- The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy rose to 38 with 29 more people losing their lives after consuming spurious liquor at Karunapuram in Kallakurichi on June 18, 2024.
The victims included four women and one transperson. Most of the victims are from Karunapuram and succumbed on Wednesday (June 19) night.

I won't accept that state govt is not responsible. If so gujarat govt is doing a better at handling liquor. They don't have liquor shops and that also is being serves nowadays only in 5 star hotel which gujratis are condemning. When that state govt can handle why can't tamilnadu govt. People got acquainted with liquor by kalaiignar who brought tasmac. Now people are going to cheap liquor like kalla sarayam as tasmac liquor price increased. If tamilnadu govt is really serious on people welfare ask them to reduce tasmac rates so that atleast people don't go to kalla sarayam.
