I have a vague memory of my father taking me to an airfield when we were travelling from CFB Esquimalt to CFB Halifax when I was about 2 years of age. He was in the RCN and had been re-assigned, so the family took a trailering trip across Canada in a yellow Shasta Trailer. We stopped outside of this airfiled and I remember him saying that something very important was happening there. We parked for awhile and I remember hearing and seeing a jet aircraft take off in the distance . Then my father drove us away and onward to our next destination. The time of the trip and locations we drove through seem to fit the Arrow test flight schedule so in my mind that jet will always be the Arrow.

I think it only flew from Malton airport (now Pearson) so either it was there, or perhaps Trenton (if it ever landed there). Great memory BTW.

@@mikejaynekennedy4790 As I was very young I don't know the exact route we took except that we visited with relatives on the Prairies, Winnipeg, multiple Ontario locations including the Toronto region and Hamilton, Detroit, and then onto the Maritimes. It was a month long relocation trip so I imagine we were on the road for at least three weeks with our blue '52 Ford (Bluebell) and the Yellow Shasta travel trailer (Buttercup). Vehicle nicknames in brackets. I know from pictures that we crossed the border with the US a number of times during the trip but since my parent are long passed it's only pictures and memories that tell the story. Unfortunately no pictures of the Arrow flight. I remember that when we came back after six months we were assigned to CFB Matsqui in British Columbia which was (and is) a communications hub for the west coast naval fleet.

THANK YOU! Another great story to watch. Can't wait for part two. Just think of how GREAT Canada would be today if they kept the AVRO Arrow. Industry would be so advanced today, jobs and so much more.
The Yanks never did respect us, but they sure as hell FEARED what the AVRO Arrow could do for Canada. Which would have made them a lot less than 2nd rate to Canada. Isn't it nice to have thoughts of how GREAT it could have been for Canadians.

They keep reminding me of how badly Dief the Chief and his party screwed up.
They keep reminding me of what we could have had -- nay, what we could still have.
A country that cannot feed itself, starves, and is not a nation. And one that cannot defend itself, may enjoy that fate also. The last several governments have done us a disservice. We should have, long ago, re-done the Arrow. And kept improving it as time went on.
We stopped because USAS and Soviet interests did not want it, and NASA wanted all those engineers and techs, and their knowledge and abilities.
    Take Care, LL:AP.

Previous to the twentieth century, American forces had attacked Canadian territories many times, sometimes involving forces which outnumbered the entire population of Canada. Amazingly, though luck and sometimes military prowess, the invaders were always turned away. A superficial analysis of the history of Europeans in North America demonstrates that the peoples originally known as les Canadiens had staved off domination and annexation by the thirteen American colonies, first with the assistant and deterrent influence of Imperial France, and later that of the British Empire.
It should come as no surprise, then, that previous to WW II Canada’s primary war plan called for defence against US invasion. This was backed up by vigilance against US domination of Canadian foreign and economic policy. This stance on the part of the Canadians ‘’establishment’’ reflected the economic interests of those with power. These policies cannot be considered an extreme response because America’s war plans up to 1931, were primarily concerned with displacing the United Kingdom as the most powerful global actor, and envisioned invading Canada with four armies and removing it from the British Empire. Concurrently depriving Britain of control of Canada’s strategic resources and gaining these enormous assets for themselves was the “win-win” situation envisioned. ((Granatstein: paper on US influence on the Canadian military))
The tactic of playing one side against the other, while selling to both arms, is also described In China the munitions companies reported that there was a certain amount of feeling between the Central [Nanking] Government and the Canton Government. The Boeing agent was able to sell 10 planes to the Canton Government. Referring to the Nanking (recognized) Government, he wrote: “Their anger at us in selling airplanes to the Cantonese is more than offset by the fact that the Cantonese have gotten ahead of them and will have better equipment than they will have. In other words, the Canton sale is quite a stimulant to the sale up here [in Nanking].” Boeing replied to their agent; “it is to our advantage to successfully conclude the business if for no other reason but for the effect it would have on the Nanking Government.” (Nye Committee Report, section V para. 16-17)
Perhaps the worst of all, certain munitions and chemical companies had assisted future belligerents arm themselves to fight their home countries --- and had profited from both sides in the process. John Foster Dulles was directly involved in Du Pont’s questionable dealings in the 1920’s --- deals that were “winked at” by the State Department. (Mosley, Leonard: Dulles, p. 92) Allen Welsh Dulles was a member of the US delegation in 1925 and his papers always pleaded for a relaxation of the arms limitation elements of the Treaty of Versailles (Mosley Leonard: A Biography of Eleanor, Allen, and John Foster Dulles and Their Family Network New York: The Dial Press, 1978 p.p. 71-72)
The Du Pont representatives ... later remark of the final draft of the convention regarding the arms traffic signed at Geneva: “There will be some few inconveniences to the manufacture of munitions in their export trade, but in the main they will not be hampered materially.” Electric Boat Co. patents were used in German submarines, Several US aviation companies had helped arm Japan for their conquest of Manchuria, and the Focke Wulf FW-190 fighters used American Pratt & Whitney engines built by BMW under licence.

@@jim100ab9 Good stuff. In the scene with the joints chiefs I make it clear that the U.S. has a contingency plan for any attack from anywhere. That is just good planning on their part. Russia, England, France, etc. probably do also. For the military, It comes down to the "could they" and not the "would they" and without question an Arrow Mark 3 could have hit Washington with Iron Bombs.

I think that most Canadians know of the attacks on Canada back in 1812. However, to think that the USA our greatest ally would have been planning to attack us with four armies for our resources right up to 1931 is hard for me to take. I guess that they found that buying up as much of our companies and resources as they could, while killing companies that they couldn’t buy “AVRO” was easier. The real problem is the USA is still trying to interfere and control Canada (as well as other countries) to this very day. I said it before so I’ll say it again!
Dam the torpedoes, politicians and our neighbours to the south, let’s roll up our sleeves and get on with defending ourselves again!

I needed an adversary that was very formidable and there they were. The other thing they provide is the Admiral Kuznetsov. Unlike American Carriers the Admiral Kuznetsov can defend itself. The more I learned about that design to be quite honest, the more I liked it.
