For anyone wondering. This is the cam mounted vacuum pump. The sediment in your engine builds up in it no matter how often you change the oil. Eventually it seizes and explodes. The brakes will stop working (hopefully you aren’t driving) and little metal bits will be deposited into your crankshaft. This thing is like $70 I encourage you to change it annually.
I do not know about exploded but the brakes on mine were pulsating. Some people say it fails due to poor oil but i run a synethic blend had to change mine at 60k , took maybe 20mins to change or less. Other problems I have is the windshield water pump has failed. It looks like a tuff job to get to it. Also my dash handfree switch failed. And the turn signal indicator fail. all in 60K or less. USA cars are joke and made bad. if this was a camry it would still be running good at 200K miles;)

My 2019 Malibu was awesome, it just got super slow during hot days. It wouldn’t take off in 1st gear properly but then would kick in during the end of the 1st gear before shift. I always did check ups and top offs

Just changed mine last week and it’s was blow into pieces and went into the engine. Luckily my neighbor is a mechanic and saved us some money. We took everything apart, opened the engine (or whatever it is) and recovered the fragments. We put them back together and it was all there before reversing the process and connecting the new pump.

People bring there yukons, silverados, sierras in for an oil change. Go to stop and the pedal is hard as a rock with no assist. Theres a recall on those pumps up to 100k miles.

Same issue, replaced mine and had to aligned the shaft back to its proper position in the motor, worked like brand new again. Now I’m having issues with the car shutting off at every stop light or when on idle. Any ideas or recommendations?
Low battery voltage will cause the car to not restart after every stop and start run the car in sequential mode until you get a chance to change the battery
I had 175 K miles on my 2016 premier. The pump went out while I was on a road trip. Engine light didn't come on or warning. Got off an exit for gas and car wouldn't stop had to use Emergency Breaks. Once I got to the gas station safely there was oil all under the car and rear bumper. After letting the car cool off, checked the oil and there was hardly any oil on the dipstick. I had to put oil so I could get home. The pump plus seal was $142. After taking the valve cover off to check for fragments my brother noticed there was some play in the shaft. Needless to say after that I decided to trade her in just didn't want to deal with any other issues that may arise.
Have you ever had any needed repairs on it? We have city roads but have has suspension, wheel bearing, axle issues and now friendly chevy is wanting 4000 to work on a timing chain
If it only has 15k miles and is almost 22 years old, it really just depends on how the car had been stored because it obviously hasn't been driven too much, my 2019 has 47k
There is a problem on many Malibus where on the back of the engine there are 5 bolts have loosened and there is a huge vacuum leak, can be easily fixed though
I got a 2019 Malibu 1.5 turbo at my shop now that needs this vacuum pump for the brake booster. Gm needs to recall this issue because it's a life threatening issue. No brakes means death or very serious injuries.
Happened to both my wifes and mine , 2.0 and 1.5. Regular oil changes and maintenance. Vacuum pump ran off the cam. Sad thing is they were both made in China. Little to say GM owns both off them now.

Probably the engine cover. It's a rubber seal where the throttle body is and the rubber wears out over time and gets stuck in the throttle body causing the issue.
I just got mine done last Wednesday come Friday my serpentine belt popped too got it fixed Saturday now my car is leaking gas under the hood smh can’t win for shit wit these cars
Vacuum pump. Poor design. Attached to cam shaft with a small nipple, under the valve cover. The pump seizes and sheers the small metal nipple, you are lucky if the small nipple doesn’t trash the cams or valve train. Stop buying Chevy.

And I have put so many hours into trying to find out why or how to fix it, but apparently no one else has made a video, post, nor a arrival about how to fix this. And the Chevy place charges 100 just to inspect it and find the problem and I don’t want that. But it’s looking like my last resort

My customer had a 2016 Malibu Hybrid. I feel sorry for him that ain’t nobody know how to fix his car except me. The dealer he takes it to does not know how to work on hybrid. It has an intermittent problem in which the hybrid battery sign would turn gray and car would start draining the hybrid battery until it is completely empty unless he catch on time in which he has to tow it to my shop to charge the hybrid battery again. It stem from his 12 volt battery failing and starving all electronic components of electrical power. Right now it’s in my shop while I’m trying to figure out what is going on

Sorry dude, change your voltage regulator, and you won't have these issues! 2020 lt owner at 90,000 miles! It collects dust, corrosion and burned oil/sludge that builds up in the throttle body butterfly and plastic (long black hose connected to throttle)coolant hose. That's where all the oil your car loses is going if you didn't know!
I just bought a used 2030 with 30000 miles. It stalls in first gear then it will "catch" and be find after that. It sounds like the vacuum pump is the problem. Engine and trans are fine going down the road.
Mine got 100,000 at the beginning of the year and so far, the catalytic converter had to be switched out, Vacuum pump, oil sensor, 02 sensor, and it's only beginning. These cars are shit after 100,000. Getting rid of this shit at the beginning of the year.

You won't have this. I have an 11 and that gen only has 3.6 or 2.4 engine. This is 9th generation and I believe they are either 2.0 or 1.5 and I believe this is the 1.5

If anybody could help me out it would be appreciated, I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu max. I changed the shifter cable in it and now my key will not come out of the ignition, And the security code is all screwed up now. It is not allowing the car to shift into third gear or overdrive, unlocked the car. The check engine light shuts off. I can't go any further Then the light comes back on with traction control saying it shut off. If anyone can help me, please let me know. I don't know if it's a security system thing But it would be nice to get the key out. It had no problem coming up before I changed the Shifter cable..😟☹️🤯🤯🤯

My 2018 Malibu is under 73k And my check engine light just came on. Hoping it's just needing a tune-up. Oil changes are consistant.

130k on my 2020 Chevy Malibu and just had to change this for the first time they had to use a magnetic to get the metal pcs out of the engine that has broken off the camshaft now I may be looking at replacing that 🙄

I just replaced the vac pump and the exhaust cam also. The pump went and had taken the cam with it.

My customer had a 2016 Malibu Hybrid. I feel sorry for him that ain’t nobody know how to fix his car except me. The dealer he takes it to does not know how to work on hybrid. It has an intermittent problem in which the hybrid battery sign would turn gray and car would start draining the hybrid battery until it is completely empty unless he catch on time in which he has to tow it to my shop to charge the hybrid battery again. It stem from his 12 volt battery failing and starving all electronic components of electrical power. Right now it’s in my shop while I’m trying to figure out what is going on
I have a 2020 Chevy Malibu 1.5 and my gas won’t stay in the car. It only recently start happening & can’t figure out why. I have put gas treatment and sea foam motors treatment in it today. Hopefully this helps. Any advice?

I have a 2020 Malibu RS already replaced the battery, battery relay on top of battery, compressor and alternator twice now replacing the serpentine belt (alternator belt)
Sorry dude, change your voltage regulator, and you won't have these issues! 2020 lt owner at 90,000 miles! It collects dust, corrosion and burned oil/sludge that builds up in the throttle body butterfly and plastic (long black hose connected to throttle)coolant hose. That's where all the oil your car loses is going if you didn't know!

2001 had a lot problems with the water pump I've had three put on it
I just bought a used 2030 with 30000 miles. It stalls in first gear then it will "catch" and be find after that. It sounds like the vacuum pump is the problem. Engine and trans are fine going down the road.

Mine got 100,000 at the beginning of the year and so far, the catalytic converter had to be switched out, Vacuum pump, oil sensor, 02 sensor, and it's only beginning. These cars are shit after 100,000. Getting rid of this shit at the beginning of the year.
And air intake problems keep engine light on even after I keeping changer censor and all
So any one have real knowledge on this cause my 2018 1.5 turbo ecotech just threw 4 cods camshaft, crankshaft, and map sensor. Replace the. All and still the same codes come up. Can the vacuum pump cause this? Cause my brakes are hard to push

The vacuum pump controls brakes and if it breaks off it can cause a world of issues im elbow deep in mine right now I've replaced everything at my wits end

Remove mass air flow, spray the maf with carb cleaner, wipe clean problem solved in 5 to 10 minutes

If anybody could help me out it would be appreciated, I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu max. I changed the shifter cable in it and now my key will not come out of the ignition, And the security code is all screwed up now. It is not allowing the car to shift into third gear or overdrive, unlocked the car. The check engine light shuts off. I can't go any further Then the light comes back on with traction control saying it shut off. If anyone can help me, please let me know. I don't know if it's a security system thing But it would be nice to get the key out. It had no problem coming up before I changed the Shifter cable..😟☹️🤯🤯🤯
Adjust the cable so the car can go into park properly to release the key
