  • My car wouldn't start without jumper wires, so I assumed that my ignition switch gave up. I followed the wiring diagram, but then I discovered the real problem after I took everything apart. Oh well...Now I have a newish looking Porsche 356 ignition switch. YAY!

    Tom, nice video. I found that removing the circlip can be done quickly by using a pin punch on the back of the tumbler shaft and giving it a sharp rap with a hammer, forcing the circlip up and out of the groove. This doesn’t work if someone has been there before with screwdrivers and sharp tools and they have damaged the end of the shaft. I wonder how the factory did it, I have never seen a pair of circlip pliers that would work.

      Well the factory never took anything apart, which is harder in this case🤣
      I'm surprised at myself for not whacking the tumbler shaft with a hammer because it's my go to tool for almost everything.
      I'm glad it works and now I know.

    Thanks for taking the time to film. I have watched your videos and it has help me. Just bought a ignition switch with a key that doesn’t go all the way in on eBay to save money and this video will help a lot. Had the car since July and I have most of the rust issues fixed. This 356 has been wrecked and rolled over and picked apart bare. Pretty much a junk yard car The only good thing it has never been repaired by someone else except for a cheap paint job from the 70s with a little bondo.. Shooting to get it done by late summer of next year Thanks again

      Welcome to the club! My 911 was a wrecked shell when I started. Best of luck and reach out if you need anything.

      Bummer, I just got the ignition switch from eBay. You can tell it was never disassembled. The seller claims that the key that he made for it wouldn’t go all the way in. So I took the chance. I took it apart and by your video I realized that the Bakelite main body was broken in the center Bakelite shaft where the washer rides against. So the key couldn’t go in because there was no tension on the cylinder to push it out to allow the key to go in and out Also the tension spring housing had a broken paw. I have yet not found a glue that is strong enough to fix something like that. Glue Smith glue I have used in the past works great but I really don’t want to take that chance. If I didn’t see your video l would probably took it to a locksmith and pay him just for him to tell me that he can’t fix because it’s all broken up inside . Thanks again for taking the time to make videos on your restoration on your cars

      Sorry to hear about your broken switch. Maybe the ask the eBay seller for a return or partial refund?

      @@GarageTimeAutoResto I bought a few items from this seller and his descriptions is always accurate. He had a key made up using the key code on the housing. The key didn’t go all the way in. It was sold as is and I was the highest bidder at 50 bucks. No big deal and I was going in blind. You can tell that it wasn’t messed with. No hammer marks or forced entry. After I sent you the last message I decided to use the Glue Smith glue I mentioned on the broken paw and tried to put a bit of tension on it and it didn’t break. So I decided to tackle the center shaft that was totally broken in pieces and missing the center spring. I layer the glue with baking soda and a bit of silica sand and drilled it out used a spring from my spring collection and assembled it together and it seems to work nicely. Only took all day and pounding my head against my work bench . If you didn’t do your video I would of not known how that center piece looked like and it would be a total fail. Not sure if I will use it but I have a lot of time messing with it before it gets installed
      Thanks again

    Nice job. Your tool making skills are really impressive. I tend to learn the hard way. Would have snapped the tabs and cracked the insulator for sure.

    Love this kind of stuff. Those "simple" repairs that aren't so simple. Taking stuff apart that was never really designed to be refurbished and making it like new. I've never seen Sil-Glyde in a spray can (17:04). I love that stuff, too! And, brilliant idea for getting that ring clip back on!

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  Рік тому

      Yeah, not meant to be taken apart. New ones are about $225 which isn't as bad as 911 ones. I'd rather put that money towards chrome, which is something I'm not equipped to do.
      sil-glide is great. Made this lock mechanism work very well!

    No way , I was planning on doing this with my VW ignition switch, the switch failed and the starter kicked in while the engine was on , ripped some teath off the starter with the flywheel.

      This one is from Greg Bryan. Not sure if he has an early 911 version or not. I'll ask him. I have questions about his diagram as you now know.
