  • A review of a variety of the many products that Olfa has to offer. They might not be as easy to buy as a Milwaukee Fastback, but these Olfa knives are great quality and wonderful to use. With such a large variety, they are sure to have a knife for you.
Great online site to buy that has the biggest variety I found.

The founder yoshio Okada invented the snap off blade in 59 and that’s where the company started… not rotary cutters. It’s also why olfa remains the best in the business

You are correct about the age. At the time I made the video, it might not have been on the website. It was two years ago. Thanks for providing additional info.

I have an OLFA XH-AL and after comparing it to a trapezoid knife usually called a Stanley knife I think the 25mm snap off knife is the best utility knife, as a complement I also have a 9mm knife with stainless steel blade for precision cutting/EDC and OLFA SK-9 safety knife.

I have two (18mm and 25mm) and absolutely love them. They’ve definitely replaced my Milwaukee Fastback and old DeWalt.

Nice review! I have found that the ratchet design is actually really nice for precision work. The ratchet clamps down the blade much better than the other types, especially when using non olfa brand replacement blades. This results in a more precise cut, less left-right wobble. Important for doing arts and crafts or precision cutting etc.
For those interested: You may actually use it one handedly if you use the side of your thumb to operate the ratchet.

Always need a 9mm bare body Olfa around. Aluminum 180 or stainless with auto lock.

Milwaukee was never the best and they are still far from the best. Olfa’s been making knives forever and they are still by far the very best.

You dont actually spin the wheel unless you absolutely have to, you just hold it in place with your thumb.

Olfa was founded in japan in 1956

@@TinkerWithTools When you say OLFA was founded in the 70s you are probably talking about the year Yoshio Okada invented the rotary cutter in 1979 but the snap off knife was invented in 1956.

I don’t know if you can get it in the US, but I think you will love the Tajima Quick back. It’s basically like the first one in your video plus the blade is spring loaded, so it snaps back. This is really handy if you are just cutting a box or something

Looks like I can get it on Ebay. I'll add it to my list to check out.

Thanks for the video. I often find I need to use a utility knife to cut through something stronger than paper or rope, such as plastic, drywall, or painted drywall; so I don't want to have to secure a sliding blade with my thumb. I need something to really lock the blade, and that lock not to come undone too easily or accidentally. So I always want a tightening wheel. For those of you who do without the wheel, do you find that any of the thumb slider type utility knives lock well enough to put sustained force on the blade? Maybe I haven't tried the right ones.

I do see the benefit of the locking wheel on certain applications. I actually just picked up the 25mm slider and so I’ll have to do some comparison on demanding tasks to see.

@@TinkerWithTools Right on, thanks, I look forward to that. Much appreciated. I have had locking slider mechanism utility knives in the past, but I found I kept unlocking it with my thumb by accident. Anyway, have a great day!

The Olfa looks like a 25mm version of the 18mm and 9mm utility knives-more comonly called "penknives" in Malaysia.

Olfa was making utility knives and blades way longer than the chinese Milwaukee stuff. Olfa invented the snap off blade.

I too prefer the sliding mechanism over rachet wheel. I think @iemeelemile comment is viable but I just prefer the ease of use of this sliding mechanism.
Also, where's the snap-off tool? I don't see the plastic part at the end that is used to remove the dull blade?

    • @guillaumepare9651

OK, I baught the LA-X. It's a quality product at a decent price. But:
      1) blade is slack. The pin that hold the blade is a tad too small and the slot where the blade come out is a tad too large.
      2) While it auto-lock, I don't feel safe with it as I find blade output can be changed too easily. I'd rather have a manual locking mecanism.
      3) The curved flat metal piece is not really useful IMHO.
Not a bad product except maybe for the blade being slack but I find it's more for some specific use, like someone who need to open and close the blade all the time. Too bad because in Canada, we' don't have all the sliding mechanism models.

That Touch Knife is VERY unsafe. I had it attached to my keys ring. Because it does not have a lock, I almost split my finger in half when I was hurrying to find the keys in my pocket. It should have some sort of lock, because that blade is very sharp.

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  Рік тому +1

I have thought about that. I carry it in pocket every now and then but normally not in my keys. The one I got I didn’t find that it would open all that easily so it felt like it would be unlikely to accidentally open in my cases. Maybe they aren’t all as stiff as the one I have.

    Сравниваешь жопу с пальцем!
Купи autolock на 25мм, тогда и сравнивай.
