  • Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896) was one of the most famous British artists of the Victorian age, establishing an international standing and reputation. His dedication to his art and the scope and ambition of his own painting won admiration and respect from his fellow artists.
In 1864 Leighton acquired a plot in Holland Park Road (Kensington, West London) and designed, alongside his architect, George Aitchison, his artist-home, which was extended throughout the years with additional spaces such as the iconic Arab Hall or a Winter Studio.
Leighton's house was constructed at the same time as that of his immediate neighbour Valentine Cameron Prinsep. By the time of Leighton's death, ten more artists had constructed purpose-built studio-houses in the area, forming a colony known as the Holland Park Circle.
