Yep. Never knew the Mythbusters pair were in on the battlebots/robotwars thing. I would have liked to have seen this against Hypnodisc and Razor. It looks like it wasnt very manouvreable or agile, just a sphere of destruction, like an asteroid.
Yes, but what they wanted to build simply isn't possible at the scale they're working with. 30,000 rpm was never realistic. Having worked with both makers and engineers before, my interpretation of that part of his story was more that Jamie wanted it to spin as fast as possible and threw 30,000 rpm out there as a ridiculous number when his team pressed for a number, as they'd need to know when spec'ing parts/etc, and then they found that 30,000 rpm humorous enough to look into what the effects actually would be.
Maybe it's due to the competition being on it's very beginnings, though I'm totally speaking out of my a--, but I feel like later on in battlebots the competition was not only made safer because of lessons learned (someone should have realized that they might need a roof and stuff) but there was more of a higher focus on growing with the show side of it.
Blendo is like an old school Doctor Who villain that the BBC made out of stuff lying around but then decided to make them super powerful. The thing is a real life Dalek!
Blendo is a terrifying beast, seeing it instakill Punjar and then just stand there, menacingly, revving up back to killing speed, man, must've been amazing to see it live
Cracked open one corner of Punjar's frame and jammed up the drive system. Might have also blown the motor control electronics too. Punjar did not come back in the loser's bracket or melees, they had to completely rebuild the frame after this hit.
According to Adam, in two of its four bouts, Blendo sent pieces of its opponents over the screen and into the audience. At which point it was given a special first place kind of award and sent home.
Punjan runs in like "Allah hu akbar" Blendo immediately totals it. I wanna meet Jamie. He has a strange sadistic side that I can relate with when making things in my machine shop.
would be interesting to see a counter to Blendo, but damn, who's gonna go through the trouble of building a contraption that can deliver a 5 ton of concentrated punch just to get through the dome Lol
@@shadowthehedgehog4737 sure, you dont think people have tried that? There have been 3 robots built specifically just to counter blendo, but blendo is so low to the ground that its almost impossible to get a thick enough piece of metal to slide under it. All 3 were murdered.
In 1995 i was 15 and went into work with my dad one day because he told me about this crazy robot they were building. at lunch they spun it up in an empty bay next to the main stage and hit a couple apple boxes. they each turned into a cloud of sawdust with one hit. it was the craziest thing i had ever seen. T
For US viewers enjoying Blendo videos, go watch some Hypno-Disc videos from the UK Robot Wars for some real destruction. Similar principle, but that thing literally ripped its opponents apart and basically destroyed a chainsaw/flamethrower wielding house robot. Always fun to see Hypno-Disc tearing the armoured shell off of other bots.
imagine someone came too close to that spinning shit, these rods were nearly invisible.. will end up like a minced dog food really not fair, to just concentrate kinetic energy and call it a 'robot' , without doing anything interesting and sophisticated.. its even dangerous if something flew away
It's about as sophisticated as you can get. From an engineering perspective, it's an outrageously elegant and efficient murder robot. What you mean is flashy, bombastic. You want entertainment and pizazz, not a well thought out mechanical feat.
I just watched an Adam Savage video. They were unofficially disqualified because, as much as Blendo passed every qualification needed, they never expected something that powerful to actually launch bits over their protective countermeasures (and it did, twice). They did take home A first prize, but are not awarded the rank of master.
anyone else come here from the adam savage video today? lol
Yup! I'd heard rumors of this monster before, had to see it in action.
Yep, man, testing that thing had to be absolutely terrifying. Lol
Yep, I've known about this and seen all 4 battles before. I figured after seeing Adam's tested video it was time to go down _"memory lane"_ again.
Yep. Never knew the Mythbusters pair were in on the battlebots/robotwars thing. I would have liked to have seen this against Hypnodisc and Razor. It looks like it wasnt very manouvreable or agile, just a sphere of destruction, like an asteroid.
Straight here😂
Dude watching it slowly spin up to speed after the hit is like movie villain levels of terrifying
Right! Exactly, it's fantastically villainous!
All that energy went right into punjar
movie villains aren’t at all terrifying
What's shocking is according to Adam Savage's latest video, this is a significantly depowered version of what they wanted to build.
"At that RPM the steel would ignite on contact with the air"
"Hmmm. Okay, maybe we don't do that then."

Haha I'm coming here from that video too
Tag you're it! See you in the next comment section on the next video. It's like Adam sent us on a treasure hunt for all the old videos LOL
@@DACFalloutRanger Me too. I am sure ALL of these old Blendo camcorder videos will get flooded with views right about now.
Damn, one hit. Good sportsmanship for not going in and wreaking the disabled bot.

Honestly way more intimidating just standing there at full throttle. It was like a Kurosawa duel, over in one strike.
@@KSignalEingangOr the fight between Obi-Wan and Maul in Rebels.
To think that Jamie Hyneman was the one who pioneered the entire idea of the "Whole Robot is a Spinning Weapon".
Diabolical, that walrus.
Another Video ADam was taking about this robot I never saw it before, So I went looking, this is the first quick KO I have seen so far :)
Blendo is like an old school Doctor Who villain that the BBC made out of stuff lying around but then decided to make them super powerful. The thing is a real life Dalek!
So funny because I was just thinking namreko 2000 kind of looked like a dalek
If something is worth doing; it is worth overdoing... Blendo - "Hold my beer!"
Blendo is a terrifying beast, seeing it instakill Punjar and then just stand there, menacingly, revving up back to killing speed, man, must've been amazing to see it live
Until Adam Savage's latest video, I've never heard of this. Glad to have found this. I hope one day Blendo will return.
We want Blendo2, updated to BLDC and LiPo, as Adam explains want to see the air ignite at 20kRPM. 😱
Long live Blendo!
I’m so glad these videos exist!
One hit, and it was critical damage

Cant believe this is slower than what jamie wanted by a factor of 100
The mind of Jaime Hyneman .... its terrifying
Damn, Punjar went all "Leeeeeroy JENKINS!".
Blendo is deliciously evil haha ! xD I love it, well done Jamie!
If only Jamie had gotten blendo up to his dream of 30.000 RPM. The outer shell would be spinning at 3200 mph.
Dear lord, just plexi on the side? No way any of today's robots could compete here without killing a few audience members.
Yeah, arena safety has come a long way since then.
According to Adam, in two of its four bouts, Blendo sent pieces of its opponents over the screen and into the audience. At which point it was given a special first place kind of award and sent home.
To be fair, most bots at this time were basically just wedges that would push each other around.
He's just spinning there! MENACINGLY!
What's hilarious is that Blendo is just a wok on a motor. Sometimes simple is best!
This is crazy... 1997, one hit wonder
Punjar isn't actually a jar and I didn't see any puns released. Maybe Blendo is the real punjar because he spun
I think this predates the evil goatee! :) (Blendo not Hyneman)

Talk about running into a haymaker...
I didn't hear no bell...
Blendo, the 400 RPM 3 foot wide spinning blade and dome of death.
Blendo: "Im gonna do what we call a pro gamer move"
And on this day spin to win was born.

No need for that, just add a pneumatic spatula to flip it over.
