The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu has now reached nearly 60, sparking intense political fallout. Chief Minister MK Stalin is under fire, with the BJP demanding a CBI probe into the deaths and questioning why he hasn't met the victims and their families. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also called for a CBI inquiry, asserting that the truth about those responsible must come out. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs L Murugan criticized Stalin for not visiting the site even after three days. This tragedy has ignited a full-blown conflict between the NDA and the "India" bloc. Health Minister JP Nadda wrote to Mallikarjun Kharge, questioning the Congress party's silence and labeling the deaths as "state-sponsored murder." The BJP is pressing for Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to meet the victims. A Tamil Nadu BJP delegation, led by K Annamalai, met Governor RN Ravi, demanding the removal of Minister Thiru Muthuswamy. The AIADMK has also staged a protest, while the DMK is in damage control mode, with leaders like TKS Elangovan and RS Bharathi addressing the issue. The key question remains whether the Stalin government can evade responsibility for this tragedy.

When MGR became CM in 1977, he introduced total prohibition. Within no time, illicit liquor took hold of the state and in 1978 there were mass deaths due to poisoned illicit liquor. In response, MGR brought out cheap 'sealed arrack', which was nothing but diluted potable alcohol in plain 750 ml bottles with nothing but a customs seal on the cap. When bottling became expensive, the same arrack was sold in polythene sachets. This removed illicit liquor from the state. The government should bring such a cheap product to out-compete the illicit liquor instead of blaming the individuals who are just fulfilling a market demand by selling illicit liquor.
