Well, it happened. This is now the most viewed video on my channel! I honestly did not expect so many views all of a sudden, and even though I'm a little late for Thanksgiving, I can say that I'm very thankful for all the support I've gotten on this video. Since I can't make community posts, I'll ask a question here. Should I make another ranking video like this one some time in the future? If so, what should I rank? Ranking videos are fun to make, but I feel like I should get some input before making another. Again, thanks a lot everyone, I really mean it

For one thing, congrats on landing a combo on every single beat. I've beaten the game, but I couldn't do all of these no matter how much I practiced. This was a great video!
For another... hm, not sure what other rankings you could do. Just concerning Mother 3 stuff, maybe you could rank all enemies and/or bosses by difficulty. Or rank battle songs just by how much you subjectively enjoyed each one, because some are just fine for what they are, and others are legit masterpieces.
I thank you because this helps me figure out how combos even work in this game. Some of these are so hard! And the characters' attack sounds really throw me off...

Technically, you're not supposed to be able to combo him, because of his time signature, and the fact that there's no heartbeat track to practice to, but it's theoretically possible, if you're a beast like this guy lol
You can. But it's only possible to attack combo him after he pummels Flint with PK Love Omegas.

Honestly that’s the hardest part.
Duster's base helped me to combo's a lot more than the others. I just couldn't do any combo's with anyone other than duster.
I would love a Mother 3 rom hack that did just that
Yea idk why there are only 3 combo sounds either, it not only makes 16 hit combos less satisfying but makes combos harder for 80% of the songs due to the way the character instruments adjust for speed. Maybe they didn't have the space for the sound files, the game does push the hardware to its limit in terms of sound design.

Absolutely true, it's so hard to combo despite besing the very first music of the game, I struggle with fate and serious a lot too, evn though I don't know the difference between them
@@awakening7612 Pretty sure Serious literally adds a total of one note that isn't important when combining whatsoever
@@oneup117gaming4 Serious just adds an extra instrument. The actual heartbeat doesn't change. Actually the bass in the background is actually playing in the same rhythm as the heartbeat in both tracks.

I appreciate this a lot on account of me being a complete musical ignoramus who wouldn't even know the difference between timpani and tempo, or between beat and rythm. Hearing it broken down by someone with an actual knowledge of music is interesting!

5:12 fun fact, did you know mr batty twist actually has a very slight slowdown? It happens at around the same spot that porky’s porkies does.
Just fact-checked this using the ACTUAL SEQUENCES FROM THE ROM and yes, it's true! I actually never noticed that! The BPM goes from 168 to 158 for a measure, and then returns to 168 again. I thought it was just Porky's Porkies that did this.

It would help to understand rhythm and time signatures specifically
you only need a sense of rhythm i know nothing about music and can pull most of these off
you'd think so but it's really about finding out what the game thinks the beat is, not what the actual rhythm of the song is
This is kind of an old comment so I'll just say that I think at times the combos alternate between rhythm and tempo.
Fun fact! You can actually combo to It Is Finished.
Of course, without hacking this is impossible, but with some pretty simple cheats you can get into an encounter with two foes and have the leader be the Masked Man, which causes It Is Finished to play; then, you just try and combo the other guy.

For some reason I've always struggled with Back Beat Battle. I think it's because it kind of has an "off-beat" rhythm that makes it sound like you're trying to go for something else. Anyone else have the same struggle?
back beat battle was the hardest one for me, mainly because i felt like the beat is too slow

I was doing some combos of Battle Against the Masked Man, and I learned that the beat for the song actually goes into half time during a distorted version of the love theme for about 16 beats or so. I’m fairly certain this is the only tempo change in the entire song, and only makes the song more difficult if you’re trying to 16-hit combo the song
Also, even after the turn the Masked Man attacks Flint, you’re still able to combo the song until the flashback
Interesting, I did not know that. I just ended up spamming save states to retry the combo on that one turn after Flint gets attacked.
One thing i hate about disscusion of this Fight is that nobody talks about how great of a Storytelling choice it is that Lucas can attack after Claus hurt his dad

Well tbf the game gives no clear indication that thats the case, plus the fact that Masked Man bombards you with so much damage you're basically pidgeon holled into spamming Lifeup Y for the fight, so chances are barely anyone noticed it

I've actually got a 16 hit combo on Fate, it was fairly simple (half an hour of time well spent)
Me with a 15 on Serious
My emulator had a problem with audio sync so I had to learn to combo using difficult syncopated offbeats but it was very satisfying to pull off
use mGBA and if your hardware is capable enough, use both Audio and Video sync. It is worth the extra audio crackling (unless it's undoable due to slow hardware)
I hope this makes sense but what I do is move around in the battle menu and hear for the little sound effect it makes, and then match the sound to the beat rather than the button press itself
Gotta love how Toppling March is one of the hardest songs to combo, and they gave that song to the Trees.

I didn't expected someone having the same opinion on Bothersome Guys as me. Man, for some reason I feel this one is off sync, and pressing the button consistently is actually pretty hard, I think it's the only one I didn't managed to get a 16-hit combo on.

It looks easier to me when you pay attention specifically to the hit effects on the enemy rather than anything else, assuming it keeps repeating that one pattern.
Love how the second hardest to combo is the first boss you battle in M3, whereas the hardest is the very last boss in the _series._

I always found Fate/Serious to be one of the easier combos to pull off, the only issue is the VERY LOUD AND OBVIOUS 4/4 percussion at the end of the theme that, despite being the beat, isn't the heartbeat.

Loved the little musical analysis of each song as you described its difficulty. I’ll definitely be using the time signature information the next time I play because I’ve always just tapped my foot to the beat, without actually bothering to count in time

Just got a 6-hit combo on Back-Beat Battle!
Great video, but unfortunately you actually missed 2. However, they actually can only be heard in battle. Specifically A 16-Beat Attack!, and A Marching Attack!, both of which can only be heard when fighting the beaten drum.
He also missed the melody of the 2nd phase of the 2nd Masked Man encounter which is normally impossible to combo
I actually find Mambo De Battle plus really easy, but yea I do agree with Dry Guys holy crap is that hard
Yeah, there’s just something about mambos that always messes me up, even outside of Mother 3. I have trouble staying in time when we play mambos in my school’s band. I guess I’m just cursed lol. Dry Guys is fun once you get the hang of it.

I like how the final boss theme is difficult to combo for both story and gameplay reasons: not only is it constantly offbeat and discordant, not even your character is able to attack someone so close to them.
The only highest combo I got on back beat battle was 2. and then I violently died to a flying mouse
strong one is the only thing that kept me grinding the heftyheads. its just so fun to combo to. also accelerondo and stringent

Interestingly enough, the first combo I got that was more than three was on Bothersome Guys (8-hit). However, when I recently dropped using an emulator and began using an actual GBA for a new playthrough, Mr Batty Twist has been the easiest so far.
For me it's Intense Guys.

No way you're going up to me saying that Back Beat Battle is the easiest theme to combo to.
if I'm really paying attention, I can pretty consistently get 4 hit combos on almost any piece, but anything beyond that is pretty much outside the scope of my capabilities, idk if my simulator screws up the beat timing a bit or if I just suck in general, but frankly just spamming PK Love n' Freeze seemed to work out ok in the end
I remember on my playthru hardly ever getting past like 2-4 with these. BUT I will say playing on a keyboard with a emulator did NOT help most likely. so yeah, I can say this was an aspect of the game I didn't really dive into much. didn't realize at ALL how in depth it can get with timing some of these. even if you don't like the music, you gotta admit it's well composed for the purpose of the game itself.

Rock and Roll (Spicy) is my favorite song to combo to, the tempo change is really satisfying to get, and also it's just a banger. I've listened to it so many times that I mess up on Mild quite a bit because I anticipate the tempo change.

Got the best Lucas Keytar variation, started at the beginning of the measure with 2 beats so the legato could be heard on the next 2 beat measure, AND the melody allowed to finish from a G to a C for resolution. It's beautiful.

I super agree with Bothersome Guys(#2). I managed almost every other notes 16 combos quite well but this theme drived me crazy. I feel like it has narrower time for accepting note as valid.

13:27 #8 was my first 16 hit combo. I always thought of it as: 1 2 - 1 2 3 - 1 2 3 4 - 5 6. But even that took me more than one playthrough to do.

I've never had trouble with either but tbh I feel Back Beat Battle and More Mischievous Blues should be switched bc I know hitting the offbeats can be tricky at first for alot of people and a slightly higher bpm really isn't too important

I find it funny how you list back beat battle first. I thought it was simple (and…it is), but it’s now become the most difficult song for me to combo, besides battle against the masked man and stuff like that.
Does this have the two that only play when the drum enemy changes the beat and you can't find in Battle Memory because enemies don't act there, I can't find it?

I never though of Dry Guys and Even Drier Guys as hard themes to combo, and I'm honestly impressed you put Fate/Serious before Even Drier Guys. Also, the guitar in Back Beat Battle also made me confused at first, since it makes you think you should base your combos on the, well... "back" beats, so I wouldn't say it's the easiest theme. Great video, though!
Yeah I noticed a lot of people saying the same thing about Back Beat Battle. It was probably just easier for me because I’m a band kid 🤓 and I usually end up playing the downbeats while other instruments play the up beats so I’m used to that kind of feeling. I feel like the thing that makes Fate/Serious and Dry Guys/Even Drier Guys hard is the instrument sounds because they sound really weird when you combo to a specific rhythm like that.
@@four.four.four. I'm also musically inclined, the confusion with Back Beat Battle was just a first time thing. I still think it's one of the easiest ones :P
And yeah, the instruments DO sound weird with specific rhythms like in those songs, but it didn't affect the difficulty that much for me. I think Fate/Serious is harder because the heartbeat is more complicated and requires faster button presses than Dry Guys and Even Drier Guys (which also makes the instruments sound even weirder than these last two)

Pork Tank was the first Enemy I ever 16-hit comboed. I was so impressed, then watched this video and realised its the third easiest. 😂😂😂

I don't know how to combo but I did a 6 combo spamming A in Bothersome Guys. I was surprised but then I returned to the 1 or 2 combo by spamming

The only time I struggle with bothersome guys is when fighting the Mole Cricket. He apparently has frame perfect timing everything after either the 7th or 10th hit.

This is really unrelated, but why does Duster's bass sound different in your game?
An older version of the translation patch only had one version of Duster's bass, and there's an updated version that added the others.

@@ender691 The actual bug is that Duster only used one of his several variations of his bass combo sound (this bug was also present in the Japanese version as well oddly enough). The English 1.2 and 1.3 versions and onwards have since fixed this, so all of his bass sounds are audible.
I'm interested in the wide array of damage an enemy takes. Like you go from hundreds to single digits pretty quickly sometimes.

I think bothersome guys is an easy one but I respect your opinion
Back beat battle is one of the hardest ones, not because its hard to get it, but because its very hard to start one before the hame wont let you due to its very slow tempo
I think Bothersome Guys is too high up in the list, considering it's right next to Toppling March, something I always had trouble with. I would put it closer around 30-39 imo.
I notice you didn't include the 16 beat attack or the marching attack that the drum uses.

My attempts to do even small combos usually failed, as I think I have zero idea of what tempo is. I usually hit the button way too fast, sometimes 3 times faster than needed
