Bro I literally won a game against a sweaty arcades deck using nothing but a plat angel, a few counterspells, a thassa, and an archeomancer. The dude had me at -3000 life and had a massive imposing board and I literally just sat there countering all of his removal for my plat angel. Waited until his value engine put him at like 20 or so cards in his deck then just cast blue suns zenith targeting him. I wouldn’t have come even close to winning that game without the plat angel in the deck

Platinum angel is good when you keep it in its weight class. A Cedh table might laugh it away, but a casual table in its late game will sweat bullets.

I slightly disagree with the Sheoldred bit, but for an entirely separate reason. I play the gitrog monster, and I don’t run too many enormous threats other than Gitrog himself, so when making the deck I thought man what can I use as a lightning rod for removal so people don’t just kill Gitrog as often, and my solution was the Praetors. Vorinclex(the good old one) and Sheoldred are amazing lightning rods, especially Sheoldred. If they get rid of Sheoldred instead of Gitrog, I’m playing land tribal, mana should never be an issue, so nothing was lost. If they kill Gitrog, Sheoldred gets him back and they lose something of theirs. If you play it correctly, any card can be great.

  • @w4tch0ut10

    Fully agree!
But really, the vast majority of creatures are just borderline unplayable in EDH. If it's not cheap (talking mana cost, ofc), a dork, doesn't have a good etb effect, haste or otherwise strong immediate impact (like Phyrexian Dreadnought in Selvala for example) - then it is guaranteed to make your deck objectively WORSE.

@@w4tch0ut10 you're toxic and I hope you don't ever play in casual pods. I fail to see how a 7 mana 7/7 with swampwalk, every turn straight to battlefield reanimation, and every turn 1 sided sack creature removal is bad. I play sheoldred in nearly all of my black in them decks and every time I see it in a game either mine or others it is either a must counter or the biggest threat on board and a must kill. PA is not powerful, efficient, or fast. It requires build arounds, and a setup to do anything. It has no protection or redundancy. It costs 7 mana. It's also an artifact, meaning it can be targetted by more than just creature hate.
There are a myriad of cards viable in EDH that outclass PA in every way.

PA is a powerful card, just not necessarily a staple.
If you’re playing against a solitaire “I win” combo/aggro deck, they can’t do much about it, and are basically forced to conceed.
There are ways to recur it, protect it, flash it in. It’s vastly underated when you play it in a deck that likes to pay life to kill your opponent, or with other “you lose” cards that simply get ignored.
The problem you have with PA is it is not inheritantly an offensive card. It’s not a Craterhoof. Defensive cards always get a bad rap, but consider Craterhoof does nothing against an opponent with a PA on the field.

Sheoldred being a target for removal will never make it bad, and "not making in impact" is entirely wrong. People just dont build their decks right. Obviously, it's not an auto-include for black decks, but k'rrk and the like who can cheat it out as early as turn 4 or 5 will dominate games with a card like this, and swampwalk is just an added benefit to all the urborg players.

Just played a 5 player game where Sheoldred just warped the whole game around herself. One player liked her a lot so he destroyed her with some spell making a copy of her. I couldn't play my hand of 4-6 mana creatures, since they would just die when my turn rolled around, effectively locking me out of most the game. At some point someone got rid of the Sheoldred copy, but the original got reanimated from the grave. I did win in the end, but that's just cuz someone eventually wiped the whole board and at that point everyone had been using all their resources, due to *_Sheoldred_* .
I think the Nerds failed to realize how powerful casting an Edict at every opponent's upkeep is. In a 5-player game that is essentially a free 8 mana worth of value right there. Add to that free Zombify and that's a whopping 12 mana worth of free spellage every turn cycle!! Not to mention she can unblockable-surprise-kill an opponent with swamp, or anyone if you have Urborg. Easily worth the 7 mana and risk of being removed IMHO.
She might not be the best Praetor, but she's definitely not the _worst_ (that title goes to Urabrask). She does *work* .
