Jordan Fabrics is also a great place to buy fabric. Donna Jordan as well as Jenny Doan of the Missouri Star Quilt Company also have some great videos on making quilts (and other goods, but mostly quilts).

Jordan Fabrics puts together their own precuts and some kits as well. Their cutting, done by co-owner Matt Jordan (Donna’s husband), is the best.

Hi, Erica. When discussing yardage for backings, you forgot to mention 108" fabric. I usually buy 3 yards and I love that I don't need to piece it.

I’m making a queen sized rail fence quilt with three jelly rolls. They have enough for the top and binding. I love that vintage picnic print!! Would love to see the whole line. Now I’ll have to look those up. 🥴 Precuts and all the names was confusing when I first started quilting. I love white print on print for my background and sometimes my backing. I rarely use total solids. I thought it was great that you explained that there are many shades of white. Thank you for such a thorough explanation. I love precuts! 👩‍🌾💛🌻😊

I started out buying "generic" fabric because I was "learning" and didn't consider myself a "quilter" yet. So many mistakes were compounded because the fabric was thin, moved, bad weave....I am just now getting more confidence to buy better fabric, names, designers. I don't know if I can "feel" yet. I agree on the whites. I have that problem this week--only one row of sashing and none to be found. I also found mixing "charms" is not good. Never heard that they are not the same either. So much to learn.

Wish you would update this video to reflect the current prices, which went up a lot! I will use up what fabric I have in my stash and then will put my machine on sale. I can't afford fabric now. They took all the joy out of shopping for patterns and being able to purchase the fabric for it even living under the poverty line. $11 to $20 a yard, + taxes and shipping online is to double the price of a yard. Local small shops are $5 to $12 more for a yard. All fabric went up in price during Covid! Precuts are are way expensive. $50 to $65 a jelly roll is crazy!

Great video, Erica! You explained everything thoroughly. I make a lot of project and other bags and love using precuts, especially mini and charm size packs. The charm packs (5x5) are actually the most economical for what I do as I use 2 1/2” squares and I can get four out of every piece. So now I have to ask - you don’t have any Blackbird Designs fabric laying around you want to sell, do you? I am always on the lookout for some of it! Thanks for a great video! 😊

Fat quarter shop also has a bolt discount. You just put in comments box "bolt discount please" they figure it and adjust you order. Some other's may too so don't be afraid to ask. You didn't mention that some precuts I am thinking of the charm packs I have ordered lately have more than one print to them. Lori Holt's fabric precuts have different names so just read the description. Thanks for the great video Erica I went out to Catching stitches subscribed and then to your site love love the Farmhouse fall and CherBerry patterns..... Had to place a order!!!!!! The prices here in Canada, are way more for precuts! Prices have more than doubled here, since I started quilting back in 2000.... Layer Cakes and Jelly rolls by Moda are $60 each...Charm Square Packs about $16-$18.... Our group has missed going down to the States for our supplies, as we are 5 min. from the border.. and a good 50 minute drive to Bellingham...so under an hour! Border still closed for us....but look forward to heading down soon... The Tuesday Morning Store has good pricing on a small selection of precuts.

I recently purchased your Winterberry pattern and chose a red fabric from my local Joann's. I accidentally spilled some water on the fabric after I made the star block, and to my horror, the red bled into the white. I wanted to cry! Then I saw you had the same issue and felt so much better. I only have the mittens to make and then stitch the quilt top together and put on the backing, and then into my tub it will go. Thank you for documenting your journey with saving your quilt! I'm so glad there's a way to save mine. I appreciate all your quilting content, thank you so much!

The one drawback on pre-cuts is the cost per yard you are paying. They have many advantages I agree, but you do pay for the convenience and the variety.

That is correct, and why I continue to buy pre-cuts :) I prefer the convenience and variety that come in the packs!

@@erica_arndt me too! And it’s not excessively more money. A layer cake is about 2.75 yards total and about $40 in the US. That’s only roughly $10 more than 2.75 yards of the same print, which is definitely worth it to me. The smallest amount you can buy is usually a quarter yard (once I found a shop offering 1/8 of a yard strips) and buying 42 mostly different 1/4 yards would be very expensive. It is more fabric of course but also does not offer the versatility of a layer cake square since it’s only 9” long.

Enjoy your videos. I also like Villa Rosa, they are super nice. I also use Keepsake quilting, they have some good deals too. I've learned most everything from utube and have made around 15 quilts while staying home from the covid pandemic.
