Me: "Can we have flossing?"
Mom: "We have flossing at home"
The Flossing at Home: *16:48*
I’ll take it
Let's just hope these stores had more customers during the holidays, because otherwise they're all gonna close pretty soon.
Looks empty everywhere
Brick and mortar stores make me sad nowadays. Lack of variety, empty aisles, no midnight releases.
There was a switch right behind you to play when you said there are no systems to put your hands on. Ha!
Yooo is your van manual transmission?? If so i didnt think they would make vans like that in standard....
It’s auto 😝
Man you know what store I miss so much from my childhood Media Play what I would do to walk into that store again 😢
