    BTW, had a friend who lost a finger doing just what you did with the drill press. Bit grabbed and spun a sheet metal conduit clamp, catching his finger and ripping the tendon out halfway to his elbow. Trigger finger on his left hand wrapped around the drill bit in a flash

    This is so incredible! I had later revision of those construction sets and playing with those were fun as well, but I never imagined that in 1930 it was so complex design.

    You continue to astound me with your craftsmanship. Absolutely amazing. I used to play with Meccano as a kid and I forgot it was green. Cheers, JAYTEE

    Hi. did you include the three small indents around the pummel hole as shown on the drawing? I simply use a round needle file to replicate them when making the part - just a few seconds extra work. They are there to reduce the possibility of the pummel eventually losing its grip and rotating in it's hole, and it will without the small indents as metal is forced into these when pressing the pummel into the strip to act as locating lugs preventing rotation under power.

    • @myfordboy
      @myfordboy  5 років тому

      I did not make the 3 indents but used loctite on the joint.

    Oh, my friend, I cringed at the 29 second mark while watching you hold that piece in your bare hand while drilling. How many times I have had a drill bit catch such a light piece and turn it into a finger grinder. OUCH.

      Agreed. And it's so easy to screw a hold down toggle clamp to some scrap wood for jobs like this.

    Myfordboy - any chance of a short autobiography? I'm amazed at all you can do, and curious how you arrived at this point. And I'm a big fan, always enjoy your videos and learn a lot watching them.

      OK, here goes. I have always made things. As a boy I had Meccano and spent many hours on the carpet with this. Later It was model aircraft and RC cars and finally model engineering. I like to make everything myself so this led to the casting.
      My working life was spent as an electrician. I am entirely self taught in engineering from books. My philosophy is if you really want to do something you can. I make something every day.

    A while ago I bought a Amadeal tailstock wanting a sturdier improved unit. I had trouble centering the dead center. I tried a number of things to get it to work properly for me with variable success.
    Recently I went back in to try to determine why the tailstock base would lift off the front vee. I found the "T nut to be machines slightly wrong. The threaded hole was out of place by 20 thou or so so when the clamp lever drew down it pulled the tailstock to the rear instead of straight down. milled the sides of the "T" nut to give o more room t pulstraight down when clamped. This was a total success.
    Until I need to set the tail stock off center farther to the rear away from the tool post.
    I added set screw/ grub screws to the right end of the tail stock to keep the upper part of the tail stock in place while adjusting the tailstock to center, this helped some during the centering adjustment.
    Over all I am still pleased with the Amadeal tailstock purchase.
    THanks

      Glad to hear you sorted it but should not have to do this with a new a lathe, or is just the tailstock you are fitting to another lathe?

      I have a homier speedway 7 x 12 mini lathe. This is one probably made 10-12 years ago. I have been picking at the deficiencies which is why I ordered the Amadeal tail stock. I found Amadeal through you and your web site.

    Hi, I have a couple of old meccano instruction manuals/things to build paperback i guess you could call them, I would be happy to send them to you as I stupidly gave away my meccano years ago. Would be good to see them be useful again.

    How did you get those stampings? (8:10)

    • @myfordboy

      They are not stampings they were cut and machined from sheet steel.

      Yes I realize that, I watched the video. I mean each piece has Meccano stamped on it, the original piece would only be stamped once.

    • @myfordboy
      @myfordboy  5 років тому

      @@michaelberg9656 Those parts were cut from a longer strip and a brass plummel added, that's how they were stamped.

    • @michaelberg9656
      @michaelberg9656 5 років тому

      OK, looking more closely I see that only some of the cranks shown bear the label "MECCANO MADE IN ENGLAND", that is what I was referring to, and what we call "stamping". I guess those ones are originals that you didn't make. The ones you did make don't have anything written on them. Am I correct?
      Mystery solved, great work, and a very interesting video, it makes me want to own a lathe so bad!! :)

    As a child I had fun with an "Erector set". Probably a rip off of Mecano.
    THe early sets I used were pretty good quality, edges smooth etc. The last I bought for my kids was poor. Very sharp edges etc. Made from the same dies I guess.
    Thanks

    • @BrightBlueJim
      @BrightBlueJim 6 років тому

      Yes, Erector brand was a Meccano rip-off. But I don't think it used Whitworth threads, so they probably aren't interchangeable.

    • @myfordboy

    This looks like a lot better version of an erector set that we had here in the states that I played with for hours maybe 60 years ago that and I still have some of it left.

    • @BrightBlueJim

      A LOT better. When I was 8 or 10, I couldn't figure out what I could even MAKE from that crap (Erector). It's one of the few mechanical or electrical building kits I never bugged my parents to get me for Christmas.

      Legos are made of ABS, so sure, you could grind broken/damaged ones into pellets, then injection mold new ones. Don't know how well they could be 3D printed, though.
